5 Foods That Naturally Improve Your Balance - Save Our Bones

It doesn’t happen all that often. Even when there’s clear evidence that a natural compound works, most mainstream scientists typically end their studies saying that “more evidence is needed.”

So it is truly astonishing when a researcher and Assistant Professor of Pharmacology (it doesn't get more mainstream than that) calls a natural compound found in grapes, blueberries and other dark-skinned fruits, a “miracle molecule”.

Lead researcher Jane E. Cavanaugh, Ph.D, presented results of a brand new study this past summer at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. What new discovery prompted the researcher to use these unusual words?

A new study revealing that…

Resveratrol Helps Improve Motor Coordination and Balance

It’s already well established that resveratrol helps reduce inflammation, cholesterol, the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer. You’ve probably heard of the French paradox and the increase in red wine consumption as a result.

But until this study was published, resveratrol’s potent effect on motor coordination and balance was not known.

The scientists added whole blueberries to the diet of young and old laboratory mice for eight weeks and documented each mouse’s ability to cross a steel mesh balance beam. Already halfway through the study, the older mice showed marked improvements crossing the balance beam and were matching the younger mice’s motor coordination and balance.

The same study observed another benefit of resveratrol: less neural cell death. Through a still mysterious mechanism, resveratrol effectively protects neural cells from the ravages of the neurotransmitter dopamine as a result of stress.

Resveratrol is Best Absorbed from Foods

In fact, studies have shown that the bioavailability of supplementall trans-resveratrol is poor.1,2

And what about red wine? According to Cavanaugh, a 150 pound person would have to drink hundreds of glasses of red wine to get the beneficial effects she observed in the laboratory.

That’s obviously not an option, so stay sober and stick to resveratrol-rich foods such as red grapes, blueberries, bilberries, cranberries and peanuts.

Good Motor Coordination Reduces the Risk of Falls

Let’s face it. Falls are the number one culprit of fractures. In a study published by the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, more than half the study participants who fractured their hip did not have osteoporosis.3

So what does this mean to you? It means that whether you’ve been diagnosed with osteopenia, osteoporosis, or if you’re on a mission to prevent both, you must be aware of this simple truth. Clearly, preventing falls is paramount to keeping your bones intact.

HI VIVIAN, THANKS FOR THE INFO ABOUT GRAPEFRUIT. I KNOW IT’S GOOD FOR ME, BUT SINCE I HAVE KIDNEY DISEASE, I’M NOT ALLOWED TO EAT IT ANYMORE. SINCE I ALSO HAVE CELIAC DISEASE, I CAN’T EAT ANYTHING WITH WHEAT OR MSG. TERRIBLE, ISN’T IT.

    STILL LOVE CHOCOLATE.

  8. Joanna Molloy

In a talk given by a medical specialist and researcher I learnt that the healing property in grapes comes from the seeds. This is very frustrating when all we can buy is seedless grapes. Does this mean we don’t get resveratrol from them too?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Joanna, there is plenty of resveratrol in the grapes’ skin. 🙂 Grape seed extract can also be taken as a supplement if you’re interested in the benefits of grape seeds.

  9. iinda

All that I’ve read tells me you have great, useful information. Thank you!

For GERD, REFLUX: Sometimes one needs to work on the stomach’s pressure on the valve with the esophagus. One procedure: First thisg morning drink 2 cups water (any temperature) if you can. Stand with support if needed with feet hip distance apart. Raise up on your toes, then let yourself down quickly onto your heels. This quick drop lets the 2 cps of water pull the stomach down away from the esophagus. (Think about the amount eaten at a time all day and the size of the abdomen puching up on the stomach.)

  14. Mary

I have a question. There is a product called Silica Complex that comes in a liquid form or tablet. You add a few drops in your water, stir it around and drink it. Is this product healthy for the bones? Thank you.

  15. Lois Bateson

Vivian, In your book, SAVEOURBONES, I thought I read that blueberries were on the acidiic list. Am I wrong on this? Thanks, lb.

    • Shirley

You’re right. Blueberries areon tht acidic list but not to be avoided, just in proper balance with alkalizing foods. Enjoy them for their other good nourishment.

  16. toby z. liederman

have rec’d 2 replies to my comments saying ‘you’ve said this before’—-definitely not so about resveratrol….so something’s wrong with this comments option

  17. toby z. liederman

thank you for your information about resveratrol and the foods from which to best get its benefits…..

  18. toby z. liederman

as always, your suggestions are most helpful. thank you!

  19. romy

The bottom line is eat a variety of fruits, vegetables (Balanced diet)coupled with moderate exercise and positive outlook in life. All of us has a weak spot in our body which might cause disease because as the bible says we are born imperfect (because of inherited sin from Adam) but its good to know that Jehovah God wants us to be free from corruption. Romans 8:20-22 reads:”For the creation was subjected to futility, not by its own will but through him that subjected it, on the basis of hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from enslavement to corruption and have the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22 For we know that all creation keeps on groaning together and being in pain together until now.”

  20. Jane

Can I get the same benefit from a blueberry/grape smoothie? I love a commercial product that is sweetened only with natural fruit juices.

    Thanks.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Hi Jane,
Smoothies are a great way to enjoy the benefits of berries!

  21. MBMARX

I DID NOT RECEIVE 5 FOODS JUST BLUEBERRIES ANDRED GRAPES

    • Vincent J. Giliberto vincjg@rcn.com

I’ve been taking Marine D3 for quite some time. Should I switch to Resveritrol?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

I’m sorry you missed the 5 foods. I’m quoting here from the blog post:
“That’s obviously not an option, so stay sober and stick to resveratrol-rich foods such as red grapes, blueberries, bilberries, cranberries and peanuts.”

  22. Sharon

I eat blueberries almost every day; red grapes often; and lots of raisins. Since these are made from red grapes, I assume that raisins are resveratrol-rich, too?

    • sandy

      are raisens also resveratrol rick?

  23. connie

I read somewhere that seedless grapes are not beneficial like the seeded ones. Is there any truth in this?

  24. Shula

    Thank you so much, Vivian.

  27. Minna Greene

I am interested in your program.

  28. Christine Foulkes-Taylor

Are mulberries as effective as grapes/blueberries etc.?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Mulberries do contain significant levels of resveratrol, but not as much as red grapes or blueberries.

  29. Jacobine

Thank you for the save our bones program, it helps is so many ways!
    I am from the Netherlands, I am 67 years old/young 🙂

My question is: I have to take Proton pump inhibitors (Esomeprazol) . 80mg per day.
They may be associated with a greater risk of hip fractures as I understand. Now I suffer from
muscle weakness, muscle cramps, lethargy and fatigue.

Would it help to take Magnesium as a supplement?
What kind of magnesium should I look for?

I sincerely hope that you will help me, thank you so much in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Jacobine

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Hoi, Jacobine. PPIs contribute to malabsorption of many bone-healthy nutrients, plus they impair good digestion. Your best bet is to wean yourself off the PPI. Many in the community have done it while following the Osteoporosis Reversal Program. Unless you have a known medical reason to take it (other than acid reflux or GERD), try to slowly reduce the dosage and frequency and see what happens. And try to be really strict with the 80/20 balance while you do this. Let me know if it works for you 🙂

      • Betty

I tried weaning myself off 40mg PPI a day stretching it out over a longer period. Result was burning raw throat and hoarse voice. My abdominal sphincter muscle is weak and allows the acid up in to the esophagus. Before I went on med. I tried DGL and other natural suggestions. I know my bone loss has been affected by taking the PPI but I don’t know what else to try. So I am trying this program hoping that at least more absorption of Calcium will occur. I also started to take K2.

  30. Nu Ly

Afer I read your article, I add red grapes and blueberries for my diet,
usually I didn’t eat grapes. I do exercise everyday. Now, I do the Spine
Strengthener more often, I also do Qi-Gong, this exercise is for mind.
    Thank you.

  31. Barbara

I notice that you mention peanuts in the above article, but I understand there is an issue with aflatoxins. Would organic peanuts be affected by aflatoxins?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Barbara, aflatoxin is certainly a concern, so I don’t recommend eating peanuts often. Since aflatoxin is an end product of mold, it’s best to keep peanuts in the refrigerator. If you wish to roast them yourself, wash them in a Vitamin C solution (a little Vitamin C powder dissolved in water will do), then roast them, and store in the refrigerator.
