Saturday Night Live And Save Our Bones Partner Up - Save Our Bones

A Saturday Night Live writer may be part of the Save Our Bones community. Here’s why I’m saying this. I’ve always been a big fan of Saturday Night Live, especially the older seasons. I remember watching John Belushi and laughing until my throat hurt.

This past Saturday was no exception. I watched Saturday Night Live player, Abby Elliott, perform a skit strikingly similar to an article I wrote a few weeks before. It’s a brilliant and accurate spoof of Sally Field as a scaremonger for Big Pharma.

Watch the video here »

The Saturday Night Live spoof picks up on an increasingly obvious strategy applied by the makers of osteoporosis drugs. You see, the pharmaceutical giants unabashedly use scare tactics on women to convince them to take the osteoporosis drugs. They portray us as fragile beings that need to take synthetic drugs to prevent deadly fractures.

And here's the big question: if these drugs were to give good results without any terrible side-effects, wouldn't it be enough to have doctors prescribe them? Why do they need to spend millions to prey on their potential customers using scare tactics?

The answer is quite simple: as I've reported numerous times on this website and in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, these drugs can actually do more harm than good.

But fortunately, the osteoporosis world is changing. And you can see it in the media. As time goes by, it's becoming increasingly difficult for the mainstream medical establishment to sweep the truth about osteoporosis under the rug.

Indeed, these are exciting times for us because we are witnessing – albeit at a slow pace – how it is impossible to repress the truth. I'll have more for you soon on how the media is slowly beginning to catch up to us in the Save Our Bones Community.

I am a 56 year old women with recent Dexascan results of -2.3 to 3.1 T-scores of the hip and -3.4-3.7 T-scores of the spine. I developed osteonecrosis of the right hip due to preganancy at 40 years old which resulted in a hip replacement. It is essential that I have strong bones to prevent loosening of my hip replacement. What is your opinion of calcitonin-salmin?

I am 53 and so scared, now I am joining a gym to do intense resistence training, My daughter who has her BN RN OHN in nursing says I should not not not give up the fosomax but I have been reading your information and I am so afraid of what fosomax could be doing to my bone density.. I would love to have your program but do not shop online, is there any other way I could purchase this program to be able to take it to my trainer, DR. and my family Dr.

What foods are more alkaline. I am bothered with acid and am trying to eat more alkaline foods but it is difficult. From what I gather milk, meat and many ordinary foods are acidic. It is almost impossible to avoid acidic foods.thanks

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Hi Alice,

There’s a wide variety of alkalizing foods, and I list many of them in The Osteoporosis Reversal Program. You can also find a lot of information by reading the blog posts on this site, especially the articles in the Nutrition section. 🙂

Finally someone is actually doing something about this continous boring advertisement. Sally has a series going. I suppose this is the time to make a ton of extra money while her name is in the limelight.
Her voice just doesn’t match her glorious so called miracle.
Am so glad someone finally is fighting back.
Thank you for your wonderful information on osteoporois.

I want to replinish my bone density with diet and exercise. Which by the way I thought I was doing all along. Walking everyday, no alcohol, smoking. good diet. My question is “Is that enough to make a difference in bone density? What I really want to know is Over the course of say a year how much bone density can I expect to recoup? My fear is that my bones will continue to be weak and crumble and I’ll colapes. Is my fear warranted. This is the first notice I received about my bones. It’s not osteopenia it’s Osteoporosis. How did that happen without me knowing anything?

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Hi Joyce,

While it’s impossible to say with certainty what will happen in any individual case, I can tell you that many, many people (myself included) have regained our bone health through the Osteoporosis Reversal Program.

As far as how it happened without you knowing, unfortunately, loss of bone density often occurs without noticeable symptoms.

  11. Dot Rason

I have received your book and have been to the Dr who absolutely endorses your diet but thinks it is too late for me to correct the condition of my bones without drugs.
After being on Actinel 3 years I am determined not to take any more. I stopped taking them August 1st and now see the damage they were doing, I feel alive. I thought I was suffering from old age with joint pains, headaches, memory loss, heart burn, blurry eyes; now I feel 28 not 68,
Since April I have followed a low carb/high protein diet and lost 48lbs but realise this was at the cost of my bones. My Dr is concerned that the diet change will be too late but this year I have changed my lifestyle with exercise and walking around 10000 steps per day so please assure me that I am not too late to repair my crumbly spine.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Hi Dot,

It’s NEVER too late! You can definitely make positive gains in bone health by following the Osteoporosis Reversal Program. Because you were on Actonel for quite a long time, you might want to look into my 7 Day Rapid Cleanse, which is designed as a “jumpstart” to clear the osteoporosis drugs from your system.

  12. Trish Lewis

Thanks Vivian for all your research and I have just received your book. I am also keen to receive Ph cookbook if your complete same. Reading all the stories about effects of fosomax etc I feel lucky now that in Australia they will not prescribe these drugs until you have had a fracture due to costs. You can pay full amount but goverment will not contribute to cost. This appears to have been lucky for me reading all the bad effects.

  13. Donna Nicolls

What do you think about the new drug Prolio that has just been approved by the FDA in the US?

  14. lilibeth

I was diagnosed with osteoarthtritis. I’m presently suffering from pain.I had a shot of cortisone and taking methotrexate at the moment it helped a bit but still in pain. The Bone Dr. said that this has no cure. The affected part of my body is my left knee and my right is starting again. This affected me so much because I`ve been off from work for 2 months already.I`m forcing myself to stay strong because I can`t afford not to go back to work or no income because I have family to support and mortgage to pay. WHAT IS THE BEST MEDICINE FOR THIS HEALTH PROBLEM.please help me. lilibeth

Had my conference with Vivian today and she answered my long list of questions and was so helpful and easy to visit with. If you haven’t had your conference with Vivian yet get your questions written down and do it.
Thankfully I found Save Your Bones info on internet and started the program. When I went back to my doctor and said I wanted a yr. to turn my bones around naturally and not do the Reclast treatment I was scheduled for as from what I read it’s not good, my doctor said “YOU READ TOO MUCH”! She gets exasperated with me as I question everything concerning my health as everyone should.
Thanks Vivian for all your research and information and I’m looking forward to your PH Cook Book.

  17. Helen Loughlin

i value your perspective – it made me refuse IV treatment for osteo – apparently which would last a year – my logic told me if i have an adverse reaction i am stuck with this for a year!! i’m not stupid – so i said no way –
i also have fought the ;pharmas on the price of the drugs i have to take – first it was arimidex got so i could not afford it and now femara – guess what when they up the price to $500 they can say goodbye to me – i am not in the business of supporting pharmaceutical companies – i ask a lot of questions – and thanks for your counsel – Helen

Fosamax (just one of the bisphosphonate drugs…others are Boniva, Actonel and Reclast) are killers. I say that because I suffered two complete fractures of the femur and a broken vertebrae in less than four months. I took Fosamax for 10 years. I have been left in horrible pain, debilitating inabilities and my life will never be the same. I may as well have been run over by a truck.

I am part of an online support group with 50 members who also have suffered these fractures. Dr. Jennifer Schneider founded the group four years ago and on May 24 part of our group is meeting with the FDA administrators and other division heads to show them in person and with presentations exactly what the dangers of these drugs are. I am proud to be a part of this group of women and one man who are trying to make a difference–one broken bone at a time.

    • Verna

Good for you people. I wish you luck but money rules when it comes to drugs. I refused to take Fosamax and am glad I did. For years I have wondered how this drug and others like it could be used by unsuspecting people who never researched how bad these drugs are.

  19. Carol

I saw that on SNL and thought of you! Wasn’t that brilliant?!!

  20. Jean

Thanks for putting “Sally” on your website – I rarely watch TV, so would have missed it. Humor gets my attention, too. But I’m hoping to get enough votes to get an answer: I called in an order for “scratch&dent” sale, gave my charge card info and was told to c/b if I didn’t get an email acknowledgment of my order, which, 3 days later, I didn’t get. I called back, and was told if I ordered again, it would likely duplicate my order so I didn’t. I don’t usually give my card info in the first place. Will it be safe just to mail a check? I don’t want to miss out on this offer; how can I know if my order was entered?

what do you know about Forteo?

    • Pati

This high costing Forteo injection is another bad osteoporosis drug. Research it please! I was on it for 4 months. I also have had hypothyroidism for 25 years and I take Armour thyroid daily. Forteo started making me feel tired, run down, achy legs, within 2 1/2 months. I had blood tests done 3 times to see if it was my thyroid. The thyroid levels dropped dramitically, as did my D3 levels. The doc increased my thyroid & D dosage’s but did not suggest it was from Forteo. I became increasingly fatigued to the point where I couldn’t keep my eyes open driving. Took myself off of Forteo and the symptoms went away in 2 days!!! It has taken me a year to recoup and get my thyroid and D levels where they belong. Forteo is a synthetic parathyroid hormone. My question to the doc was why wasn’t my PTH (parathyroid hormone) checked before I went on Forteo? They didn’t have an answer and in fact they acted like they didn’t even know anything about the drug! I went to a specialist to have my PTH test done and it was okay and he was glad I had taken myself off the drug although he was all for putting me back on it!! Trust your instincts, do your research, and do what Vivian tells you…it works! I am following the PH diet and I am now taking Ezorb calcium. I am anxious to see my next bone scan results in October and also anxious to get Vivians PH cookbook when it’s available!

    • Vicki Steensma

It has a black-box warning for bone cancer. I personally have not taken it because if the bisphosphonates turned my bones to chalk and they stay in your bones for AT LEAST 10 years, why would I want to subject my bones to perhaps cancer. It is a personal choice, but for me I am too scared.

  22. Janet Cruz

My doctors have been trying to prescribe osteoporosis drugs to me for years. Every time I tell them no I won’t take a certain drug they come up with a new and improved one. It started out with Fosomax then Boniva, then the one where you take only once a year. Because I keep refusing my doctor wanted to send me to a “specialist” to convince me to take drugs for my osteoporosis. She told me that if I don’t I’m gonna be hunched-backed and bent forward when I get older maybe even have to be confined to a wheel chair. It really did scare me but I’m still not taking those drugs. I’m 55 years old and am an 8 year breast cancer survivor. I’m thinking that maybe the chemo drugs helped me get osteoporosis. Can that be?

    • Vicki Steensma

Please see the answer below, as it might help with your situation.

  23. Barbara Nemeth

Following surgery for breast cancer I will be prescribed Tamoxifen or Evista which also deal with osteoporosis. Apparently people who take the osteoporosis drugs are statistically less likely to get breast cancer, although the exact reason is not known. I am confused.

    • Vicki Steensma

I think you have to do some research and maybe hook up with other women who have had cancer and therefore are going to be subjected to bone-loss drugs. The drugs they are pushing DOES NOT PREVENT osteoporosis and should never be prescribed for such measures. I am blessed enough–at this point–to not have to deal with cancer, so I cannot say how the chemo or radiation treatments hurt the bones. I take 1200+ units calcium and at least 1,000 unites Vitamin D. There are blood tests available to show where your body stands on the absorption and content of these elements. It would be wise to ask for these tests. It is also wise to know that the bone density test was developed by the drug maker and that makes me worried about anything it concludes about my bones’ status. But please do some research and talk with your doctors and come to your own best conclusion on how to proceed with your care. Blessings… Vicki

      • Verna

So if the bone density test was developed by the drug companies, where can we get our bones tested by someone that is not in the business of making money from us?

        • Vicki Steensma

Honestly, the DEXA scan is probably the only source. EVERYONE looses bone density, just like EVERYONE gets a wrinkle. But not EVERYONE proceeds to develop osteoporosis!!! Therein lies the problem. Still get a DEXA scan, but never take an of the drugs as a preventive measure. That is where the problem begins. They will ultimately destroy your bones.
