How Summertime Helps Your Bones - Save Our Bones

It’s possibly one of the busiest places on earth. Picture around two million tiny pumps – hard at work all day and night – and you'll understand why. Controlled by one central thermostat and connected to millions of surface sensors, these minute marvels are your sweat glands.

They regulate your body’s temperature by excreting water through your skin to insure that it stays within a desirable range of around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. But that’s not all: sweat glands help you stay alkaline by filtering out acid and toxins circulating in your blood.

With the first day of summer only a few days away, there’s no better time to take advantage of this wonderful process to help you build your bones by increasing your alkalinity. So on those hot and steamy days, look at the bright side and remember the benefits of sweating.

Don't Be a Couch Potato

The unwanted acids and toxins carried by the blood travel in very thin vessels or capillaries, so you need good circulation to efficiently build up a good sweat and get rid of those unwanted “guests”.

The most efficient way to encourage good subcutaneous circulation is to exercise. The muscle contractions caused by physical activity stimulate blood circulation. Plus aerobic activity not only strengthens your bones, it also forces you to breathe deeply, which accelerates acid drainage via the lungs.

Heat dilates the capillaries, so it helps improve the blood flow volume. And that is why hot baths and saunas also detoxify your body, especially right after exercising.

Some Rules to Remember

If you wish to take a hot bath, make sure you increase the temperature gradually while you are in the bathtub. That’s because your pores close up to defend themselves from the heat, and this defeats the whole purpose.

Start at at comfortable temperature and raise it gradually until you reach your comfort level. You might notice that with time, you might tolerate higher temperatures. But don’t rush to increase the temperature because it can accelerate the circulatory load of toxins and you might overwhelm your detox systems.

Since you should drink plenty of fluids while you’re enjoying your hot bath, this is a great opportunity to try some delicious sweat-stimulating herbal teas. Elder berry, linden flower, burdock root, and wild pansy teas are my favorites.

After the bath, wrap yourself in a towel and rest for at least 15 minutes to allow your body temperature to normalize.

Foods that Improve Your Circulation

If you’re following the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, chances are you’re already eating Foundation Foods that improve circulation in addition to building your bones:

Vitamin C-rich foods: In the Osteoporosis Reversal Program you’ll find a long list of Foundation Foods that contain Vitamin C, such as oranges, tangerines, pineapple, cantaloupe, and broccoli. These are all alkalizing. With Vitamin C, I recommend you go the extra mile and also take a supplement. Besides all of its bone-building benefits, studies have shown that taking 500 mg a day of Vitamin C – which is the recommended daily dose in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program – improves vasodilation.1

Nuts and Seeds: Rich in Vitamin E, which is a natural and effective blood thinner and powerful antioxidant, the following nuts and seeds are alkalizing Foundation Foods: almonds, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds. On the acidifying spectrum, try walnuts, eggs, organ meats, and olives.

Bulbs: Onions are an outstanding source of bone-healthy polyphenols and its sulfur compounds also work as an anti-clotting agent. They are a Foundation Food thanks to their boron content, and they are a source of Vitamin C. And garlic is rich in sulfur compounds and well-known for its excellent anti-clotting properties.

Lycopene-Rich Foods: As I write in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, this potent antioxidant found in red foods such as watermelons, tomatoes and pink grapefruits plays an important role in bone health mainly because it protects bone cells from damage. Studies have shown that it is also improves circulation, so here’s one more reason to load up on these delicious foods.

Herbs and Spices: Both cayenne and turmeric improve blood circulation, so always keep a supply handy and try to use in as many dishes as possible.

The Circle of Health

Who would have thought that you can restore your bone health and increase your alkalinity by simple actions such as building up a sweat and eating delicious foods? This is further proof that when you’re doing what’s right for one aspect of your health, you’re also helping other important body processes.

Drugs don’t do that. In fact, more often than not they end up hurting other biological processes – those pesky side effects – which is a telltale sign that they don’t belong in your body.
As you can see, the Osteoporosis Reversal Program truly passes the “litmus test”, both metaphorically and literally. So don't sweat about your bone health… start sweating FOR your bone health.

Till next time,

I would avoid Fosamax like the plague. I took it for 6 years. My teeth though crowned were in excellent condition, I now only have 6 natural teeth left and the others all had to be taken out, in hospital as the dentists (UK) have been told not to remove teeth when the patient has taken Fosamax – it didn’t do my bones any good either! Caused stomach upsets. They prescribe these things without really knowing the long term effects. Fosamax also takes about 10 years to finally get out of your sytem after you have stopped taking it. The majorchenical pill companies have a lot to answer for.

Vivian, I didn’t know about the Bug Repellient. I am so glad to have found that out. I also am so glad to have found YOU. I remember how frightened I was when I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis, (the Silent Killer.) I too was not a Happy Camper. I was sure that I would not take the doctor’s advice and take those Horrid Drugs that did more harm than good for the patient with this dread disease. That’s when you Popped up on my computer screen and had exactly the answers I was looking for! Not only the answers but also the proof! Living Breathing Proof. I am glad I found someone who really knows how to “Save Our Bones” thanks Vivian, Joyce Hall

I cannot eat any citrus or take over-the-counter vitamin C as it makes my mouth break out in sores. I am not on any medication; take herbs & vitamins only for any problem. So am wondering what I can do to reverse this problem. I try to eat healthy as possible but cannot afford going organic. I love your program.

  4. D.

What about the ZERO water filter system? It works great for me. The best tasting water around. And it has a testing system that you always know when to change the filter. Check it out!!!

This is for Cora, who is still having intestinal problems. I have to tell you what helped my husband after several years of suffering with ulcerative colitis and taking two medications daily. Take folic acid supplements. He took 400 mcg two times a day. We discovered this accidentally six weeks after he began taking these little pills (very, very cheap), I noticed he wasn’t running to the bathroom multiple times in the morning, which he agreed was true. An internet search found two pieces of info to explain: 1) folic acid helps prevent ulcers of the stomach and INTESTINES, and 2) Statin drugs (cholesterol lowering) deplete the body of folic acid. My husband had been on statin drugs for 10 years. We zeroed in on folic acid as a cure because the only change in his diet was the folic acid pills, which we had read was good for his heart. I have to preface this by saying he also had gone off his ulcerative colitis medications two months earlier because he was having heart valve surgery. He has had no need for medications or gastrointologist appointments for ulcerative colitis for five years. Anyway, give it a try. Be patient, it took 6 weeks or so to notice results. His doctor did not respond when he wrote and told him about the folic acid success and he didn’t need to see him anymore

  9. D.

Vivian… see page 107 Chap. 9 in your book “Spelt” is listed both in Alkalizing Grains & Wheat column as well as in the Acidifying column ???

Also your Acidic and Alkaline foods vary greatly from Sherry Brescuia’s. Why the difference?

    • Susan

D, I already called about that question, and the folks in the office said it was alkaline, so I’ve made some pretty tasty sweet potato apple muffins out of it. It makes my crazy to see conflicting information on the food. I see it a lot, and you just have to decide who you’re going to trust, hold your nose, jump in and hope for the best. But I definitely know what you mean. I was on a site that said stay away from celery and sweet potatoes. Go figure.

I have been on your program for over a year. Struggle with chronic IBS (managed aprox. 70%) and at same time trying to help bones. Concerned diarrhea could be the effects from consuming Stevia. Also concerned that brands of Stevia causing malabsorption of calcium.
(ex. see https://qualityassurance.synthasite.com/truvia-sweetener—our-continuing-investigation.php) Weightloss has been relentless and the diet doesn’t seem to provide the calories I need.
Want to save my bones even though the problem doesn’t seem to be alkaline/acid imbalance.
    Need your advice.

    • Carole

      Hi Cora,
This is just a suggestion but perhaps you could try Natural yoghurt to increase the good/bad gut ratio, and try to look into digestive enzymes for your stomach/intestine. It sounds to me as if you are eating foods which either are not digesting properly(weight loss) and/or are eating too much fibrous food causing a fast transit through the gut. If you can eat porridge(gluten) try this with some plain natural yoghurt. It has fibre but is a slower released one and keeps you filled longer. Also try honey as a sweetener(if you want one) again gentler on the gut-but not too much at a time, although it can put on weight.Bananas are fibrous but again slow release and can be fattening. I don’t know if you are on medication but this can cause more problems also, so if you are taking any get them checked, and ask penty of questions.

    • Cora

I would like to add… I am not asking for medical advice. I need suggestions as to what to add to my diet to help gain back my weight, protect my bones and at the same time not aggrevate the IBS. One suggestion to go with 70/30 alka/acid hasn’t made any difference. Thank you for your consideration.

      Juvy,

I think you need to Google the Adobe Acrobat site, get on there and they will download it to your computer for free. I also think it’s Adobe Flash Player you’re talking about. Do the same thing there. There are free versions on these things. Somebody back me up. Is that right? I know I’m updating those things from time to time, and I know I didn’t buy them initially.

      • Mardy

Yes Susan, you are right. I downloaded it for free, and get updates periodically.

Hi Vivian from cyprus where there is a lot of sun, lovely weather and plenty of fruits.Thank you for your interest for our health.

  17. Carol

I would like to know why some people say yogurt is acidifying and others say it is alkalizing. Which is it?

I would also like to know why you don’t recommend strontium supplements.

I’ve been trying your program for the last 3 months. I pray to God that I am doing the right thing by not going on the drug the doctor is recommending.

    • Patricia (Yorkshire - United Kingdom)

      Hi Carol
Plain Natural Organic yogurt with NO added sugar or sweeteners its alkaline.
If sugars are added its acidic When buying yogurt read the labels carefully

  18. Greg Jemitola

Thank You Vivian. I have now downloaded my audio edition. I will be giving you updates as we go on.

I really appreciate all the reminders about the Foundation Foods. My favorite light snacks these days are grapes and cherry tomatoes. They’re actually much more satisfying than the crackers I used to grab on my way past the fridge.

  24. gene

Excellent and very helpful and keep up the good work.

  25. Virgina

Thank you for this information. Virginia

  26. Caroline

Thank you for your book, your blog, and your emails. I read a fair amount of material about health issues and have found your work to be of very high quality and very user friendly. The program is easy to follow, not laborious at all. I appreciate the frequent reminders about food and exercise!

  27. Ann

Vivian. I can’t thank you enough. In the last four months I put in a reverse osmosis water system, and have been following your counsel about eating. I am 63 and have had osteoporosis for about 15 years. My last bone density was in December. I went to the doctor last week and blew her mind. I have lost an average of five pounds a month (and I’m never hungry), my “bad” cholestrol dropped 50 points and my good cholestrol stayed the same (it has always been very high). My finger nails are strong and healthy–that’s really new. I feel great. Am off all anti-inflamatories, anti-histamines and am weaning myself off anti-depressives. My endocronolgist is amazed and neither of us can wait for my bone density test. My friends are telling their doctors about your eating plan. They are all waiting for my bone scan with great anticipation.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

That’s fantastic, Ann! It’s clear that your efforts are having a positive effect. Keep up the good work!

  28. Kathryn McIntee

Thank you my body thermostat has made me feel very ill for one week, and I have lost me appetite, but I feel more posative this morning, and have taken a list of food and vititinC to get me back on the right track.
