3 Little-Known And Amazing Calcium Facts - Save Our Bones

Calcium’s important role in bone health is no secret, but today you’ll discover some seldom-mentioned functions of this fascinating mineral.

Calcium plays many roles in the body that go beyond its status as the primary mineral in bone. From metabolism to muscle contraction, calcium’s functions go beyond bone health.

Also, calcium is necessary for the differentiation and proliferation of osteoblasts, bone-building cells, via complex synergistic action with a binding protein that also performs many other important functions in the body.

So get ready to be amazed with three little-known calcium facts I can’t wait to share with you today!

1. Calcium Creates Electricity

Have you ever wondered about the term “electrolyte”? The word denotes electricity, and that’s because electrolytes – key minerals that include calcium – conduct electrical currents across cell membranes, thus allowing for key elements and water to pass across the membrane and into the cell. The same process allows the cell to excrete waste.

When it comes to electrolytes, most people think of potassium and sodium only. But calcium facilitates the passage of various elements into cells, which ties in with the pH balance that is the main building block of the Osteoporosis Reversal Program. pH means “potential hydrogen.” Acidic substances release hydrogen, so the potential hydrogen (pH) is low. Your body’s pH level is indicative of the force between alkaline-forming, negative ions and acid-forming positive ions, which push against each other, creating a measurable electrical resistance.

In this dynamic balancing act, calcium works in tandem with sodium and potassium to create the electrical charge that keeps your heart beating. When blood pressure allows sodium to enter a special group of cells called the Sinoatrial node, potassium leaves the cell at the same time. Less potassium leaves the cell than sodium enters it, however, creating an ever-growing positive charge. When the charge builds to a certain point, calcium channels in the cell membrane open, discharging the positive electrical charge along the nerves that lead to the heart. Amazing!

And it all depends on calcium.

2. Your Muscles Need Calcium

A biological process known as the calcium cycle prompts the contraction and relaxation of muscle fibers. A complex interplay between a calcium ion (Ca+2), proteins, and receptors modulate the triggers that cause skeletal muscle to contract and relax.

Calcium also regulates energy metabolism and keeps muscle structure strong and flexible. In fact, Ca+2 influences genetic material in the cellular nuclei, thus strongly influencing development and differentiation (more on that in a moment).

Calcium’s functions in muscle fiber are so complex that the exact mechanisms by which all of them are accomplished still remain unknown.

3. Calcium Is Required For The Proliferation And Differentiation Of Bone-Building Cells (Osteoblasts)

Savers are well aware that calcium makes up a large part of the bone matrix, and that osteoblasts are bone-building cells. But what you may not know is the role of a binding protein, calmodulin, which plays a role in many body processes, including inflammation control, transport of elements between cells, memory, and immunity (to name a few).

Calmodulin (CaM) regulates key bone morphogenetic protein signaling. These key proteins (BMP-2 and TGF-β) are growth factors that play a role in osteoblast differentiation. CaM also binds a particular estrogen receptor, increasing that receptor’s transcription.

Research has shown that inhibiting CaM levels actually reduces bone formation and the differentiation of osteoblasts. During bone remodeling, Ca+2 increases, thus regulating osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. It does this by activating calcium-sensing receptors or increasing the amount of calcium in the osteoblasts themselves.

Ca+2 is dependent on CaM to do its job in and among the cells of your body, and without these vital substances working together, your bones can not rejuvenate.

Calcium Is Vital For Bone Health And Overall Health

As you can see, calcium is about far more than the integrity of your bones. And it’s clear that its ultimate function is on a cellular level, and unless the calcium you’re taking in is the right kind, it’s not going to be able to pass across cell membranes and do its many jobs.

That’s why I was so pleased to find the calcium supplement TrueOsteo™.

What Makes TrueOsteo Different?

TrueOsteo™ is an organic, plant-based calcium derived from algae. Not only does it contain other Foundation Supplements such as magnesium, Vitamins K2 and D3, but it also has stress-busting Ashwagandha extract and organic silicon.

TrueOsteo™ contains just 800mg of calcium per serving, and you take four capsules a day. While 800mg may not seem like much, the fact is that the organic calcium in TrueOsteo™ is so readily absorbed by the body that you simply don’t need massive doses to get what you need.

TrueOsteo™ is the calcium supplement I take, and I have always been satisfied with it. However, if you think that TrueOsteo™ is not for you, you can return the unused portion for a full refund.

I do love the way you have presented this particular situation plus it does give us a lot of fodder for consideration. On the other hand, because of what I have personally seen, I just wish when other comments stack on that people remain on issue and not embark on a tirade involving some other news du jour. Yet, thank you for this excellent point and though I can not concur with the idea in totality, I respect the viewpoint.

I didn’t mean to post this as a reply to someone else’s comment. This is a question to SAVEOURBONES:
I searched on TrueOsteo in the Consumer Labs DB; not found. Next I searched on the vendor TrueNature and found a serious warning. TrueNature was recently implicated in a lawsuit for making false claims about two of their products. They settled for just over half a million $$$s. There is no way I will purchase something from a company with this reputation! Can you please make a suggestion for a reputable vendor who creates a solid calcium supplement?

    • Lee Fahey

      Additional information:
      – The vendor is NatureCity, LLC
      – The warning was posted 10/22/19
      – The products with the false claims were TrueAloe and AloeCran

After reading the claims about TrueOsteo, it sounds “too good to be true.” I feel very leery about this one so I will request ask Consumer Labs to review this product, then proceed accordingly.

I cannot find how many days worth of TrueOsteo are in a bottle at four per day. I am sure it is somewhere but…
Thank you for all the good information.

I have not been able to find a complete mineral analysis of AlgaeCal, which is the calcium source in True Osteo. I have one for Aquamins, which I have been taking for several years. There are things like Fluoride and Barium in it, of course in trace amounts, but I wonder if the beneficial minerals are somehow separated from the full spectrum of trace minerals in this supplement.

Can I take Trueosteo for I had kidney stones in the past?

  6. margaret Sanders

I noticed this product has Strontium. My functional med doctor told me because of my thyroid issues she does not recommend this for bones. I have to take Ostero instead.

  7. Alice Lawson

I am so glad I learned about Tru Osteo from you. My dexascans have improved since I’ve been taking it.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

That’s great, Alice! Keep up with what you’re doing 🙂

  8. Norma

I have taken TruOsteo for about a year now, and my scalp feels very hard and teeth feel very strong, my ph use to be 8 for years, now it is a 7 which is good….and I thank Vivian for her good advice on many things…..and of course I exercise for 10 minutes every day….I am 86 years young….

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Good job, Norma! Keep up the good work and keep on inspiring others. 🙂

  9. Paula Geluso

    Dear Vivian;
Heartfelt thanks for your medical advice, which is clear and most helpful, all the time.
I have an inflammation problem that causes water retention, and a host of other problems including arthritis . I tried calcium supplements years ago and it made my arthritic nodes more painful than ever, so I stopped taking it. Would your new supplement be of help in this matter? I do take 1,000 mg of Vit D.m and have a tendency for rapid heartbeat..so am on a very low dose of beta blocker. The water retention is worse on the Beta Blocker… thank you! Much appreciative of your time and effort onour behalf.I have your books and follow as best I can dietwise.I do not have brittle bones..just arthritic ones!:)
    Paula

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Hi Paula,
In most cases arthritis is either caused by too much accumulation of acid residue in the joints, or it could be caused by something else. But it’s aggravated by too much acid accumulation. We have found that many in the Save Our Bones community experience relief from arthritis when on the program. Even though it’s specifically for bone health, reducing acid residue and bringing the proper acid/alkaline balance to the body is precisely what the Osteoporosis Reversal Program is designed to do. 🙂 As far as TrueOsteo is concerned, I can’t predict what it will do for any particular individual with arthritis. Hope this helps.

  10. Patricia evans

I am taking 600mg of Calcium down from 1200 mg day.
This was recommend by my Dr as it is thought calcium can help cause heart attack’s.
My reason for mentioning this is I Read that you are saying to take 800mg four times a day of Osteo-blast seems rather high when diet eating more calcium loaded foods which are better absorbed would be a better alternative.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Patricia, your doctor is absolutely right if you’re taking calcium carbonate or some other form of inorganic calcium. If you’d like to read more about the connection between calcium supplements and heart attack, you can do so at this link:

      https://saveourbones.com/calcium-heart-attack/

      • Patricia

I believe there is a misunderstanding in this comment. TruOsteo has a total of 720 mg a day, not four times a day as Patricia Evans wrote in her question.

I wonder why you are recommending this supplement rather than AlgaeCal Plus which I am currently taking.

  11. Carole

I read an article that said pills in capsule form do not dissolve to allow the benefit of its contents. Has TrueOsteo been tested to determine what percentage is absorbed?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Carole, the calcium in TrueOsteo is formulated for maximum absorption. And it is in capsule form, so your body does not have to break down hard tablets. 🙂

  12. Sheena

Unfortunately, we cannot get ‘TrueOsteo’ is South Africa…it does sound amazing!

  13. Ann

So I take my TruOsteo in morning breakfast and dinner in evening
