8 Early Warning Signs Your Kidneys Aren't Working As Well As They Should - Save Our Bones

As important as your kidneys are to your health (including your bone health), symptoms of their malfunction can be quite subtle. Yet early detection is crucial for preventing permanent kidney damage, so it’s vital to recognize the signs that something is not right with these detoxification organs.

In today’s post, you’ll learn about eight early warning signs that could mean your kidney function is not up to par, and what to do about it.

Let’s get started!

Kidney Function Declines With Age

It’s especially important to pay attention to your kidneys as you get older, because their function tends to decline in the later adult years (more on this later). In fact, and especially as it relates to your bone health, kidney function becomes even more crucial as we advance in years, because they are key players in the acid/alkaline balance in the body.

As Savers know, this balance is at the very heart of the Osteoporosis Reversal Program’s drug-free osteoporosis treatment. In addition to balancing the pH, the kidneys also filter out bone-damaging toxins and “decide” which vitamins and minerals need to be excreted or put back into circulation. Unfortunately, osteoporosis drugs have also been implicated in kidney damage, adding yet another compelling reason to avoid them.

As you can see, the kidneys are at the center of your bone health. So it’s vital to keep track of their function.

Are You Experiencing Any Of These Symptoms?

1. Swollen Feet, Ankles, Face, Or Other

Fluid retention is a definite sign that something is up with your body’s excretory system. One of the primary ways the kidneys keep your body balanced and deliver nutrients is by regulation of water. If these organs are not functioning well, fluid can accumulate in your tissues. Usually, you notice the swelling at your ankles, feet, face, or hands. Your legs might also swell.

2. Changes In Your Urine – Appearance, Frequency, Etc.

It makes sense to pay attention to urinary output, color and frequency when you’re taking note of your kidney function. After all, producing urine is one of the main things the kidneys do, so if you see any of the following changes, it might signal a kidney problem:

  • Urination is difficult.
  • You see blood in your urine.
  • Urination occurs less frequently, and when you do go, it appears very dark.
  • On the other hand, an increase in urine output and a lighter color can also indicate a problem (if it can’t be attributed to something obvious, such as drinking a lot of water).
  • Urine appears foamy or bubbly.
  • You wake during the night (sometimes more than once) with the urgent need to go.

3. Nausea And Vomiting

It’s understandable that you’d feel nauseated if your kidneys are letting “garbage” pile up in your system (the term for this phenomenon is “uremia”). Your body feels the need to expel the poisons, which can manifest as nausea and the feeling that you need to vomit. Sometimes, vomiting actually does occur.

4. Feeling Tired Or Sluggish During The Day

Everyone has a day when they feel tired – maybe you didn’t get enough sleep, or ate the wrong foods, or some other temporary factors are at play. But sometimes, fatigue is caused by lack of a hormone called erythropoietin, or EPO. The main function of EPO is to stimulate the production of red blood cells, and red blood cells carry energizing oxygen to cells throughout your body.

Stressed kidneys do not produce enough EPO, thereby reducing the number of red blood cells and making you feel weak and tired out.

5. Pain In Your Legs

If your kidneys are the cause of leg discomfort or pain, it’s usually located in the back of your legs. It can even migrate to your lower back, and can range from a feeling of muscle tightness to significant pain.

Kidney stones produce severe pain, usually in the back. Pain can also mean a kidney infection, which may be accompanied by a bladder infection as well. In some cases, the kidneys and liver might have cysts, which can be quite painful.

6. A Bad Taste In Your Mouth

If your kidneys are not removing toxins, they accumulate in your body (uremia). This can cause a metallic taste in your mouth, and produce bad breath. You might also find that food doesn’t taste the same, particularly meats. (This is interesting to note in light of the research we’re going to look at later, which connects a high-meat diet with kidney stress.) This dulls your appetite, which in turn can cause weight loss.

7. Itchy Rashes

When uric acid and waste products accumulate, the resulting buildup can cause itchy patches on your skin. Rashes are a vague symptom that can be caused by a number of factors; but those that result from kidney malfunction feel “deeper.” Topical treatment doesn’t help very much, because the itch feels like it extends below the skin’s surface. Uric acid-induced rashes can also manifest as little red bumps, not unlike acne.

8. Anemia

As I mentioned earlier, your kidneys produce red blood cell-stimulating EPO. Without enough EPO, you can’t make enough red blood cells, which can result in anemia. Anemia can manifest in a myriad of symptoms, including feeling winded and out of breath, feeling chilly even if your surroundings are warm, and dizziness. The reason for all of these symptoms is a systemic lack of oxygen (delivered by red blood cells).

What Causes Kidney Malfunction?

A major culprit of kidney problems is an acidic diet (consumed by the majority of the population). A brand-new study sheds light on the renal problems that can be caused by a high-acid, meat-rich diet.

The study followed 1,500 people with kidney disease for a period of 14 years. Participants who ate a diet high in meat came very close to experiencing complete kidney failure, while those who ate more fruits and vegetables did not even come close to kidney failure. Researchers estimate that an acidic diet can make it three times more likely for your kidneys to fail.1

Says lead study author Dr. Tanushree Banejee,

“Patients with chronic kidney disease may want to pay more attention to diet consumption of acid rich foods to reduce progression to kidney failure…dialysis treatments…may be avoided by adopting a more healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables.”1

Why Wait Until Your Kidneys Are Diseased?

While the study was conducted on people with kidney disease, we could safely extrapolate the recommendations to those who want to avoid kidney disease and achieve optimal kidney function now, especially as we age.

In fact, additional research points to the actuality of physiological changes in the kidneys as we age. The research notes that a progressive reduction of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal blood flow (RBF) are observed in conjunction with aging. The reason for these phenomena is a decrease in the plasma flow in the glomerulus, a bundle of capillaries that partially form the renal corpuscle.2

In addition, the aging kidneys experience other structural changes, such as a loss of renal mass, and decreased responsiveness to stimuli that constrict or dilate blood vessels. The study concludes with a notable summation:

“…age-related changes in cardiovascular hemodynamics, such as reduced cardiac output and systemic hypertension, are likely to play a role in reducing renal perfusion and filtration. Finally, it is hypothesized that increases in cellular oxidative stress that accompany aging result in endothelial cell dysfunction and changes in vasoactive mediators resulting in increased atherosclerosis, hypertension and glomerulosclerosis.”2

So Now Is The Time To “Pamper” Your Kidneys

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, you should see your health practitioner and have a check-up, including tests to assess your kidney function.

And you should also make sure you’re helping your kidneys stay in top shape by doing a thorough cleanse.

Even if you don’t have any of these signs, a systemic cleanse is like a spa day for your kidneys. It helps them get in top shape and avoid damage and disease. This is why the Osteoporosis Fresh Start Cleanse: The 7 Day Bone Building Accelerator was developed in conjunction with the Osteoporosis Reversal Program.

The Osteoporosis Fresh Start Cleanse is not just about alkalizing your body, feeling younger and more energized, and removing osteoporosis drugs from your system. It does all of these things in just seven days, but at the heart of the Osteoporosis Fresh Start Cleanse’s effectiveness are its kidney-boosting, liver-cleansing effects so you’ll strengthen and build your bones faster.

It’s always a good idea to heed early warning signs and treat your kidneys to a cleanse before damage occurs, and it’s particularly important to offset the effects of aging on your renal system.

For two weeks now my hands, wrists, feet, ankles have been swollen and I’ve had a lot of pain in my hands also now my lower back has really been hurting me where it’s hard to even stand up and down or squat. I’m tired all the time, just no motivation to do anything, bad mood, Felling irrated a lot. Also my urine has turned to almost like a neon yellow color but there is no smell or anything. I get up a lot to use the bathroom at night time. I should probably go see a Dr. Soon as possible right? After reading this article I’m almost positive that I’m having problems with my kidneys now and I’m really scared and nervous! I’m a Mother of 3 young children under the age of 10, and I’m only 33yrs old. I don’t know much about kidney disease or kidney failure. I just don’t want to die and leave my children behind and my husband. We also don’t have insurance until the 2nd of June. So I will have to go to the ER to be seen and I know that will probably be very expensive visit that we can’t afford. So I’m trying to hold off on going for as long as possible and I’m sure that is a risky move to make. What could happen if I would wait the two weeks until our insurance kicks in??? Plz respond quickly if possible!

  27. LOUISE A NEWELL

MY URINE SHOWS PROTIEN AND I HAVE SWELLING IN MY ANKLES. THE LEFT ONE IS MORE THAN RIGHT. I AM A DIBETICK . COULD THIS MEAN START OF KIDNEY PROBLEMS.

    • Bobbie

Liver is good does that mean kidney s good

  28. wendy stevnson

Hello Dr. Vivian, just curious if this kidney cleanse will be safe and effective for a liver that is being destroyed by hep c and has just been diagnosed with early stages of cirrosiss. FYI to ya all, my blood test results were much better after changing my diet to more fruits and vegatables. ie: beets, artichokes and lots of water. cutting out all fruit juices ( 28grams of sugar to 1 8oz glass), all fast food and quitting smoking. hope this helps. thanks Viv

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Hi Wendy,

While you will want to check with your doctor before proceeding, it sounds like a cleanse would be particularly beneficial in your situation.

  29. Shawn

Ok, whoever reads this. Back pains similar to the ones described in this article can be caused by other problems. Seems pretty convenient to lace an article with all sorts of symptoms and pain that can be attributed to other conditions along with a cleans/detoxification recipe. Ever heard of sciatica? How about peptic ulcers? Maybe compressed spine issues. Some of you may need to get medical help with your actual kidney problems but being ripped off by someone so they can profit off of your illness is really low for a human to do to another person in poor health!

    • Vera

I totally agree – nothing like scaring people to death

      • Elise

Yep – totally agree too! This page is a total rip off, as it is more often the case than not.

To everyone: please go seek a REAL doctor for a serious diagnosis and a credible treatment (not some sort of cleansing. This is NOT a medical cure) just a way to scare you and get your money!

I just had a few labs come back with indication of abnormal function. I also have some back left flank pain and pain in the left groin area. I have extreme thirst and drink about 16 oz of water throughout the night. I get up about 2-3 times to pee. I have been extremely fatigued for the last few weeks. The flank pain a week or so the groin pain a few months, thought I pulled something. I have just recently in the last week had the most terrible nights sleeps. Tossing, restless, etc. My doctor just started me on Cipro, 500 mg 2x daily for 5 days and I am having a CT scan on Monday as he said there were crystals in my urine and indications in the labs that the kidney were not functioning normally. Creatinine 1.18, GFR 49, BUN 17. I am a 48 white female. I get leg cramps and twitching from time to time, I have dry eyes which I treat with drops, for a few years now. I get muscle pain quite frequently, in my neck, and my legs always seem to hurt. I actually had them test me for Lupus, because my ANA came back positive and I was on the mild positive side of the quantitative panel. But the Rheumatologist said I was negative. Do you have any thoughts? Or advice?

Im 34 years old and for about 3 years now ive been experiencing chronic leg pain….amongst other issues. Mostly occur in winter months but not excluded to. This last year has been extremely rough with my health and my now ex phtsician often told me…”everythings nornal..” ive had swollen limbs one day n the next my wedding ring would fall off from my fingers being so thin. I had to quit working because 3 full days of work would have me laid up for at least 5. I began doing my own research and thought maybe autoimmune of some sort like fibromyalgia. Over the last few months ive noticed my urine very dark almost brown at times and a stronger odor than ever before. My leg pains are almost constant…unbearable bringing me to tears on a regular basis. I also have pain under my armpits and 3 mornings ago I woke up with what I thought was a pinched nerve in the middle of my back…after reading all of these signs n symptoms im fairly sure the problems are my kidneys.only issue is I have very little faith in the medical field where I live….major trust issues with pretty much being called a hypochondriac. I guess I need to search for a new doc quick or just go to the e.r.

I have pain and swelling on my left side and around to my back. Sometimes it shows thru my clothes. I am always fatigued and the pain wakes me at night. At first I thought it felt like when I had a bowel resection, but it is a different pain. I have a lot of medical problems (PAH, anemia, osteoporosis, RA, and lots more). I spend so much time at Dr’s and am very scared now with this new pain.

Hi, very helpful advice for keeping the kidneys well. It is really necessary to be aware of such kind of symptoms, but I have read an article which says that even junk food is harmful. Read: https://hiscry.com/avoid-junk-food-keep-kidneys-well/

    Hi Vivian

My name is Altin, I am 15. Thank you very much for this post it helped me find the reason why i feel tired everytime i do something. And if you know anything that can prevent this “fatigue” it would be really helpful.

  51. Tracy

Being a 49 year old mail, I found this article while searching for information specifically on EPO and kidney function, not bones. Regardless, this is the first article in my life that adequately describes a complex medical issue to the masses at a level directly between the medical professional and the person who simply wants to understand the issue and potentially take needed medical action. Excellent writing. Would that you had an article for every one of our medical concerns. Thanks.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Thank you, Tracy. It’s very important to us at the Save Institute to get the information to as many people as possible, accurately and clearly. 🙂 I am so glad you stopped by – keep gathering information and learning!

    Dear Vivian

When I am a vegan, can I use your OsteoCleanse or your recipe book ? I just don’t want to buy it if it require eating animal food.

    Best wishes
    Susanne

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Hi Susanne,
There are no animal products involved in OsteoCleanse, with the exception of Omega-3 fish oil supplements. But flax, chia, and hemp seeds are excellent vegan substitutes for the fish oil. 🙂

      • Susanne

        Wow Vivian.
It really isen’t a cleanse like many cleansing diets today where you’re have to fight your way through it big time because it’s really not delicious or just fluids all the way, and you have to remind yourself ” its healthy so I have to get through it”. I haven’t started yet but I just read the ebook and it sounds so great. Maybe because I have been eating like that for almost a year but then we “forgot” a little and went back to normal. So thanks so much, I can’t wait to get to it 🙂

        • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

You’re right, Susanne – OsteoCleanse is not a drastic, difficult cleanse; but it is very effective. I can’t wait to hear about your experience!

Watch for Warning Signs Many symptoms of kidney disease are ignored because they don’t seem serious. Keep an eye out for loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, swollen ankles or feet, and difficulty sleeping and concentrating.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Good point, Buford. The kidneys are, unfortunately, easily ignored.

  56. Nancy

Thank you Vivian, this information is very useful, I will certainly be watching out for signs as we eat quite a lot of red meat since we grow it.

I have just been reading your article on 8- early-warning-signs-your-Kidneys-aren’t-working-as-well-as-they-should. I found the article very interesting.

I am interested in finding out about the rash. I would like to know what type of blood test would indicate this. I have a rash and a couple of the other signs you mentioned on the article. I have had the rash for a couple of years now. I went to dermatologist and they gave me Kenalog. (not sure of the spelling). That was short lived as the rash came back.

I also have osteoporosis. I have had vertebroplasty .done on the 8th and 9th and also on the 1st and 12th. I DO NOT take any drugs for the osteoporosis.

Thanks for your save our bones articles. They are very helpful

thanks Vivian for the info on kidney. for me, none of the 8 signs yet but observes some of the signs on others (swollen feet, ankle etc) especially among women here. how can they be reach?

  62. Anne

Agree with everything you say about spotting the signs of kidney disease and seeking medical advice. Unfortunately you may know exactly what the problem is but here in the UK, the doctors in primary care will ignore anything you say and fob you off. I know this from my own experience, when after repeatedly highlighting my concerns, eventually I was admitted as an emergency having lost two thirds of my kidney function, and have now been left with chronic kidney disease. Still in the best of circumstances, it is good advice to be aware of the symptoms of kidney disease. Thanks for all your good advice.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

I am sorry you had that experience, Anne. It’s very frustrating to have a doctor ignore your concerns. No one knows your health and your body like you do!

Hello Vivian, thanks for all that great information. At present I’m taking Curcumin (turmeric); which is supposed to do a liver cleanse. I know you sell OsteoCleanse – how often is it required? I know it cleanses in 7 days, but how often is it required? Many Blessings – the exercises you give us to do are also so beneficial.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Hi Kelsey,
I like to do OsteoCleanse a couple of times a year. But you can do it as often as every other month if you like.

I cannot find any other way of corresponding with you. about this technical problem. I am having trouble with your security check saying that my address verification was unsuccessful. This is often because a website insists on a ‘region’ to be entered on the address (in my case the region is Gard) However the problem is that the Visa address does not contain the name of the region as it is in the postcode. Also may be accents cause a problem. No ….I have now tried without the accents. Please advise. Thanks Mary W
