Q: I am a celiac. I am allergic to wheat and cannot eat oats or barley and that they say is why I have severe osteoporosis. I know how to use the right flours to make up for your reg flour and I love carrot cake. I am 5′5″ and weigh 104 lbs and trying to gain about 20 lbs and find it impossible. Any suggestions?
Ruth
A: Thanks for taking the time to share your story with me. Indeed, celiac is a bit challenging, but you seem to have found the answers to manage it. If you want to discover the truth about osteoporosis and how to have strong and healthy bones without taking dangerous drugs and (this is very important in your case) without relying on extra supplements, I strongly recommend that you read The Bone Health Revolution.
In it, I tackle bone loss from its root cause: excess calcium leakage to correct a biochemical imbalance that’s related to the pH in our tissues. And it can all be managed by properly combining foods. You’ll be glad to know that wheat and oats are not good for our bone health because they create an acid residue. In The Bone Health Action Plan no foods are forbidden, however, and there are many choices available to suit everyone’s needs and palate as well.
In reference to your weight gain, I think that as long as you feel good and healthy, you’re on the right track. It’s hard to gage weight and height because there are so many variations in frame and other things. For example, I’m 5′8″ and weigh a little over 130 lbs., without considering myself too skinny… You might want to concentrate on eating calorie dense foods for a while and see what happens.
Take care and keep in touch,
Vivian

Hi
I am Coeliac too! I was diagnosed 25 years agon! My Osteoporosis was I believe, a direct link with mal-absorption of Calcium along with working too hard for too long, no holidays and no sunshine and bad/irregular eating habits. The funny thing was that we owned at the time a superb restaurant with great food, which was highly acclaimed. However, the last thing we got to do was eat regularly and rest!
We sold the restaurant and then I discovered that I had a 20% loss in my lumbar spine and osteopenia in my right hip. I had the necessary MRI scans (upright MRI) etc and my specialist prescribed bisphosphonates - which I refused to take. (This was 5 months ago)I have changed my diet and re-introduced weight bearing exercise (I used to be a PE teacher in my youth) and found some gold standard, wonderful supplements. These include Calcium and Vit D, along with other essential vits and Omega 3. I now feel great, my back does not ache nearly as much and I have hope. I am a young 60 yr old and I don’t want to give up yet. I have too much to do and a living to earn. We won’t be able to retire yet so I need to be fit. Keep eating GF food, take some well respected supplements (I could recommend), exercise in the right way, reduce alcohol and get some sunshine. Enjoy life! It is there for the taking:)
Jenny, your positive attitude is contagious…Keep it up!
Best,
Vivian
