The Save Our Bones Weekender: October 6, 2012 - Save Our Bones

I hope you enjoy the first edition of the Save Our Bones Weekender. This will become a semi-regular feature, where you'll get a recap of the latest osteoporosis news, as well as an opportunity to revisit a blog post from this time one year ago. Plus I'll also share news stories or videos that I hope will make you smile and make your weekend a little brighter. So let's get right to it…

Osteoporosis News

This one is “hot off the press”. Prolia (denosumab) has been approved for use in men with high risk of fractures:

And believe it or not, one of my osteoporosis predictions for the future is becoming a reality right now:

Last October I brought you the Bone Healthy Dynamic Duo – a deliciously alkalizing and nutrient-rich snack:

I also shared with you bad news about bisphosphonates (so what else is new, right?) and about Aquatic Osteoporosis here:

    Dear Vivian,
I read your email every week and appreciate it very much! Thanks so much. My doctor wants me to take the Reclast shot but thanks to you and your info I have refused. I recently saw on one of your publications the calcium supplement you recommend and how to order but I can not find it. Please send me this info. Very much thanks, Paula Smith

    Hi Vivian,

Thanks for the cute video. We are celebrating Thanksgiving this week-end here up North.

I have a question regarding calcium supplements. I have been taking 800 i.u of ”D” with them but I don’t know whether I should discontinue with the calcium. I eat a lot of calcium rich foods like almonds, tahini, broccoli and natural organic yogourt. Some milk, of course – can’t break the habit completely but cutting down, replacing by almond milk for example. I can ask my family physician but i feel that I have to make that decision myself and I value your opinion more than my doctor’s .

Thanks again for your comments and help

    Monique

Just wondered about your thoughts on coeliac disease and if you think there might be some relationship with osteoporosis etc.

    Vivian

I read Dr.Marchione’s report on calcium supplements and I agree with him. The only concern I have is that he doesn’t discern between fermented and non-fermented soy and therefore doesn’t stress that fermented soy is what you want to be consuming.

  11. Avelina

Thanks for the video Vivian. My 7-year old grand daughter enjoyed it too.

  12. Tawny

Thanks for the cockatoo video. Made my day for sure. All I get is yelled at, so I needed something to cheer me up.

  13. Maria Nielsen

Vivian, thank you for cute parot dancing video, I had a blast dancing with snowball. I also enjoyed listening to report on homeopathy. I have used it and it helped me greatly with several things in the past so I can say it works well with no side affects. I am almost 65 and I don´t use any drugs, I don´t even have aspirin at home. Thanks for everything you do.

  14. Sharon

Love Snowball! I once had a cockatoo very much like him, so this brought back lovely memories. Thanks!

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Yes, he’s adorable!

  15. Robbie

Vivian, do you have a prepared menu, 7 day more or less made out?
    Thanks,
    Robbie

I have MS and a degenerative back plus severe osteoporosis and a 30 day meal planner with some easy recipes would be a great gift. Thank you in advance.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Robbie, I’m working on a 30 deal planner as well as bone-healthy recipes. So stay tuned 🙂

  16. Caroline

Thank you for this fun video, Vivian! I would love for you to write about GMOs (food containing genetically modified organisms), where genes are altered in order to make corn, soy, Hawaiian papayas, rice, and other foods more resistant to pesticides, thus allowing more pesticide spraying of the crops. There is new research from France showing that GMO corn, as well as the pesticide Round-Up that is used on the crops, create massive tumors. These must have a terrible effect on our bones too. The grocery shelves are stocked with cereals, chips, and other foods that contain high fructose corn syrup (also GMO!). We can buy organic foods and foods that say “non-GMO” on the label, and let our grocers know we won’t buy foods containing GMOs. And those in California can vote for Proposition 37, which would require that altered foods be labeled GMO. It is our right to know what is in our food!

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Caroline, the infestation of our food supply with GMO is a terrible thing. I do advise everyone to stay away from all GMO crops. One of the easiest ways to do that is to stay away from processed foods and to buy organic as much as possible.

  17. Celestina Marie

This is a great addition with the weekender and sweet Snowball is a darling dancing. I agree with Bea, great way to start the weekend.
Thank you Vivian for all you do to bring us important Osteoporosis info.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

You’re welcome! And enjoy your weekend 🙂

  18. Bea

Great way to start the day watching Snowball dance to Michael Jackson’s music!!
