Vivian Answers Day #24: Emotional Barriers, Calcium And Nutrition, Supplements And Longevity, Whey Protein, Osteoporosis Decisions, And More! - Save Our Bones

Question & Answer #1

I read in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program that stress releases cortisol, which hurts bones as much as an acid pH. I'm following the program, but lately I'm experiencing a lot of stress in my personal life and at work. I'm afraid that stress will slow down or even stop my bones from improving. I know that if I want to heal my bones and to stay healthy in general I need to solve this, but I don't know how. I don't want to take drugs, so please help me!

-Muriel

Dear Muriel,

It's true that the “fight or flight” hormone cortisol negatively affects your bone health and your overall health. The bad news is that the “quick fixes” offered by mainstream medicine don't get to the root of the problem. And you're right in not wanting to take the anti-anxiety drugs prescribed by doctors; they are highly addictive and have many undesirable side effects.

Question & Answer #2

I heard this morning that doctors are now saying that calcium supplements are not effective. I had bone scan two years ago and was diagnosed with osteopenia. I read your book and adopted some diet changes (including a plant based calcium supplement) one year later my bone scan came back “normal”. My question is, are my improved scans due to diet and supplements or diet alone?
Thanks!

-Mike

Dear Mike,

First I'd like to congratulate you on your perfect DXA results! Now to answer your question, the Medical Establishment is constantly trying to belittle natural health solutions and to glorify synthetic drugs. Flawed studies are often published in prestigious mainstream journals, in a desperate attempt to prove that natural supplements don't work. For example, a recent study has shown that those who took calcium supplements had an 86% greater chance of a myocardial infarction (MI) or heart attack than those who didn’t. But the study is full of errors and misconceptions, as I explain in my blog post titled ‘Confused About Calcium? Read This'. I urge you to read it, if you haven't yet.

Those of us who don't fall for this propaganda know that easy nutritional changes and the right dietary supplements can make a world of difference. Our biology is designed to thrive in the right environment. So when you give your bones what they need, such as nutrient-rich and pH balanced foods along with targeted micronutrients, you'll experience an improvement that will amaze you and your doctor.

To your bone health!

Question & Answer #3

My doctor told me to stop taking multivitamin capsules as research reported in the British Lancet had established that they shortened your life span. What is your opinion?

-Robin Hanson

Dear Robin,

As I've answered Mike in the previous Q&A, Big Pharma, aided by the Medical Establishment, is working hard to push away their main competitors: natural supplements. Fortunately, their methods are quite transparent, because the studies are flawed. The British Lancet study you mentioned compared the incidence of gastrointestinal cancers among study subjects who took the antioxidant supplements against placebo. And the researchers concluded that those who took the antioxidant supplements beta-carotene, vitamins A, C and E and selenium died prematurely.

But the study is flawed from the get-go because it included smokers, who are obviously at greater risk of dying of cancer anyways. This is only one example of many.

My opinion is that just taking supplements will not help improve health and longevity. If someone has bad nutritional and lifestyle habits, no dietary supplement in any dosage will have a clear positive effect. Attaining and maintaining good health is best achieved by applying an integrative approach that combines sound nutritional and lifestyle habits.

Keep asking questions!

Question & Answer #4

Just wanted to know if taking whey protein powder would make my osteoporosis
worse since it is a milk product? I am trying to build body mass since we loose a lot as we age.

-Carolyn

Dear Carolyn,

Even though whey protein powder is made from the dehydrated liquid that's left after milk curdles, it is an alkalizing beverage and a rich source of lactoferrin, a natural and powerful bone-building factor at the cellular level. In fact, I recommend drinking a whey protein shake daily, and especially after exercising. If you haven't yet, you can read more about it here.

Till next time,

Question & Answer #5

Do you think that an osteoporosis with T-score more than 4,0 (about 4,2-4,4) can be treated only with your program? Now I am 60 years old and have pain in my back and legs. I would like not to use any drugs for osteoporosis, but I am afraid it won’t be enough and later I could face much more problems?! I am in a very difficult situation. Please let me have your advise!

-Pepa Zareva

Dear Pepa,

As I wrote in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, bones are constantly renewing themselves… if you give them what they need. And if you think that NOT taking the osteoporosis drugs could cause you problems later on, think again! Drugs ARE the cause of problems, not the solution. They alter bone metabolism and have a long list of side-effects, some that may never go away. It's not worth taking a chance, especially when you can treat osteoporosis naturally.

Take a look at what happened to Ellen Law. She sent me her success story on August 2nd of last year:

Dear Vivian,

I will be 92 years old in November and cannot believe what has happened since I discovered you and your book. In 2008 my bone density was -4.3; in 2010 it was -4.1 difference. This was from taking Fosamax.
When I discovered you about 6 or 7 months ago, I told my doctor I was through with Fosamax and going with your program.

On June 6 I asked for another test to see if it was working and I am so happy to tell you that my one number went from -4.1 to -3.7 and the T-number went from -3.0 to -2.1. This is only a few months time which I think is great. I am also walking my dog about 40 minutes a day and go to the gym with a personal trainer twice a week. However, I was doing that before I discovered you!

So THANK YOU VERY MUCH for my improvement.

Stay healthy naturally!

I need help with knowing which supplements you recommend to meet the RDA. I ordered the TrueOsteo but I also need to know which organic, made from whole foods supplements meet the RDA you recommended so I don’t have to buy dozens of bottles! Is there a multivitamin that meets all the requirements?

  2. Judy G

I am interested in purchasing Densercise. Does the manual only come as an ebook?
Is there no hard copy? With only an ebook would that not mean that I have to be
near a computer to use it? My computer is not in a good place to do exercises. How can i get instructions that are portable?

    • Customer Support

      Hi Judy,
Yes, Densercise comes only as an ebook system, meaning it’s digital and delivered to your inbox as pdf files. 🙂 The manual, not the videos, is the primary instructional source; many people have luck printing the manual out, either on their home printer or through an office supply store.

Dear Vivian, I just joint your program and I’m really exciteted about it. I have osteoporosis. I’ve been in a very balanced diet, excercising all my life, getting sun, etc. I don’t know how it happened. Anyway, now I’m taking TrueOsteo, and my question is: Do I still need supplements? Is swimming a good exercise for the bones?

    Thanks

    Heloisa

  4. Marco Lima

Dear Vivian first of all I would like to thank your help.
Could you tell us what brand of whey protein powder do you recommend? there are so many on the market that it is difficult to know what is the best recommended in our case.

  5. Rowland Fujii

    Vivian:
Thank you for all your help. I noticed that my bones are not fragile.
I have been taking a whey protein shake Jillian Michaels. It is the only one that i found in Walmart that does not have artificial sweeteners sucralose.

  6. sheri

dear Vivian, thank you so much for all your hard work in making all of our lives healthier and more enjoyable. i was taking Fosomax a few years ago, for 3 years. instead of my test results coming back better, they came back worse!! i have been following your program for two years now. just went to my GYNO appt. i am lucky to have a practitioner who supports me in your program which i follow. guess what? i no longer have osteoporosis, but osteopenia!! hey! i’ll take that!! i also exercise 3-5 days a week at a gym, and i feel so great!! 61 years old and going strong!

    thank you again!!
    sheri

  7. Christine Zelehoski

I love your offerings and the Q and A’s. Thank you!

What kind of Calcium supplement would you recommend?

    • lula

I thought calcium supplements were bad – am taking D3 with K2 Is that enough. I was diagnosed with osteopina and maybe have osteoporosis now.

  8. Sally

    Hi Vivian

I have been diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus, and have been told that I will have to take proton pump inhibitors for the rest of my life. How can I protect my bones? I am 58 years old and exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. I do not want to end up on bone medications.

  9. Rose Appel

I can’t afford the product you recommend to distill water. Can you recommend a brand of distilled water that I can buy? What can I do to replenish the minerals i lose from drinking distilled water?
    Thank you.
    Rose Appel

  10. Pat Boyer

This is regard to taking supplements. I am a 5 year breast cancer survivor and my doctors keep telling me to take a multiple vitamin and a calcium supplement daily not the other way around (don’t take) along with exercising 2-3 times a week.

  11. Carleen Rowan

    Hi Vivian,

I have read that phytates and oxalates inhibit calcium absorption. Is this true and what food contain them? It seems to be a very confusing maze to weave through to figure out what eat or not and in what combinations.

    Your advice would be appreciated.

    Carleen

  12. Liana

    Hi Vivian!

How will taking whey protein powder affect my underactive thyroid?

    Thank you

  13. Mary Kay Rudeen

Hello Vivian…I ordered the TrueOsteo Aadvanced Bone Support that you recommended awhile back. But I noticed it only has 32mg of magnesium to the 360mg of calcium in it. My understanding is you have to have 50% of the maganesium to calcium ratio. I called the company and they said they did not know anything about this..if you recommended it I should ask you?? I was surprised they could not answer this basic question being they make this product. Anyways should I supplement a lot more magnesium with this calcium brand?? thanks…Mary Kay

    • Rose Appel

I’d like to know the answer regarding trueosteo because I bought it as well!

  14. Mike

I dont go to doctors, dont really care to unless I break my arm or something like that. I am 61 and very active, no problems other than occasional stiffness due to over doing something. The question I have is about my finger joints. The ring finger is very sore to the touch and makes it hard to play the guitar. Its the last joint before the finger nail and I can grip with it without too much pain but it is still sore to the touch. Its slightly larger in the joint area and is in both hands but moreso in my left. What can I take to get rid of this. I do follow a diet that Doug Kauffman suggests from Know the cause but am stuck with this annoying problem.

    • LynnCS

Since I went raw, my finger nodules have gone down and thumb joints are so much smaller, not pain and no heat. (as long as I maintain the great diet.) For almost a year I ate only a huge green smoothie in the morning/noon and mega green salad in the evening. I include 2T chia seeds in the smoothie, lemon, apple for taste and a big chunk of ginger. Great for anti inflammation. I stay away from grains and nightshade vegis for now.

    • deborah

I started drinking 4oz tart organic cherry juice twice a day. It has really helped my fingers.

    • Susan

Try taking gluten out of your diet for 30 days

  15. Marc

I am on 100g of aspirin a day. Is there a natural way of thinning blood? If there is, would it be too dangerous to change over to it?

    • jim

Fishoil will have a thinning effect on your blood. Safe and good for you.

    • Kathryn

Do not take aspirin!!!!! This is one reason so many people have Macular degeneration. It will ruin your veins, taken on a regular basis. It also makes your stomach bleed. Don’t do it!!

    • Dee

Hi, Alternative doctors say bromelain is a natural blood thinner.

    • Hi Marc

Vitamin K2 is known to be a blood thinner. You can get it at any health food store as a supplement along with Vit. D. Hope that helps.

      • Kathryn

Vit. K is synthesized in your own body if you have the right flora in your intestinal track. I would not take a supplement of K, other problems may occur. Take a good probiotic instead. As for thinning the blood take a GOOD Vit. E supplement every day. Find one with all 8 parts. Start with one and then add another in a week or so. This will regulate the blood , thin it if necessary or thicken it if necessary. E will regulate the blood!

      • cb

Although sometimes confusing, my research has determined:

“Vitamin K is not a blood thinner. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. This essential organic compound is necessary in order for your blood to coagulate and form clots to stop bleeding. ”

Everytime I try K-2, I get nose bleeds. What does this tell you?

  16. Erika Chemnitz

    Dear Vivian,
I bought a couple of kilos of ACE Whey Protein Isolate, but a naturopath told me that this ‘type’ of whey powder was rather toxic because of the way it is produced.
Please give me your opinion on that. I have noticed that I get quite bloated when I drink it.
Thank you and God bless you.
    Erika

    • Anita

I am gluten and dairy free and I use Hemp Protein Power
and Almond Milk. Why Protein Isolate is over processes.
I have allegries to gluten and dairy so I am try to be careful in keeep myself in balance with eating a healthy diet of Whole foods, like fruit, vegetables , grains and protein.

I got this from Swanson Vitamins on August 12, 2012

An Old Time Trick for Joint Pain

“Experts know all about glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid and MSM for joint pain, but here’s an old time remedy experts can’t explain: Gin Raisins. This involves soaking golden Thompson raisins in a container and covering them with gin. Leave an inch of liquid above the raisins, cover with a paper towel (an air-permeable covering allows most of the alcohol in the gin to evaporate) and let sit for two weeks. After that timeframe, cover with a real lid and consume up to 10 a day. It could be the antioxidants in grapes or that fact that gin contains juniper, an herb that may help reduce inflammation. Nobody knows why or how this works for sure!”

      • LynnCS

Juniper and grapes/raisins can be readily accessed through reliable health stores and some sights on the internet. Better not to encourage the use of alcohol to anyone looking for a way to cut down on inflammation. There is no guarantee the alcohol will evaporate. Better to find alternative methods.

        • Kate

Tossing out alcohol wholesale might be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Alcohol in tinctures and such have a great carrier effect.
Maybe juniper berries AND raisins soaked in gin.
