I had half of my thyroid removed due to a large nodule . I was glad to read that taking synthoid does not cause bone lose.

I'm curious to hear what you think of the following information. I've recently been diagnosed with hyperparathyrodism. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis (3-4 years ago) before the hyperparathyrodism. My physician thinks the osteoporosis has been caused at least in part by the problem with the parathyroid. After many tests, my endocrinologist referred me to an ENT specialist who is running more tests to prepare for removal of the offending parathyroid. The calcium level in a 24-hour urine test was very high, and I experience very nasty nausea several times daily, which the doctor believes is from the excessive calcium in my blood. She is limiting my intake of calcium and medication for osteoporosis until the parathyroid issue is resolved. Do you think my condition is being handled properly?

My thyroid was removed and currently taking the 100 dosage and my joints in my fingers and toes are hurting. My doctor really isn't in to me or any fixes to anything I am experiencing even my fatigue that was herendous, it is a bit better now but I still drink coffee every afternoon for a second wind!

Vivian:

I was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis but I have recently had an appointment with an endocrinologist at Duke University, Durham, nc. After another bone density scan there, he says I have osteopina and my bones don't look too bad!!. I have another visit with him in December and I think he is going to suggest reclast. I am a little hesitant to take this. I did take boniva but had the worst heartburn in my life (even worse than when I was pregnant), so I quickly stopped that.

I am still of the opinion that exercise and a healthet diet is the way to go.

Thank you for all your interesting e-mails.

It is a beautiful day on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Kind regards,

hello - please allow me to thank you for your encouragement and tips. I do not recall mentioning that i have hyperthyroid function, not discovered for years until i insisted on seeing an endocrinologist - i am on methimazole (tapazol) but now under the care of a specialist and will keep you posted. You are rendering an immense service to those of us not following doctors' orders blindly. thank you.

I appreciate all the time you take to help people like me! I was diagnosed with Osto. several years ago and was prescribed Fosamax. I took it for a few months, and gained weight. I asked Dr. if that would make me gain, of course she said "no way". After hearing from you and reading your letters, I stopped taking it, and am on Vit. D and calicum, and I'm trying to watch what I eat. (Not too good about that, tho) I had a hard fall a couple years ago, and with what the Dr. had told me (that I would break hip or bones if I fell) Thank God, all was all right. Not one broken bone. Only a terrible bruise on my hip bone that lasted for a good while. I have also been diagnosed with hypothyridism. I take only 1/2 of synthroid a day. (I'm to take a whole one, but, oh well...) I have started your "heel, jump" exercises and they make me feel better after I do them. I know they will do me good. Thanks again for all your info. I look forward to the next...
