3 Ways To Prep Your Skin For Maximum Vitamin D Absorption - Save Our Bones

The season for outdoor activities is almost here, and chances are, you’ll be spending more time in the sun. As Savers already know, sunlight is the best way to get Vitamin D, so it makes sense that the condition of your skin matters a whole lot .

Sunlight also lifts your mood and eases bone-damaging depression. With today’s three easy tips, you’ll maximize Vitamin D absorption, ensuring that you’ll get the most bone-building benefits from this crucial vitamin.

Let’s get right to it!

1. Exercise Regularly

Science has clearly shown that exercise actually improves the integrity of your skin. The secret lies in collagen, a connective tissue that is found in hair, nails, skin, and bones, and is responsible in large part for your bones’ flexibility.

When you exercise on a regular basis, you’re preparing your skin for springtime sun exposure by boosting collagen production and integrity, which can also repair sun-damaged skin.

Scientific Proof That Exercise Turns Back The Clock On Skin

Researchers found that study participants who exercised regularly greatly improved their skin integrity – in fact, participants over the age of 65 developed skin on par with someone in their 30s or 40s!1

When skin is damaged by too much sun exposure, collagen is lost and replaced with a substance called elastin. Researchers “dissolved” elastin in sun-damaged skin, and found that collagen was intermingled with the elastin, masking its presence.2

Of course, regular exercise also improves bone strength and flexibility, as Savers know. So it gets your skin, muscles, and bones ready for outdoor activities.

2. Drink This Smoothie Often

Regardless of what you put on your skin, if you have a poor diet, your skin will show it. This same principle applies to bone health: what you put in to your body is directly “mirrored” in the state of your bones, hair, skin, and so forth. That’s why the Osteoporosis Reversal Program is rooted in delicious, nourishing foods that rejuvenate your bones, skin, and every body system.

Here’s a good example of an excellent drink that nourishes your skin from the inside. This delicious green smoothie has several Foundation Foods that provide the nutrients your bones and skin need to radiate youthful health and vitality.

3. Scrub Your Skin With Sugar

Finally, a bone-healthy, skin-renewing use for sugar! You see, sugar helps slough off old skin cells so your skin will look fresh and youthful. And unlike commercial scrubs and face masks, this easy-to-make DIY recipe is free from chemical additives and toxins, such as:

  • Polyacrylamide
  • Laureth-7
  • Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate
  • Butylene glycol
  • Fragrance (usually this vague term denotes parabens)
  • C13-14 Isoparaffin

…to name a few!

Also, this scrub is inexpensive in comparison to store-bought products, and a great way to use the white sugar that is sitting in your pantry.

Here is the recipe:

DIY Bone-Healthy Sugar Scrub

Makes about 1 ½ cups

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sweet almond oil (you can choose a different skin-friendly oil if you like, or combine oils)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 5 drops of your favorite essential oil (Personally, I like to use orange essential oil for this recipe.)

Directions:

Stir all ingredients together in a medium bowl. Pour into a glass jar and cover.

Use this scrub on freshly cleansed skin. You can use it on your face, heels, hands, elbows, or wherever you’d like to remove old skin and promote a healthy glow. Rub it into your skin gently for 30-60 seconds, and then rinse with warm water. For a deeper moisturizing effect, allow the mixture to sit on your skin for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing.

If you like, follow the scrub with this DIY moisturizer. It’s also free of toxic chemicals, and contains only skin-renewing, bone-healthy ingredients.

Remove Toxins To Rejuvenate Skin And Bones

As I mentioned earlier, what you put into your body shows on your skin and in the health of your bones. Toxic chemicals promote oxidative damage, one of the key effects of aging. Avoiding them as much as possible is important, but since exposure to some degree is inevitable, removing them is a vital component to younger, healthier skin and bones.

If you are familiar with the Osteoporosis Fresh Start Cleanse: The 7 Day Bone Building Accelerator, then you know how much younger you look and feel after doing this cleanse. It’s an excellent way to prepare your skin and your whole body to usher in spring and absorb bone-healthy sunlight.

In the green smoothie, do I use a whole lemon or the juice of a lemon?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

I like to simply peel and slice the lemon, remove the seeds, and add the pieces to the smoothie. 🙂

  2. Marion

    Hello Vivian,

The DIY Bone Healthy Sugar Scrub. How often should I scrub my face with it and can I keep it on the shelf in a cool place, or do I need to keep it in the refrigerator.

  3. Concerned

I have read numerous times that sugar is very toxic to the human body. My question is: By using the sugar scrub, won’t it get absorbed into the skin?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Sugar (sucrose) is a rather large molecule that is not readily absorbed into the skin. It enters the bloodstream when ingested, because the process of digestion breaks down the molecules into particle sizes that are small enough to be utilized by cells.

    Hi Vivian,
Thank you for all your advise. I only just tried last weekend”s hip and core strengthening exercise today and find it great. I really can feel the effect already.
I was thinking of getting a skipping rope with a digital counter and building on that too. Would that be beneficial?
Also with regards to today’s post on skin, I have been reading recently about MSM cream (contains sulfur) and all of it’s benefits. Seemingly sulfur promotes collagen in all tissues and cells and is therefore also good for bones. I believe it comes in supplements too. Have you ever heard of MSM and would you recommend it?
    Thanks once again.
    Barbara

  5. Ellen

    Hi Vivian

One of my friends introduced your website to me. I am 60 years old and have been taking steroids to replace my adrenal glands for the last 16 years. Is there anything I can prevent osteoporosis as I was told one of steroids’ effects is this problem. I had aortic dissection three years ago on top of 10 other surgeries. I have done ball room dancing for 8 years but when I stopped during 6 months recuperation my knee muscles get weak. Your encouragement gives hopes to so many and I love to get your tips. Thanks

    Thanks Ellen

Love all the recipes and always try them all. Can you share more of the perfume ones?
I like flower and clean smells for my sheets and laundry too.
    Thank you, Susan.

Milk is out if you have osteoporosis, but is cheese also not good for bones?

    • Andrea Tekirian

      Hi Vivian,
I have stopped drinking milk as you suggested and now drink cashew or coconut milk because I’m allergic to almonds and soy, but I do eat a variety of cheese. Is that OK?

      Andrea

  8. Jan

Oops – today’s blog included a link to a DIY moisturizer recipe that turned out to be a face wash. Did I miss something? Or was that a mistake?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

The recipe is for a moisturizing face wash, so it’s a great way to moisturize after applying a scrub. 🙂

  9. Elle

  10. Pat

Like Susan, I too would like to know why my upper arms are getting wrinkles? I do tons of push up and planks.
    Thanks,
    Pat

  11. Sheena

Thank you for your generosity in helping us. Especially the interesting information on chemicals found in most everyday cosmetic products.
I am going to try the homemade scrub and the non toxic cleanser.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Let us know how you like them, Sheena!

  12. Susan

I am 54 and have always exercised religiously but I have been diagnosed with fairly advance osteoporosis. Having a hard time convincing my doctors (except my chiropractor who feels that at 5 feet tall and 88 pounds I don’t need a lot of bone mass to support me) that I do not wish to take meds. Ordered your book and am trying my best to avoid the medication route. I have a question thought re. skin. The skin on my upper arms has gotten so wrinkly and saggy (despite multiple push-ups, planks etc) that I am embarrassed to go sleeveless. I believe stress (which I have somewhat reduced) is the cause of my arm issues AND the osteoporosis. Any suggestions? Summer’s approaching and I dread the exposure!

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Hang in there, Susan, and stick to your beliefs! As far as the skin on your upper arms goes, the sagging and wrinkles could be caused by any number of factors. Maybe it would help to try some of the suggestions in today’s post! 🙂

  13. Johanna

Hi Vivian, I have clicked on some of your links with Free information but nothing ever arrives… not sure what the problem is…

Hey, I use coconut oil on my skin as a moisturerizer and find its great… whats your opinion…:-)

  14. Mary

Could you please share the DIY moisturizer recipe? Thanks!

  15. jeanie

Two years ago I ditched drugs to follow “Save our Bones”. Had a battle with doctors. I was sent for another dexa scan two weeks ago which they hoped would prove I needed drugs. I DON’T need them, they now agree I am doing well without them. I am elated. Thank you Vivian so much for giving me the courage to help myself.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Congratulations, Jeanie! You deserve a big pat on the back for sticking to your beliefs when mainstream medicine was pressuring you to take the drugs. Fantastic news!

  16. NGOZI

Thanks Vivian for sharing. This is quite beneficial. thanks
