3 Ways To Shield Your Bones From This Harmful Toxin - Save Our Bones

Even if you try, it could be difficult to avoid this toxin that hurts bones. Like so many toxins, it’s widespread. And don’t let the fact that it’s found in nature fool you, because it’s used in ways that nature never intended.

For example, it is purposely used as a “healthy supplement” in products used every day, such as tap water and toothpaste. And unbeknownst to most, it’s also the active ingredient in agricultural fumigation products.

By now you most certainly know that I’m talking about fluoride.

Avoiding Fluoride: the Challenge

Fluoride is often touted by dentists as the best product we can use to avoid tooth decay. We are told to get fluoride-containing toothpaste, fluoride treatments on our teeth; and we are told how great it is for our teeth that fluoride is in tap water. Of course, as a Save Our Bones community member, you know better.

But as much as you may try to stay away from tap water and even if you’re using fluoride-free toothpaste, avoiding all fluoride is practically impossible. This topic is discussed in great detail in the Osteoporosis Hydration Protocol, which is part of the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, including the damaging effects of fluoride on bones and ways to decrease your exposure to this dangerous toxin.

Decreasing your exposure to fluoride is definitely possible…and necessary.

How to Decrease Your Absorption of Fluoride

Isn’t it encouraging to know that there is a natural way to reduce fluoride absorption? And it gets better—the substances that decrease fluoride absorption are Foundation Supplements, those crucial vitamins and minerals discussed in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program.

There are 3 Foundation Supplements in particular that stave off the absorption of fluoride after you’ve been exposed to it.

Like so many substances, fluoride is absorbed in the stomach and small intestine. From there it enters the bloodstream, where it quickly gets into your bones…unless you stop it with some key nutrients.

So let’s start with one of the nutritional giants…

Foundation Supplement #1: Magnesium

It turns out that magnesium follows a very similar absorption path as fluoride. As mentioned above, fluoride quickly assimilates into bone—but so does magnesium. According to a study by the American Institute of Nutrition, a diet low in magnesium results in a higher concentration of fluoride in the bones. In the study, rats that were fed a low-magnesium diet had significantly higher fluoride in their femurs and teeth.1 This is likely due to the fact that magnesium and fluoride are absorbed via the same biological path.

“Since bioavailability of Mg and F- depends on their mutual ratio in the diet, a low magnesium diet distinctly increases F- absorption in the intestines,”1 the study reports.

In other words, too little magnesium means too much fluoride. So it makes sense to reverse this by boosting magnesium intake—more magnesium means less fluoride toxicity. The study’s conclusion agrees:

“In summary, it can be stated that in intoxication with fluorine compounds, magnesium plays a protective role by countering and reducing the toxic effects of F-.”1

If you have the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, you already know exactly how much magnesium you need to take and that you should keep the ratio of calcium to magnesium at 2:1. So for example, if you’re taking 1000 mg of calcium, you’ll need to take at least 500 mg of magnesium.

Foundation Supplement #2: Calcium

Ah, calcium—the “go to” mineral for those seeking help for osteoporosis. But as regular readers know, and as I write in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, just popping a calcium tablet every day is not what it’s all about. These Foundation Supplements all work together, and calcium, while very important, is not a “Lone Ranger” mineral.

But I’ll repeat—calcium is very important, and here’s another reason why: it protects your bones against the toxic effects of fluoride.

This protective effect was observed in the bones of animals fed a fluoride-containing diet. High calcium intake was shown to prevent the toxic effect of fluoride. “…elevated levels of calcium in the diet are capable of preventing the osteomalacic effects of high levels of fluoride,”2 concludes a study published in the Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine.

Another study, this time from Germany, showed that “Calcium reduces fluoride absorption.”3 This conclusion is backed up by a French study revealing that the “fluoride peak level is lower and delayed”4 in individuals who ingested fluoride and calcium at the same time.

Foundation Supplement #3: Vitamin C

Here’s a Foundation Supplement that you may not associate with bone health. But Vitamin C is not only good for bones; it’s vital. That’s why it’s a Foundation Supplement.

Vitamin C helps bones in all kinds of ways, and here’s another: it increases fluoride excretion from the body, and it can also reverse fluorosis.

Vitamin C flushes fluoride from the body, keeping it from getting absorbed into your bones.
When patients with endemic fluorosis were given 2 grams (2000 mg) daily of Vitamin C, the participants showed measurable urinary excretion of fluoride, and this was constant for four weeks.5

Interestingly, Vitamin C has also been shown to reverse the effects of clinical and dental fluorosis, suggesting that Vitamin C may have a means other than increased excretion for combating the toxic effects of fluoride.

Not long ago, the toxic effects of damaging dental fluorosis were considered irreversible. But Vitamin C offers some hope.

In one study, children ages 3 to 12, who regularly consumed water with 4.5 or 8.5ppm (parts per million) of fluoride showed various degrees of fluorosis. The children were given 500mg Vitamin C, 250mg calcium, and 800IU Vitamin D3. After 44 days, the fluorosis (clinical and dental) showed complete reversal. The children who drank the 8.5ppm fluoride water experienced a slower reversal—until their Vitamin C intake was increased to 750mg daily. Then reversal was notable and more rapid.6

Because of the complete reversal of the fluorosis, we can conjecture that more is going on here than just flushing fluoride out of the body. It may have something to do with the combination of vitamins that were given to the children. That’s because…

Vitamin C and Calcium are Powerful Partners

Taking calcium and Vitamin C together has been shown to help reverse fluoride toxicity. When rats were given these two supplements together, signs of fluoride toxicity in various body systems were reversed.

Taking these three Foundation Supplements, which is recommended in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, protects you from the damaging effects of fluoride. So when you follow the supplement plan in the Program, you’ll be protecting your bones, teeth, and your overall health.

It’s important to protect as many aspects of your health as possible, because frankly…

Toxins Are Everywhere

Toxins are present in substances like plastic, in personal care products, and even in the air we breathe. Toxins are mixed into processed food and outgassed from carpet glue and air fresheners.

And of course, toxins in the form of osteoporosis medications are widely prescribed.

Even if you are doing everything you can to avoid and protect against toxin exposure, it’s still a good idea to do some regular maintenance in the form of cleansing.

Think about it—you take your car in for a regular oil change, and you do various kinds of home maintenance repairs and tasks. Why not do the same for your body?

Toxins have all kinds of detrimental effects on your health, including compromising the proper functioning of your vital organs. And their effects appear to be cumulative. So it’s a good idea to “tune up” your toxin-weary body before these poisons get a chance to accumulate.

With this in mind I created the Osteoporosis Fresh Start Cleanse: The 7 Day Bone Building Accelerator, a unique, 7-day cleanse designed to clear your body of osteoporosis drugs and other toxins. And now there’s…

A New Expanded Edition of Osteoporosis Fresh Start Cleanse!

That’s right – I’ve added even more to this already-effective cleanse. The Osteoporosis Fresh Start Cleanse: The 7 Day Bone Building Accelerator, is a 6-step program, and each step discusses the step-by-step cleansing process. In the New Expanded Edition, you will find more recipes, particularly recipes for Step 3, which involves eating one raw meal a day.

I read somewhere that taking calcium at the same time with magnesium is not optimum timing for magnesium to do its job. It went unexplained so I looked for other research to verify it. Sure enough, other research confirmed it. We need to take magnesium at least one hour before taking calcium. Calcium overpowers magnesium and it won’t be absorbed to do its job to get calcium to our bones.

It’s a pain to have to time these vitamins and minerals but more evidence is showing up to convince me that it’s imperative to do so. The latest news is directing us to eat at least half our dose of calcium in food stuffs instead of pill form. That might be hard to do too.

What do you know about coffee intake? Does this deplete calcium obsorption?

    • mike

i’ve read for many yrs that it does & probably other minerals, etc. it’s a diuretic. don’t believe the “research” that coffee is good for u. the risks outweigh the benefits.

Vivian I AM A FOLLOWER AND A BELIEVER. No fluoride, more Calcium, less red meat, more fresh veggies. I can say I feel better each day of my life. I sleep well and work hard. I still have the desire to live healthy. I think of you often and remember when I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis. I really thought I was on my way out in a hurry. I have been doing the diet and the exercise almost two years can you believe it! I have had a few set backs do to past life style, but enjoy all your ideas and knowledge to SAVE OUR BONES. I can’t take Calcium without magnesium, D3, and K2, but, I’m not able to take magnesium in any form I have thus far discovered without disastrous intestinal effects. How much magnesium can I get from almond butter? I seem to be able to tolerate this if I take about 3/4 tsp a day. Is this enough magnesium to be able to take calcium?

  15. Mary Kay Rudeen

Dear fellow readers, does anyone out there have a suggestion for this. After I eat anything, I get a lot of plegm in chest and throat and constantly clear my throat. I am a healthy 63 old who eats mostly organic foods, no coffee, alchohol, no preservatives and only takes organic calcium. Very frustrating…trying to figure out what I can take naturally. Thanks!!

    • Cath. England

What about serrapeptase, to remove any inflammation it is very good for this. I have used it and it worked for me. Hope this helps.

    • JPL

      Hi, Mary,
If previous suggestions posted by Others do not work for you, please re-post again, and I’ll share my experience when I see the post. That said, my problem was in the throat, and not in the chest area.
I hesitate to do so now, because that might not be the cause, and might be taken as “personal” or “insulting”, and I don’t want to offend anyone.
      Take care,
      JPL 3/2/2013

    • Sharon

Phlegm is caused by inflammation which is the result of an acidic system.
It’s all very fascinating. Food combining is the solution. Check out the website
greattastenopain (Great Taste No Pain). The information is very much in keeping
with the Osteoporosis Reversal Program. You will be happily amazed.
Another help . . . a homeopathic nasal spray Xlear, properly pronounced ‘Clear’.
This product thins the mucus & is found in most health food stores.

    • Jennie

I sometimes get this reaction when I’ve eaten something spicy. When I find that I have a lot of phlegm in my system, I use a neti pot (available for around $15 at places like Walgreens) to flush out the mucous that builds up. After a few weeks of regular use, you probably won’t need it so much, but it does make you feel really clear headed and I like the way it feels.

      • Mary Kay Rudee

Thanks Jennie, that is something I have not used although is it just for phlegm in the nose, head? I wonder if it would work for phlegm in the chest?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Mary Kay, some members of the Save Our Bones community have mentioned that cutting out dairy products resulted in less phlegm and mucous, especially after eating. 🙂

      • Mary Kay Rudee

Thanks but I have been off dairy ever since I’ve been on your site for 4 years. I do the Almond milk.

        • Barbara McKinley

I cut out ALL milks and cereals and have not had that phlegm problem since. I use Pacific or McDougall organic boxed soup for breakfast with an egg occasionally. Yum!

  16. Mary Kay Rudeen

Hi Vivian, I have been taking the TrueOsteo calcium..wondering if the 64 mg of magnesium is really enough in this. The company says because it is plant based I do not need any more, but in reading your equation, this does not seem to be enough? Your thoughts please…thanks!

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Hi Mary Kay,

Like all supplements, True Osteo doesn’t contain all the Foundation Supplements. So you can easily make up for the low magnesium content by taking a multivitamin that contains magnesium, or a separate magnesium supplement. This will bring your magnesium intake up to desirable levels! 🙂

  17. jacline

goodmorning Vivian. I would like to known if your book save our bone program is traduction french merci jacline

  18. Sheila Darnell

Any recommendations on a suppliment with all the minerals and vitamins needed daily for building bones? I’m taking so many individual vitamins trying to get the amount recommended in your program. So far I haven’t found a daily vitamin that has it all in a daily dose!!! It’s frustrating carrying around so many different supplements! Any help would be appreciated. I love all your tips on bone health!

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

I understand, Sheila. It’s impossible to find 1 multivitamin that has it all, so what I like to do is add on to the multi with separate supplements, and then alternate days with calcium. For example, I take Vitamin Code Women’s 50+ formula on alternate days with a plant-based calcium supplement. I also take vitamin C with the multi.

Once you understand the role of vitamins and minerals, you can customize your own ideal supplement plan! 🙂

      • Mary Kay Rudee

Vivian, hate to be a pest and keep asking questions but got one more. I ordered the Vitamin Code Womens 50+ after reading this so want to verify…do you take the calcium pills every day and the multivitamin every other day?? Because I know the Vitamin Code Womens only has like 32 mg of calium in the total of 4 you have to take in a day?? Thanks..

Trudy, well said, I to am a fellow aussie and have trouble with the fluoride issue and how to avoid it. In my observations of friends, family, and the public in general their reactions to my objections on fluoride have been met with criticism. In general I am alone on this topic as most people have complete trust that fluoride is of great benefit to the health of their childrens teeth and also to their overall health. I strongly object to not having a choice, and see no reason why people wanting fluoride cannot have government supplied fluoride tablets, giving everyone the freedom to choose. Well done Vivian keep up the good work.

  20. Terry

Vivian, this was one of the most eye opening topics that you covered. I was amazed at how life changing it could be when you eliminate fluoride from your diet. Why would they continue to put so much of it in our water supply? I think about the last two years I was told to drink lots of water and how much damage I might have done. But I’m under construction with the Save Our Bones
Program now. Thank you so much!!

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

You are most welcome, Terry. I like how you refer to yourself as “under construction.” Aren’t we all! 😀

  21. Trudy

    Hi Vivian
Thanks again for your information re fluoride. In Australia the tap water/drinking water contains fluoride in most cities/councils as doctors of the highest ranking convince us that it is ‘healthy’and really good for your teeth, no damage to be expected whatsoever!!!
People/researchers of a different opinion are just ignored, called ‘ignorant’ and ‘scare mongers’. We have seen this kind of ‘knowing better’ over the decades, e.g. when smoking was considered ‘healthy’, asbestos ‘all right’for building, and the list goes on! Unfortunately, ‘normal’ citizens can’t do much to overrule these ‘smart’ doctors and dentists.
It is a shame that a small minority of supposedly very educated people dictates the general public what is ‘good’ for them.
When they finally learn the real truth about these toxins (hopefully they do one day!), it might be too late for us unless we educate ourselves and follow some good advice, e.g. yours!
Cheers from Australia and THANK YOU, Vivian!

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Trudy, your comment is very insightful! You make many good points, and it’s clear that you are not afraid to research to make your own health decisions. Good for you!
