I’m 6 wk. post op from a maximum reduction for ovarian cancer. Stage 3C. I seldom ever had back aches but now by end of day , am very uncomfortable. Since this may be due to midline abdominal healing, I may have little or no abdominal musculature thereby forcing my back muscles to work overtime. Is there anything I can do to slowly build back musculature without harming newly healed abdomen? I do wear abd. binder alternately during day. Not sure if I’m making my situation worse. Thanks

Confused
I am a 52 year old female and just found out I have Osteoporosis in my hips. The DR. first put me on Actonel which I never got because of Insurance rates so I got the generic Fosomax. I took on Sat. Morning and immediately my back begin to ache. By Sunday morning every bone and muscle in my body hurt. So I thought maybe I over did it. The next week-end the very same thing happened. I have put a call in to the Dr. as I am scared to take it this week-end and go through all that pain again.
I’m scared to take the drugs and scared not to.Shelia / KY.

I was diagnosed with osteopenia at 52 and started taking Actonel. I quit after 6 mos when each morning I felt like I was having an heart attack. I purchased your book and honestly started following it and then quit. My last couple of bone density tests reported me having osteoporosis. In 4 mos. I will be 60 and I am wondering if it is too late to begin following your plan. I will have a bone density test at the end of the month, but I do not expect it to turn out well

Hi! Vivian,
I Don’t Have A Problem Yet With Osteoporosis. But I Do Want To Prevent It From Happening. And I Like The Idea Of You Program. Right Now I Have Heavy Debts To Pay Off, So I Can’t Really Start Your Program Yet, But Once I Pay Them Off, I Certainly Will Give It A Try.
Thank You VERY MUCH For ALL YOU DO.
ALL THE BEST TO YOU, MS. L. -
Success
I am 61. About 2 1/2 years ago I stopped Fosamax due to heart palpitations. Thankfully, I came across Vivian and ordered “The Bone Health Revolution”. I decided to take strontium citrate and a calcium supplement called Cal Apatite Forte. Strontium at night and calcium in the morning. In one year my bone density results went from -3.1 in the spine to -1.9 and -1.9 in the hip to -1.4. I am in awe of this. Thanks, Vivian……..

I went for my bone density test in July 2009. Learned that I have osteopenia, and lost 1/2″ from my small frame of 5’1″. Doctor suggested to repeat test in one year. On my April 2010 complete physical, I measured only 5′ 1/4″. I do eat healthy, excercise daily and still lost some hight. Meaning that my bone density is not improving. Any suggestions what more can I do to reverse this scary situation ? Many thanks. I.U.

Balance
I am now 62 and I was diagnosed with osteoporosis about 5 years ago. The doctor immediately gave me a prescription not without telling me first how dangerous this illness was. But I don’t like to take any drugs unless I get very sick and there is no natural remedy for it. So, I have been searching on the internet and looking for information ever since and this is what I have learned:
* How dangerous the drugs for this “illness” can be
*The benefits of strength training for the bones [should be done every other day]
* How our body used a lot of calcium to digest some food
* Some food rich in calcium is also rich in oxalate and how this can affect the calcium absorption
*You need to exercise in order to keep your bones healthy. “If you don’t use it you lose it”
**And the latest good news is that loosing bone density is normal, NOT AN ILLNESS.
**You can help your bones to recover bone density with strength training [ask the astronauts]
I heard that the calcium supplement is NOT recommended [get it from food]. Instead the Vitamin D is essential for your bones .
Everything is changing. Do your own research, there is so much information on the nternet . Don’t do anything before checking the benefits and side effects. Read, read, read………

Thank God! I’m healthy!
I had a fall a year and a half ago and broke my hip. It was a 5 break break and the surgeon said there was some Osteoperosis. I said No and he just shook his head and said the operation was good and walked out of the room.Well I was put on a bone strengthener about three weeks later and it said it could cause side effects. Well it did and so I went to a doctor and told him I needed it changed to another and he put me on another and the same thing happened. So I said Forget it and came off of them all together. The first one was Fosamax and the second was Actonel. I now am just taking a liquid supplennent comb of Calc.,mag, and Vit D.,Ocu-Force for my eyes and a Stem Cell product called Stem Enhance,As I am a distributor with them. I feel great and walk around all over and also ride a stationary bike. Oh yes I just turned 80 years young on April 5. I am very healthy and do not Take any prescription drugs. Praise God for keeping me healthy! Amen!

no prescriptions for us
My 86 year old mother was told she had osteoporosis because her bones were so porous. She was very concerned and brought a number of choices to me for help to decide what to take. We found your site while doing our research. We have confidence now that we do not have to take prescription drugs to help strengthen her bones. We are making better choices about diet and exercise and more informed decisions about what will help and what will not. Thank you Sharon

I am 72 and in excellent health. I have one

29yrs old
Hi,
i’m 29yo and have recently been told I have osteoporosis!!! You can imagine my shock and disbelief. I went to my doctor complaining of back pain (which I have suffered from for many years) I had not had an ex-ray on my back for about 5yrs (since I suffered a buldging disk in my lower back), so he ordered them. The results came back indicating a requirement to get a dexa scan based on the results of the x-ray, which suggested signs of osteopenia. My dr. took some blood tests at this thime also. The results suggested my oestrogen levels were low and he suggested I could be going through early menopause! Another shock. He also advised me that my vit D levels were slightly low but because I live in Victoria, Australia this is quite normal due to the limited periods of good sun weather and not to worry about it. He also advised me that my calcium levels were normal. He then referred me to an endocronologist. He was not able to give me answers and advised me to wait to see the specialist. So I decided to freak out a little thinking I was going to be a childless woman with a hunchback and the fragility of my grandmother!! I also did some research on the internet and also received some information from the Osteoporosis foundation here in Australia, in the meantime. I decided to go back to my doctor with some more questions whilst I waited for my specialist appointment. My dr had however, left the service since I saw him last and I had to see another one. I questioned her about my situation. She also advised me that they were unsure and I would have to wait until I saw the specialist. She also suggested I take vit D because my levels were very low and she was surprised the other dr had told me not to worry. So to add to my confused state from doing my own research, the dr’s who were giving me conflicting information!!!! I finally got to see the specialist who firstly advised me that taking birth control would amount to my low oestrogen levels and that was not an issue. She ordered more blood tests and thats about it. I asked questions but I got more of… wait until the results come back. So I’m off to see her again in 2wks and who knows what will happen, maybe more tests?? I had resigned myself to not worrying about it anymore. All of the confusing information and the dr’s who seem to know nothing. However I have since done some more research and have come across your web site and information.Firstly I really like your information it makes sense to me and I like your natural approach. I was reluctant to even think about taking medication for this condition and now I am convinced I WILL NOT! I see a natropath who has guided me toward most of your suggestions. I am a very healthy eater already I have been a vegetarian for 15yrs and am currently looking at the idea of becoming Vegan due to my research about dairy products. I look forward to reading your book also to gain more information. I hope too that my next dexa scan will show my improvement without taking drugs. Thanks

I was diagnosed with osetoporsis at age 53. Took foxamax for a year. I did research on it and decided the side affects weren’t worth it. Six years ago my doctor talked me into boniva. I had severe heartburn and right after boniva injections came out I took the injections for 21/2 years and ended up having 2 root canals and had to have one of them redone within six months. Was going to have the tooth pulled until the oral surgeon refused because of the boniva. Not on any osteo drugs right now even though my doctor wants me back on boniva. Had an EGD in Jan and was diagnosed with an esophogeal ulcer (which has since healed) plus Barret’s Esophagus. I take many supplements but now my question is how do I get my minerals to absorbed while taking Prilosec? Because of the high incidence of esophogeal cancer from the Barrett’s I’m afraid to stop the Prilosec. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Fosomax-Free!
Hi Vivian,
Here’s my story!
I had been taking Fosomax for about two years (I’m 73)and before that Didrical but I wasn’t a very faithful pill-taker. In fact I sometimes stopped for weeks and sometimes forget…on purpose! Anyway this past June I just stopped the sporadic taking of Fosomax and didn’t tell my doctor until last week. So actually I’ve been fosomax free for over a year. Therefore I thought I should have a bone density test to see how badly my bones had deteoriated. Then I went to confess to my doctor since he now had the results of my test. I was prepared for the worst news as I waited for him to scan the results and finally he said, “your hips are great; if fact they are better than they were in 2008″ which was when I had the last test. Yeh!! However, my little wrists have osteopenia. Then I told him that I had stopped the medication and he asked me why. I mentioned that my dentist had asked me about it and told me about possible side-effects. I try to eat well and go to dance class twice a week plus bowling…I’m a terrible bowler…but sometimes I surprise everyone and get a strike!! I feel great not having to take the pill and hope I’m not making a mistake. I guess i’ll have to exercise my wrists. So,I’m glad I found your site Vivian, as reading everyone’s stories makes me feel like I’m possibly doing the right thing. Thank you.Mildred

As I have refused to take Fosamax my Dr. has now prescribed a nasal spray called miacalcin. The only info I can find is a 10 page document presented by the manufacturer that one would need a degree to understand. Does anyone have any information on miacalcin?

I have osteopenia and not on any of the drugs. I had one spinal fracture but has been a year and no more. To the person that said they could not eat greens because of missing teeth, you can put them in a blender and drink them. A good drink is spinach, kale (or any greens), pineapple(canned or fresh), apple juice and strawberries and blend until smooth. It makes a good tasting drink and is so good for you. A great way to get greens. I grow mine in my yard around my shrubs or out in the middle of the yard. Kale is very good and easy to grow.

Had my parathyroids and thyroid removed in ’95. I take Rx Calcitriol to replace parathryoids and Armour for thyroid. My naturopath doc says I’m not making Calcitonin, the hormone made by the thyroid to absorb calcium. He suggested Miacalcin nasal spray. Just started that, and I’m hoping it will reverse my osteoporosis. I’ve been on a vegetarian (except wild salmon) diet for 6 years, with emphasis on alkaline foods–still getting thinner bones. I walk, do wii fitness, age 58, raising grandchild, age 8. Really need to be “there” for her and my husband. Would love to know if anyone with the para-and thyroid glands gone have been helped by Vivian’s program.

My oncologist wanted me to take Fosamax but I declined. My son is a dentist and he will be extracting my tooth and I hear you can get an infection if you are on bone meds. My oncologisst also say I have Pagets Disease and have to have IV for three days every three months. I know it is something with the bones but I don’t know what. Help me if you know. Thanks. Nancy

I also subscribe to “Vibrant Nation”online. In a discussion about bone loss, someone mentioned Osteovalin. It is a supplement with strontium. Does anyone take it and what is the verdict? I will not take drugs for this condition. Already take 2000IUs of Vit D plus calcium, magnesium. Was on hormones for 15 years. Now am off and have hot flashes. I am 69 years old and work out every day.

Fosomax breaking bone
I had a problem with walking and my hip and back hurting in 2007. I went to a back specialist and he sent me to therapy. With an MRI, I was told I had herniated disc. I was sent to therapy and finally got to the point I could not walk without the help of a walker. I had the injections in my back three times, and nothing helped. On Dec. 14, 2007, my leg became swollen and I called the doctor who recommended a daupler, which revealed a blood clot in the upper thigh. I was put in the hospital and when my internist saw my problem walking, he ask what was wrong and I told him my back was bad and the treatment I had received. He told me I would go for another MRI because it was not my back, but my leg or hip. The MRI revealed a fracture in the top of the femur bone at the hip area. I have taken Fosomax for the past 12 years, thinking this would help me protect my bones. I was told I had osteopenia. This was the treatment for that. After the surgery on my hip and a rod was placed from my upper femur down to my knee, I was sent to an endroconologist. He recommended I continue the fosomax, along with vitamin D 1200mg. This is what I have been doing, but have been told my other hip has lack of blood flow and is weak also.
I just wanted to report my story to you. Thank you for bringing this to the publics attention.

Dear Vivian,
I recently read the book, “Dangerous Grains” by James Braly, M.D., and Ron Hoggan, M.A.: Discover the benefits of a gluten-free diet in relieving and preventing the ailments associated with celiac disease, gluten sesitivity, and more than 200 chronic illnesses and conditions…… Osteoporosis was included. I had already been trying to eliminate wheat from my diet since I know that wheat is a highly allergic food and found when I could actually stay off of wheat, which isn’t easy, my joints knew no pain. Not until I read this book did I have any reason to believe my development of Osteoporosis could have come from the wheat gluten. Do you or anyone else have any other information on this? According to this book, “If you have weak, porous bones, you might want to eliminate gluten from your diet even if you do not mount an immune response to this food. A significant portion of our society is plagued by this silent disability.” I thought perhaps you might do some more research on this subject for your Save Our Bones community. Thanks so much for your reports. They are so very helpful. Carole

goodbye drugs
I have been noticing on TV messages that say if you have been taking this paricular drug and have had a bad reaction or so, Call a number and join in suing. Of course this is a money making action as well.:) Reminds me of the car companies when they got careless and considered money over safety to be in their best interest as well.

53 and fighting back
I had my thyroid removed at 24. When I hit menopause, I began to age rapidly. I tried to get help, but my doctors seemed to me to be moving very slowly. Finally I was put on a much lower dose of thyroxine and stabilized, but I still didn’t feel right. I was overweight, bloated, exhausted. I’ve been taking the multivitamins and calcium since 45–suddenly at that age my doctor scared me into taking them. It was my sister that told me about DIM. I started taking it and within a month lost 10 pounds. I guess I was estrogen dominate, because now I feel great. My doctors never mentioned estrogen dominance, or three different estrogens that are out of balance with each other.

I have recently put on Arimidex (1 month) plus calcium and vit D3. I had a Boniva injection one month ago (take one every three months). I had a call from my doctor advising I had a very low Vitamin D. She has given me one pill to take twice a month for three months. I can’t get answer as to why my Vitamin D level is so low. Any advice?

Taking Calcium citrate (Bone-up formula by Jarrow
Been taking Bone-up and about 2000I.U. vit D3 and I try to avoid animal fat but do have a little. I avoid refined carbs, and take fish oil, and high dose multi. I don’t eat any raw greens because of missing top teeth and no dental care for a long time, and have Medicaid which in Calif. does not cover dental. Idon’t drink conventional soda pop, but do drink natural sugarfree organic juices. I got a low Vit D result on my labs. Can’t understand why. Can you guess why.???? Be nice to see your answers to everyone’s questions in these story pieces, please. Thanks. Glad to find you. Haven’t seen your diet yet. Estelle

Mrs. Sylvia
For a wonderful coincidence, I opened your web page and found the information about Osteoporosis and Osteopenia. I’d also like to thank you so much for the Guide you kindly sent me. I’ve been diagnosed with Osteopenia 6 years ago, it came through steroids I took for 2 years. It all started with a car accident when almost all my bones were broken, then at the hospital I got Pericarditis, and Cortizon was the only drug that helped. I was then prescribed with Actonel. Now, after reading all about this drug, I’m scary and would like to know whether I should stop taking it from one week to the other, or should I do it slowly. I started being more careful with the food and also taking supplements. I haven’t started with the exercises you suggest, my knees and my hips hurt every now and then, do you think I should anyway make those exercises?
I’m 66 and have always been very healthy and energetic.
Thank you very much for your interest.

I am a 68 yr old female and have been in excellent health. I eat organically, supplement with the BEST vitimins/minerals, fish oil, etc. Drink spring water since finding out RO water is depleted of necessary minerals. I have always excercised, power walked, did strength training at the GYM. A little over 2 yrs. ago I injured my back by lifting a large potted plant. A bone density showed I have osteoperosis!! The latest MRI shows I now have 5 lower vertebra with stress fractures! I am now in a back brace and am in constant pain! I take Aleve to take the edge off! How can your program help me????? I need a simple protocal to follow ie: supplements to fit my particular health problem.
Thank you for any info you can offer me.

IONIC FIZZ – it works!
They told me many years ago i would probably get, and i did. I took Fosamax for about ten years, and it was still getting worse. I was past the -3 mark and the doctor wanted me to start ‘forteo, but i thought i couldn’t afford it, so i went on taking the generic alendronate.I wanted to stop takng it, so when i heard about your book i ordered it. About this time an acquaintance told my daughter she had the problenm and was in a lot of pain. I dediced to follow jp on this and sent for some through the internet. After a couple weeks my pain was pretty well gone and i was feeling better. It is a powdered calcium ionised to facilitate absorsption. It’s called Ionic Fizz from Pure Labs. I had my annual check up in Jan.and dthe doctor said he had never heard of osteoporosis figures turning around like that. I also chaanged some eating habits, exercises, etc. but the Fizz was the real help.

To “Trying To Do The Right Thing”:
I am a Type II Diabetic. Please be careful
doing the high protein diet as it can affect
your kidneys adversely. Trust me, I know from experience. Believe me, you don’t want to end up on kidney dialysis. You need a high fat,
not a high protein diet. Daily Protein for women is 46 grams. I think for men, it is 60g – 65g. Carbs should be very low carb. (Greens First by Doctors Nutrition recommended. Fresh greens good also, but watch the Oxylic Acid in them. (Vitamix 5200 is my favorite kitchen appliance.) You can get Eczema and Psoriasis from too much Oxylic Acid. I’ve experienced that too, hence the switch to Greens First which doesn’t do that to me.) Of course, all the Osteoporosis recommended supplements are good too. Some suggestions for high fat (important to properly balance Omega-3 vs Omega-6):
Anutra Ground Chia Seeds (or whole seeds)
Avocado
Walnuts
Fish Oil (Carlson’s)
Krill Oil
V-Pure Capsules (Vegan DHA & EPA)Hope the above helps.

Can you send me any information on Strontium which I have been taking for the past two years without any side effects, but I don’t seem to be improving either! I am a vegetarian so live on fruit and veg plus cerials and live in Spain where bone density is not available. Reading the comments, I wonder if it makes any difference! I walk for an hour every day and at least I am not getting any worse, and although prescribed large doses of Paracetamol, I never take it!
Thanks for your encouragement and help, Irene -

Hi Vivian, becauseI have just recovered from a
compresson fracture of the spine which occured back the first of October I am wondering if the heel jump exercise would be wise for me. I just got back to the gym this past week and have been back using some weight machines. I have used trainers in the past that know about my osteoporosis. Also because I am a celiac which means I have a gluten problem I drink a gluten free beer which has neither wheat or barley. It is made with fermented sorghum, hops and yeast. How acidic is that? Because I am on a gluten free diet I do eat alot of fresh organic vegetables and fruit. Am really working on a alkaline-acidic balance. -
Vegies
An Italian girl I knew many years ago, told me about a recipe using tomatoes. it was simply a mixture of sliced onions, tomatoes and capsicum, about equal quantities, mixed with a little good olive oil, pinch of salt of course (I prefer potssium chloride salt, instead of the soldium) and the while lot simmered gently in a large pan. It was so delicious and easy, I gave it to my clan every Saturday lunchtime when all were at home. Naturally, we used tommies throughout the week as well. I have to say, all 5 of my offspring, now in middle age, keep well, and tend to follow in mother’s footsteps to some degree at least! They were well instructed in the virtues of vegetables from a very young age! I thank you Vivian for all your advice which I read and absorb thoroughly!

thanks Vivian for all your great advice. I’d like to share a funny story with you!. When my boys were little, about 4 and 5 years old, one night I awoke to hear talking in the middle of the night. Seems they were definitely listening to me at mealtimes!

Heal Lift Exercise
This video needs to include exactally how to warm up your legs. The 15 minutes of Yoga I was doing was not enough AND you need a cool down exercise after to keep back of legs from tightening. I learned all this the hard way. My pelvis became locked in place and when I make a normal turn to the right with my feet planted in place during normal work day, I heard and felt the tendons in my left calf rip. It took several weeks of rest and stiff legged walking to work back to normal.

Best ph level yet
I have been experimenting with my diet since I decided to get serious about my bones. Tonight when I tested my urine my ph level was just below 7.4. I was elated. My diet for the day included a large glass of pineapple juice with barley grass blended into it. Later I had cooked millet sweetened with honey, to this I added slivered almonds, raisins, a tablespoon of Udo’s oil and Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk. My mid morning coffee break consisted of fresh pineapple and half a banana. For lunch I had tomato bisque soup, celery and carrot sticks with almond butter and green tea. Later in the afternoon I had soya milk as a protein boost and a handful of almonds with a few cashews mixed in. I sipped on green tea all day as well. As I was out for the evening I did not have a big meal but enjoyed a cup of rooibos tea with milk and two large slices of toasted flax bread with strawberry jam later when I came home. I supplemented my food throughout the day with alfalfa tablets, calcium + tablets and a few ayurvedic herbs that are helpful to reduce stress.

Born into a family of small-boned, white women, I watched my mother melt away due to osteoporosis to the point that she was in a wheelchair and then bedfast before death. Not wanting that for my future, I had bone density test in 1996 with results in the “red zone” even though I appeared healthy, exercised daily with gym 3 times a week, ate properly, took calcium/magnesium/vit.D and had not lost any height from 5’2.”
First line of defense was Miacalcin that eventually irritated the nose. Next was Fosamax for over six years. Never having had a stomach problem, one developed which demanded Prilosec and Calfate. Through several years, there were the Forteo shots daily (reaction), Boniva pill (reaction), Actonet (bad stomach), Boniva infusions, and then the Big Guy: RECLAST. All these years, my bone density eased downward. Now I realize that the stomach meds were interfering with the absorption.
First RECLAST infusion was in March of 2008. The reactions were terrible: insomnia, acid stomach to point I could not lie down for two months, nausea, burning, periods of weakness. After nine months, the side effects began to subside. However, during that time, the primary doc was trying to find SOMETHING to help me sleep—nada! I was determined not to repeat the procedure.
In May of 2009, in return visit to physician, I explained my difficulties (have always had a paradoxical situation with meds). However, he said that my number had held for the first time in all those years and he didn’t think RECLAST had anything to do with the insomnia.
In a weak moment, I agreed to the second infusion. By that night, I knew is was a terrible mistake: extreme burning of skeleton from ends of toe bones to top of head, nausea, loose bowel, slower kidney function, unusual odor to feces and urine, sleep depravation, periods of weakness, cramps of legs and feet.
These continued for four months before subsiding. Since that time, there has been some crumbling of two teeth, and some major eye changes. The opthalmologist said there had been some problems with RECLAST. There will NEVER be another pill/shot/infusion for osteoporosis. I was healthy when I started—thinking I was doing the very best for myself since health, nutrition, and exercise have always been a part of my life. The only ones who have profitted from this saga are the pharmaceuticals!!! And my body is the worse for it. -
Hope you’re right!
I quit taking Fosamax about one year ago. I considered what I should do for a long time, and didn’t just jump because of the information I found on your website. However, I feel the doctors all push these drugs on us wihtout really knowing for sure they will be good for us. I talked to my doctor about quitting Fosamax, and she talked to me about taking Forteo. They don’t get it, that you don’t want to take anything at all. She had suggested I could take some physical therapy to build up my bones, and I ignored that advice for 4 years. Then I found out the Fosamax wasn’t improving my bones, and we did that test to see if the calcium was leaching into my urine, which it wasn’t, and I thought why take such toxic stuff for nothing? So I got the referral for phsycal therapy, quit Fosamax, and have not looked back. I still am concerned that I might not be doing the right thing, but I feel I have some time to work on my bones because I’m 55 this year. I try to walk the stairs at work 3 times a day usually, do my physical therapy exercises 4 days a week, walk as much as possible, and read everything I can about osteoporosis…and frankly…I worry. I’m going totally against everything my doctor has asked me to do in not taking the medication, but felt so strongly that if I don’t take control of my medical care, who will? They only want to see results on their scores, they don’t care what you go through to get there. Now I’m at the junction of whether to go in for more bone density testing or not. If I do I feel it will only scare me, but am I burying my head in the sand? I too wish there was really some more definitive answers out there other than one really great website saying there’s another way. I do love this website by the way though Vivian. Without your website, I doubt I would have questioned what I was doing, and who knows where I would be in 5 years…. Please keep us updated and all of us will work together to become more healthy.

RECLAST
After 2 years of taking Reclast, my bone problems are worse. My leg bones hurt constantly, especially my thigh bones. I love the outdoors and exercising. Reclast has put a screeching halt on this. I love cross country skiing. I went out one time this year and have been four weeks healing tendonitis and sore heal bone. I have acquired buldging and herniated disc in my back and neck.
My calcium levels keep fluctuating and my urine output is low. The doctors keep running more tests and blood work, but cannot come up with a diagnosis. My vision has also deteriorated. I no longer work due to the constant pain. I will not take Reclast this year, even though my doctor still thinks I should! LOL After all my new symptoms since starting Reclast. -

We have all seen what the Doctors will prescribe for us when suffering with osteoporosis together with all the side effects.
I have been taking supplements for over 3 years with vitamins K and D and at a recent scan may situation has got worse when infact I was expecting a percentage increase of bone density.
I read that some people have gained 6% or more in just six months…must say I find this claim rather extreme to say the least.
I would like to hear a truthful case history from someone complete with a list of natural supplements that has given you an increase of bone density over a period of time. I have a feeling that in some cases osteoporosis is hereditary and what ever one does no improvement will happen. Osteoporosis is a degenerative disease, having pharmaceuticals is not going to heal but cause other problems with time. The natural path is the only way but I may have missed a vital vitamin that is responsible for kick starting this whole process. We are UK based and may not be able to acquire the same supplements as in the USA but I am a Vivian supporter -
Forteo-no!
Forteo was prescribed for me in early 2006. I quit taking it after 21 months despite the 24 month recommendation from the manufacturer. It did seem to increase my bone density, but it definitely altered my visual and aural comprehension–something that I continue to struggle with daily. I quit at 21 months because I began having episodes of memory loss (alzhimer-like). No episodes since quitting.

which way do I go?
I get a poor bone scan every time I take one. Every time they put me on bone loss medicine it never helps after 2 years. I’m sick of taking dexa scans and getting up set. I really don’t believe them. Some times I think its all a scam. I’m very active..go to the gym..get on the treadmill, take strenghth classes 3 times a week. We also use weights in that class and do a number of different things. I also run 3 miles a day. I’m thinking about going off the bon loss medicine AGAIN. I’m taking 5thousand Vitamen D and calcuim 2400 daily. I have boosted every thing. I will get a bone scan in another 2 years and see if this works. It never feels like I have any thing wrong with me. I’m very flexible and can even still do a cart wheel. I’m almost 50. Does any one feel the same way I do..kp1960@comcast.net

Forteo is the generic Mia-calcin?
I am 72 years old I was put on Actanol to increase my bone density. I suffered severe acid reflux from it. To releive that was put on Prilosec- then Acifex for the reflux. For bone protection The Dr. put me on I believe Forto spray (nose)because of cost given the generic Mia-Calcin (not sure this is the right spelling), The sprays go up the nose and by-pass the digestive system. I have been on this for over two years . I just had a bone density test. The results showed an 8% bone loss. Learned that the medications for acid reflux stops absorbsion of nutrients, calcium etc.(which I have always taken -Dr. denied this when I brought it up) I am starting over and trying the “Save your Bones Program”. No more prescibed medication for bone building and no more medication for acid reflux.
Excercising, eating more alkaline foods etc. Looking forward to my next test results! Carolyn -

I have been on Forteo for almost a year – with NO side effects. Previously, I took Fosamax for 5 years (according to my doctor, the maximum is 7 years for Fosamax), with a continued loss of bone density; thus the change. For years I have been watching what I ate (eating healthy), exercising, and watching my weight (don’t want my thin bones to carry heavy weight) but I continued to have the loss of bone density.

forteo-oops, p.s.
in the comment I just wrote, I meant to say “the risk of osteosarcoma” is a serious concern, not “the osteosarcoma is a serious concern”
-
forteo
I have been using forteo for 16 months. I have never had any side effects, unpleasant or otherwise. When I was tested after 12 months of use, I was happy to learn I had a very significant increase in bone density. After years of high bone loss each year I was relieved to see the trend reversed. The injections are not fun, but they are easy and painless, and a small price to pay for increased bone strength. The biggest concern is the osteosarcoma which is of course very serious, and yet with more research it appears the risk is very low. I will be glad to stop the use of it next fall. I am very interested to know more about how to protect my bones without prescription meds.

Being coeliac, I am not having any difficulty with a slight change in diet, e.g. rice milk instead of cow,s milk. Fortunately my GP does not want me to have Actonel which he once prescribed for me, and my heart specialist will be told “Never Again”. At 84 I still want to stay on my feet as long as possible

House plant danger
My Environmental MD had me move out of the state of Washington’s coast as I had become EXTREMELY allergic to the state’s molds. He saif I sould move beore any possible exposure to toxic mold. I had lived there 40+ years.
He told me house plants draw mold in any state and I have not had any house plants (I’m now in AZ where our molds are dormate until our Monsoon – I’ve already had Valley Fever in my youth).
My health had improved markedly since the move here 10 years ago. What comment might safely be made on my situation?

Thank you for dispensing such worthwhile information concerning drugs and their reactions.
I took Boniva just once, and it resulted in dizziness and heart palpitations.
I am so glad to hear that these poisons do eventually leave our systems. -
NPR on osteopenia
On 12/21/09, NPR did a story on osteopenia. I found it to be very interesting, as I was told I had osteopenia, and then was put on Fosamax. I no longer take Fosamax. I have never had a broken bone in my life, and prefer to walk, do yoga and lift weights. I have not done that much in the diet department as yet.

I can agree with you very much about the treatments, that doctors prescribe . I guess that the pharma industrie is making a lot of money. I had the experience of going to the dentist and he refused to extract a root, because I told him that I had Fossamax for two weeks. Of course I stopped.
Sorry, the book is to dear for me. I would have wanted to know, what you recommend about cleaning the water.
You doing a good job of making people aware of the dangers of medication. Ta -
My son has been diagnosed with Osteoporosis
He called me right after getting the diagnosis and the Dr. gave his a script for fosamax. I told him about your book and also told him bone density wasn’t the answer as that didn’t mean the bones were stronger. He told me that the doctor said this drug wouldn’t reverse it but it would keep it from getting worse. I also explained that it would prevent new bone growth. He has psoriasis could this contribute to osteoporosis. He has trouble with his joint and just had neck surgery. I would appreciate your input. He did not fill the script but said that he would get your book. Thanx, Sue

I have osteopenia and am not on any of the drugs. Sometimes I think I should try them because it is scary not knowing what my bones are doing. The dr says it is not time to have another bone scan. I also have scoliosis and have a lot of pain. I am on Tramadol for pain and the specialist said I shold try Gabapentin for nerve pain. It is a seziure med and I have read that all of those are bad for you if you have osteoporosis. No medical dr is going to confirm that, so Vivian if you read this could you let me know if I should be aware of this medication. Also, I read a memo from Deborah about trying to gain weight. I had lost a lot of weight and my dr told me to drink 3 Ensure a day and eat 3 meals. I have done that (not sure that it is all that healthy but has a lot of vitamins) and I have gained 12 lbs. so you might want to try it. Vivian thanks for all your help. I am enjoying your book. Fran

LOIS JASON
Tried Fosomax for two years, it created gastrointestinal problems. Went on Boniva shots every 90 days; that did nothing. Tried FORTEO; my insurance wouldn’t pay and it is very costly)nurse from drug company was there to instruct me…I had horrendous negative reaction. My B.P. became elevated, was weak and experience headache, I remained in Doc’s office for hour, lying down and being monitored. Doc called FDA and reported my reaction! I have been on Strontium Citrate almost a year. We will see when next I have BDT whether that has been effective. I eat well, watch my everything and take all the necessary supplements. Any comments? Anyone

Osteoporosis Patient
I am 88. Several years ago my B12 got so low I ended up in emergency. I have been giving myself shots of B12 ever since’s under an MD’s direction.
If you mentioned the availablility of shots in your article, I missed it. I am very thankful that when our body no longer is able to get all it needs from the natural sources, we can assist with injections, at least in the case of B12.

Thank you for showing me as I am unable to obtain your literature. It is a good reminder. I was injured at work a few years ago and have slowed down in my exercise programme but these are simple enough to do in my lounge room. I have been slowly increasing my activity and hope to gradually do more. My bone density is a little low but have refused to take osteoporosis drugs. I was low in Vit D but my GP has prescribed Nat Vit D in high doses once a month, plus a good diet.

I hadn’t heard before, of the importance of an
alkaline ph in the body. Will pay attention to this.
With regular exercise and a reasonably good diet – weight 123 lbs., age 82, I have no ingtention of taking any osteoporosis medication, so, I continue to learn as much as I can about keeping well. I’m all for preventive medicine.
Thank you, Vivian for spreading the word.

I don’t take osteoporosis medication because it makes me feel sick, makes my jaw ache and I had trouble swallowing. I do take Calcium and Vitamin D and follow your program fairly well. Probably slip up sometimes but I try. Also I am doing Mike Ross’s balance exercises and they seems to be helping. Thank you Vivian.

Whatever Happened to Ole’ Joe?
I am amazed I lived so long (from Feb. 1940 to almost 2010). This included surviving high school football, 10 years of intense USN phys- ical and military training, with service on three ships. After the Navy, came thirty years of motorcycle riding. This included motorcycle /camping trips, having an average of 250 miles both to and from the California mountains with groups from 10 to 500 people. Then, after all that, I took up home additions and other con- struction projects. I fractured my L1 lower back vertebrae in 2005, helping a paraplegic friend from the car to his chair. After two months of Vicodin and bed rest, I returned to the building project of converting a 440 Sq.Ft garage into an apartment with a “studio” main room, a full tub /shower bath, and one walk-in closet. Moving on with my Health, I had taken Fosamax two years, when my first “Bone Density Scan” (BDS) in 2006 showed less than one half the normal density it should have been. After nine more months, density decreased again. I had already broken an arm in a 1994 car wreck. The docs connected that with the back fracture and diagnosed me with Osteoporosis. Based on another BDS in 2008, and since I had not made progress in two years, they prescribed Forteo, which I have injected daily for seven months. now. I have a BDS scheduled in Jan. 2010 since the December is eight months, so we will see. I actually feel better from taking the Forteo, however, I believe each word of your material, and show some of the side effects mentioned. My doctor told me that if I took the Forteo I would have to agree to stay on it for a year and a half, and I did. That means I have only ten months left after Dec. 2009, to Oct. 2010.
Bless you for the great depth of research you
you have done.I intend to discuss this with my
my Doctors and perhaps modify the (my) plan. -
Mrs Joyce Joseph
Here in the U.K.a Margaret Hill has written a book on alleviating the pain due to arthritis by means of reducing the acidity in the human body by following the right diet. She has recommended avoiding acidity enhancing foods like oranges, lemons, limes, tomatoes, etc so as to increase alkalinity in the body. Since I am on calcium channel blocking drug Felodipine 5mgm for my blood pressure control, I wonder if this is responsible for my osteoporosis? Do you know what these calcium channel blocking drugs do to the acidity or alkalinity enhancing of the human body?

Hi Vivian, I am very appreciative of your info. I have osteoporosis and osteopenia for 2 years, the result remains the same. However, I just found out I have RA.which makes things a little bit complicated. I like to exercise and eat red grapefruits. The Alkaline/Acid ratio diet I don’t know how to integrate into my daily routine, and unfortunately i can not afford to buy your book. my budget is very tight.

A pain doctor said my daily Lovenox shots initiated osteoporosis. He prescribed Actonel to
stop the osteoporosis & Folgard to stop the Actonel from making my bones brittle. I’ve given myself Lovenox shots daily since June 1998.
Last week, I stopped taking Actonel because some symptoms began to be felt. I just found out that
my testosterone was low, so, now I’m taking Testofen; it’s working,; it may stop the osteoporosis. -

Hi Vivian. I found your website in Nov 08, having returned from an ER visit where my heart rate was more erratic than usual. In my gut, I knew the Boniva I had been on for about 10 months was contributing to the issue. The doctors wanted me to up my Toprol, but I knew that was not the answer. I took myself off Boniva at that time and began research, finding your web site. I read your complimentary information, and then began to apply as much as I could to myself. I stopped the carbonated beverages, began to eat less acidic, tried more weight bearing exercises, and began to take the highest quality calcium replacement product I could buy. Fast forward a year later, today, and my new bone density scan reveals “within normal limits”!! My first bone density scan showed thinning vertebra and osteoporosis, -2 T in both femur heads. I am “over the moon” that I was able to achieve this without continued use of Boniva. My heart rate has been at baseline since two months after stopping the Boniva. I thank you for providing the excellent and easy to apply information from your web site. While some of the suggestions are not as easy as say, “popping a monthly pill”, they are far better than taking something you know is poison to your system.
With best regards!

Good nutrition and 8 hours of sleep
I bought one and it is great for making soups and all kinds of sauces and dressings that do not have any artifical adds. I use it for veggie drinks and smoothies a lot and they are helping me with Fibromyalgia. My doc wants me on Fosamax but I told him NO! I am leaving his care asap. If he can give that drug then I don’t trust him a bit. All these docs have to do is read some research on those textile chemical, fertilizer infested drugs and see how harmful they are. But follow the money trail folks. It is all about big bucks and we women are targets and always will be so EDUCATE yourselves and eat right, drink water, get 7-8 hrs of good sleep, don’t smoke or drink, walk a bit, stretch alittle and you will be fine. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. A healthy lifestyle is the best medicine for most illnesses. Well, that’s about it and God bless all!

Advice on MD’s
My answer to those who are trying to find a DOCTOR to help them is STOP! They are drug pushers. The only ones that will help may be educated Chiropractors who study nutrition but MD’s will not be the ones to go to unless they are very interested in NOT making money which drugs are their only answer. So, educate yourself. READ, READ and read some more. Buy Vivians books. Go to the nutrition stores and get the books you think you need and just stop looking to traditional drug infested medical docs for help. It’s just NOT there. My own sis is an FNP and she is now on Evista. Go figure? I haven’t talked with her for years but she is probably very crippled up by now. Hope not but she is a drug pusher. Stay away from MD’s unless you really need one. God bless!

From 2003-2007 my T-Scores kept getting worse, worse, worse, ending up in a diagnosis of osteoporosis. I tried Fosamax for 5 weeks but stopped taking it when pains in my legs led me to investigate its side-effects. I was determined then to find a natural remedy! I had already tried improving my bone density with high-calcium foods, but it hadn’t worked. One year ago, I ordered your book and posted your list of alkaline/acid producing foods in my kitchen. I realized the 80/20 diet was the plan I needed. I also found an excellent calcium blend that didn’t upset my system and that included Vit. D. I started taking a hydrochloric acid capsule with meals (when I took my calcium) to aid digestion and help absorb calcium, and I got serious about weight-bearing exercise. (One of my favorite exercises is to push a wheelbarrow around the yard with weights in it, which puts weight on my arms, back, and legs all at the same time.)
Last month I was thrilled when I got the results of my latest bone density scan. My left femur T-score was unchanged, meaning there was no further bone loss! Better yet, my spine T-score improved from -2.2 to -2.1, and my right heel improved from -2.81 to -2.49! As further confirmation, I no longer have bone pain in my legs when I make a twisting motion, and I no longer hear cracking noises in my forearm when I pick up a full gallon of milk! Thank you Vivian for your information and your encouragement to beat osteoporosis without taking bisphosphonates! -

Hi Vivian, Just had my annual DexaScan in November 3,2009….T Score was -2.4 and in 2008 it was -2.5!!!!I stopped taking Actonel in March 2009 after being on it for over 7 yrs.
My dentist just did Peridontal surgery on me & I discussed the Actonel theory, I also totally lost the hearing in my right ear after taking the monthly Actonel dosage. Dentist says only patients with other health problems, Lymphoma, on Chemo, etc.need to be concerned about the bone loss in the mouth. I took your book and asked him to take it home to read, he did and when I asked his opinion, he said “a little information can be dangerous to your health”I am 77 yrs. old, healthy, weigh 134, 5ft. 6 and show no signs of a dowadger hump. Never had to diet in my life, work out at Curves 1 to 2 times each wk.
Reading on left hip was -3.0 exactly the same as 2008 Dexa Scan.

Trying to do the right thing
After reading Vivian’s book and doing some research online, I decided to take myself off Fosamax even though I wasn’t having any adverse side effects.I didn’t like what was in it or what it did to the bone by only coating it and not strengthening it from the inside. I have to be on a high protein diet due to a tendency towards hypoglycemia. This means I can’t eat fruits (too much sugar) and I don’t like most vegetables (I know!LOL! bad girl!) I have been taking powdered fruit and veggie supplements along with horsetail (silicate),acai berry, and extra Vit.D with my Calcium for the last few months. I have also stopped drinking sodas and using artificial sweeteners. Since my last Bone density was osteoporosis/osteoporotic, I am hoping these things will all help me..I also intend to get a weight vest to wear since I am thin and have a low body mass index. If anyone has any other suggestions, I would love to hear them….keep your fingers crossed for me!

I have tried to follow the 80/20% in the alkaline/acid diet. Feel great and have lost 18 pounds. I want to respond to Vivian’s heel and toe exercise. I walk for three hours each morning. Then I do 50 minutes of exercise in the pool. One of those pool exercises is walking heel and toe for 6 laps of the pool. My physical therapist says that pool exercising gives you the most bang for the buck! You get good exercise, which is low impact.

Have lupus and been on and off prednisone for 20 years. Am 56 years old and my last DEXA scan showed my spine looked like a 72 year old’s. I was given a script for Boniva, but I guess Sally Field is one of the few who haven’t had problems with it. Reading about it online scared me right out of it. I already suffer so much from my disease, I don’t need any more problems. So I haven’t taken it. I got vivian’s reading materials and am starting supplements and TRYING to eat right and exercise, but it’s hard when you feel sick a lot. I hope this works because my doc was very snappy at me when I told him I would not take Boniva.

I’d just like to thank Vivian for both her book and these wonderfully simple pieces of information about such complex seeming issues.
She has saved me from the Phosomax nightmare (prescribed for me) and I’m delighted that bananas are so benign. I also had an instinctive back-off from the swine flu jab my government (Australian) is urging. So thank you Vivian for explaining it all. You’re an angel!

Ms.K.K.
I have been taking the Q10 for about 6 months. I quit taking the fosmax over a year ago. I knew it was not good for anyone when a cousin starting having trouble with her jaw. I have enough problems without more. Thank you so much for keeping us informed. I learn something every time I read your articles and your book. K.Kilby

Reclast
I cannot take calcium (parathyroid removal), a year ago my Doctor prescribed the Reclast injection. Now I have been diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. She (the renal doctor) thinks the Reclast may be part of the cause, I am 72 years old. I realize kidney function does deteriorate, somewhat with age, mine dropped significantly in May thru July of this year. I received the injection in Sept. of 08′. According to blood and urinalysis test I have stabilized, which is a good thing, but isn’t there any treatment or something I can or should be doing….she says no, come back in six months for more tests.

Mrs. Kim Mack
Thank You so much about your timely article that spell out the derivatives produced for Flu shots. It just confirmed my common sense as to reason why I wasn’t going to get on board with governmental and media over reaction to H1N1 pandemic. I don’t believe that one should entrust their health to the government to take care of them. Your article just confirms what I suspected.

Like Vivian, I am proactive to prevention to education with my health. I have a medical history with experience in Medical Social Work. I have learned along my journey in life the value of self education, research, advocacy and to realize that doctors early on are not trained in nutritional analysis for health. I did not have either of my young adult sons immunized for I believe that you have one body to value that the Lord entrust in your care and you really are what you eat and as we age how are body process food. For along time my bibles have been Adelle Davis who I refer to quite often. So like Vivian when I went to see my doctor he diagnosed onset ostopenia and gave me a script for Fasomax. This has started my journey of self efficacy of research, to find Vivian ‘s information on the web and pursue what I need to learn for the betterment of health. I have lots to learn, but life is about the living and learning along the way.

I was called to my health centre and asked to book for a flu vaccine by my health review nurse and promptly vaccinated only last week. If I had this information I would have insisted on refusing the flu jab!
Please could you give such information in time before they start the flu jabs here in the U.K. in September?
Thank you for your save your bones emails.

My Health
Not trying to be funny, but rather serious.
This is the first time I have heard from you in a long time. I have questions and I am not certain if I will reach the goal of bone growth after letting go of the medication. This is my fourth month. I have remained overall on my diet. with some minor deviations. I think bout my age which is 66 and the bodies declining ability to break down the foods and supplements and the five year period or six years. My mesdication is minimal only 160mg of diovan and 61mg of aspirin. I do walk regurarly but dificult to have a weight work out because my back goes out so easy. When I walk I take small bottle of water for weight bearing exercise and cardio. I did talk with Dr. Ash on 7:10 am in thse New YorK Area. He told me that I needed mor testing to see how my body is fucntioning but that Might not be possible because of my limited INcome. I do have faith IN God as a healing force in my life;
Respectfully Yours;
