Brush Like A Flamingo To Prevent Falls - Save Our Bones

Flamingos and bone health. What an unlikely combination, right? You may have wondered why these beautiful birds stand on one leg, and the surprising answer is that scientists are not exactly sure why.

Today, I’ll reveal why I stand on one foot, just like a flamingo. You see, not long ago I had the idea of using the two minutes it takes me to brush my teeth to improve my balance. So I decided to copy flamingos, and started standing on one foot while brushing in the morning. Before going to bed, I stand on the other foot.

It’s So Easy to Improve Your Balance!

I didn’t find it difficult – even at first – perhaps because I’ve trained my balance since childhood since I used to be an avid roller skater. But I’ve not only noticed that my balance has greatly improved, I also realize that each time it requires less concentration, becoming more like second-nature to stand without wobbling.

At first, make sure you’re able to hold on to a stable surface, in case you need a little extra help. The bathroom sink or the wall should work really well. Think how easy it is to improve your ability to avoid dangerous falls that could end up in fractures by simply doing this every day.

Ditch Fluoridated Toothpaste

And while you’re brushing and working on your balance, don’t forget to skip the fluoridated toothpaste – both for the sake of your bone health and for your overall health.

If you can’t find fluoride-free toothpaste in your local stores or prefer to not shop online, check out my refreshing bone-healthy homemade toothpaste. It’s a cinch to make!

Figuring Out Flamingos

Still curious about why flamingos stand on one foot only? The latest theory is that standing on one foot allows flamingos to better regulate their body temperature. Since flamingos spend most of their time in water, it pulls away the body heat very quickly – even the warm tropical waters.1 So now you know.

Keep smiling!

oooooh, you’re good. very, VERY smart move especially if you heaepnpd to pull dress up duty the morning of picture day. of course you’d have to replace the originals with the retouched photos before his mom saw them. but that’s where lovely folks at the Walgreens photo lab come in and get a chance to earn the stripes, buttons & tags on their lab tech vests!

Actually, fluoride isgnetion has no benefits. Topical fluoride does harden outer tooth enamel but doesn’t reduce tooth decay. It just hides it.Fluoridation remains in the water because of organized dentistry whose deep pockets filled with corporate cash from companies that profit from fluoride and tooth decay, influence our legislators more than the science which shows fluoridation is ineffective, harmful and a waste of money. Why would they do this? Despite 65 years of water fluoridation reaching 70% of Americans on public water supplies and virtually 100% from the food and beverage supply and despite 55 years of fluoridated toothpaste, tooth decay is a growing US epidemic flooding our emergency rooms with people in dental pain but no ability to get dental care.80% of dentists refuse Medicaid patients and 130 million Americans don’t have dental insurance. Dentists use fluoridation as an illusion they care about the low income people they won’t allow in their dental chairs. Dentists need to be mandated to treat everyone. Dentists hope fluoridation will replace those mandates. We know they love mandates because they are behind virtually every fluoridation mandate in the USWhen large groups of people confront their local legislators to stop fluoridation, it will stop. Our legislators fear not being re-elected more than they fear losing the money and support of organized dentistry.

I have been reading about eating prunes to preserve bone. Several references on line about this. What are your comments. I am following the save our bones program, but prunes are on the ” acid producing” list and to be eaten in the 20% range. Comments please.

I had a uterine sarcoma eight years ago. At the time I had osteoporosis but just barely. I was 62 years old. A year and a half following the treatment (radiation and chemo) my pubic bone fractured and it was dominoes after that – nine insufficiency fractures throughout my lumbar spine and pelvis. I had a vertebroplasty on the left side, I have lost three inches in height and have tried many treatments for pain including a hyperbaric chamber, physical therapy and am now taking piroxicam. I cannot tolerate opiates which is probably a good thing as I’d probably be addicted by now. My dexa showed very slight improvement last year. I am also taking evista and calcitonin salmon. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. thanks.

I am amazed that my right leg is stronger than my left… I never knew that until I
practiced the “flamingo” exercise… When I do it, I exercise my left leg longer to
get it stronger… Thank you Vivian… I appreciate all of your emails…

    Hi Vivian,
I am a firm believer in healthy nutrition to restore the balance
    and keep us well.
I have recently had heart issues and found a product that is actually
    putting the problem to bed.
I thought how hard it is for people with all kinds of problems to be
    able to keep “perfect nutrition”.
I would like to pass on a link that people may like to try, especially
if they are extremely ill. This may be what they could use.
It’s not cheap, but if it’s as good as my heart treatment, then it’s worth
    doing, especially if you’re desperate:

I also stand like a flamingo while in a grocery store line or working at my kitchen counter. I will add this stance while brushing my teeth as well.

Thanks for all your tips, Vivian. Keep them coming!

Thank you Vivian for helping all of us do the natural things in our lives and avoiding
much medication. I think standing like a flamingo is fun…
Unfortunately I have high blood pressure and take medicine for it (family thing), but my bones are good. Am
81 years old and my bones do not ache…
    Thank you Vivian, sweet child…
    Blessings… Elizabeth w.

Wunderbar! I already use Tom’s of Maine toothpaste that has no fluoride in it. Even though the state has a fairly recent law that forbids the use of fluoride in the dental office, there are still some dentists who retain the bad habit and one has to be on the lookout for them and avoid them.

Another dental poison is the mercury in the old amalgam fillings. I tried to get a dentist replace that several years ago and he refused. It was “safe.”
I left to avoid a showdown.

You are super, Vivian. To borrow a passage from the Bible, “I love you!”

    • Faye

There is carrageenan in Tom’s toothpaste I use to use it but now I get spry toothpaste it is great !!!!

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Thanks for your kind words! (And I hope you did have those amalgams replaced…) Love to you and to all in the community!

I am 50 years old and was first diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was 46 years old. I began menopause at 39 (that I know of). I was put on Boniva, which I took for almost 2 years apprehensively. I did everything the way I was supposed to. Sally and I were best friends.:( I began having side effects of this drug and decided it was time to go off. I had a bone scan in the middle of taking this medicine and my numbers were great. After I stopped taking the drug about 6 months I had another bone scan done and my levels dropped severely. I was terrified. I thought, here I am only 50 and my body is going to break into little pieces and I will die if I do not find something to help build my bones back. My doctor recommended more drugs. I went home and cried. She gave me samples of another brand until I decided if I wanted to take pills or have a shot. I didn’t touch the samples. I threw them away. I was so depressed. I didn’t know what to do. I am a vegetarian and eat right. I knew there had to be a way I could do this without drugs. that’s when I came across your program. Now of course I was skeptical at first, but the more research I did, the more information I received that I knew was correct. I have had many biology classes to know much of the material you were saying was true as well as the examples you have given from the effects of the drugs were right on spot. I had found other woman taking other name drugs other than boniva and found your descriptions of these side effects was all too correct. And with the forum you have here from real people, I knew this was the answer. I ordered your book and have been following the program for about 7 months now. Once in a while I slip up, but I do follow the program about 90% of the time. I have just had another bone scan and I am so HAPPY. My scores, while not by a large margin at all, have moved in a positive direction. I know it is very slight, but it has only been 7 months and I am so happy that they haven’t move to the negative that I had to share this news. It is the best news I have heard in a long time. I am going to be a first-time Grandma this June and I now know that I will be able to run and play with my grandchild and my bones aren’t going to crumble. I can’t thank you enough Vivian for a new chance in life. Anyone who has any doubts, please just follow this program -including Vivian’s articles on the water, toothpaste, proper calcium pills and vitamins, exercise and more. She really knows what she is talking about. I am living proof of this miracle. I am so looking forward to taking another scan in 6 months and getting more positive results. I even have the ladies at the health center monitoring my progress. Thank you Vivian for saving my life!!!!!
Just a real person with a real success story 🙂

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Thanks for sharing the great news with us, Darlene! And stay on the Program 🙂

      • Darlene

I wouldn’t think of living any other way. I was having mixed reviews on the Diamond Almond Milk (unsweetened original). Is this a good milk to drink? Is is Alkalizing?

  26. Valerie

Has anyone heard of taking Silica for health benefits? My daughter has read up on it and says it would be good for my bones, I have severe osteoporosis and following Vivian’s program as best as I can. Thanks for any comments. Val

Using many things to relate your subject, main idea-bones health. Vivian,
you are so kind indeed. I try to remenber what you tought.Practice to
balance our bodies as Flaminggos birds in any chances. Peanut butter with
banan, nice tast.I hardly find toothpaste without fluorite.

In Australia, It seems no natural remedies doctor. thanks.

    • Rosemarie

Toothpaste without flouride is in your kitchen cabinet. It’s baking soda. Sprinkle it on your brush or make a paste. Rinse well and sparkling teeth. My Mother and I used this during WWII because toothpaste was sent to the military as were many other items.

  28. Virginia

I decided to use fluoride-free toothpaste about 6 months ago. I searched for it in Walmart and it was on the top shelf in their toothpaste section. It comes in a tube in a box with the name TOM’s Antiplaque & Whitening–Fluoride-free/natural on the outside. Sometimes they are out of it, but keep looking.and check out their other stores. It costs about $4.95 for a 5.5 oz. tube but it lasts for about 3 months. I got the peppermint flavor. Be sure it says fluoride-free as TOM’s sells other types of toothpaste. Good luck.

  29. Nancy

Once you get good at standing on one foot, try closing your eyes. That makes it even harder and better for developing your balance.

  30. Loretta Greenough

    Hi
lately I'[ve been reading about Strongium. it’s supposed to help in bone building, I have Osteporosis. I’m no longer taking Boniva or any other recommended medicines. I am on your program. Please let me know your thoughts on this item.
    thanks, Loretta

  31. Sherry

Hello. I just recently downloaded the free information and found it very informative. I also have shared it with all my friends (men and woman alike). I plan to purchase the program as well. I have never been one to do the “prescription” drug thing, so when I was told in 2008 that I had the beginning stages of osteopenia, the doctor of course wrote a prescription for Boniva. Needless to say, I tore it up before I left the office . No disrespect to those who are on drugs of that type, but my choice is simply to not take them. At that time I sought out alternatives and through a website came across Stronium. (Please forgive any mispelling’s in this message!). I took it off and on for about a total of 10 months. Around Feb. 2012 I began to have horrible joint pain in every part of my body. I have always had some trouble with arthritic knees since in my 20’s, but always worked through any minor pain. THIS pain however was terrible. It radiated in every single joint, making me totally fatigued to the point of going to work, coming home and going to bed. In reading through your free material, I found your comments on Stronium and how a side effect could be joint pain. I was furious! The information I received on this product (Ultimate Bone Support) never indicated that this could happen. Long story short, my supply went in the trash that day. I have only been off of it for about 2 weeks but already notice a slight difference. I don’t know how long it takes for something like this to get completely out of your system, but if anyone has any pointers, I would love to hear them. I am so grateful for having read the email from Vivian and plan on doing all of the techniques she teaches. On another note, the idea of not using fluoride in my toothpaste has always concerned me. Don’t we need it for our teeth?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

The benefits of fluoride on dental health is a highly controversial topic. There are other ways of caring for teeth, so there’s no need to use a toxic product.

      • LynnCS

My teeth are so sensitive without the prescription fluoride toothpaste. The dentist sited several studies and says he believes in it. I have a lot of exposed root. I’d like to keep my teeth, but want to keep my bones healthy too.

  32. Annabelle

Used to do it. Thanks for the reminder. It is so easy to forget these useful tips.

  33. Feona

I’ve been doing this during TV commercials, which also makes me stand up and move about more. Thanks for the link to your home recipe for toothpaste. Fluoride-free toothpaste is very hard to find!

  34. Isha

Tremendous idea, Vivian! I’ll try it out 🙂
