  2. Liliana

    Hi Vivian,
I’ve been just diagnose with osteoporosis in my spine, I’m 46. Yes, scary isn’t? I don’t want any drugs! Even thinking about anytime I can have a fracture. I’ve read about the alkaline food but my concern is loosing weight. I’m very thing. I started one and I lost weight! I’m still eating healthy. Looking to your recipes I feel I releive because you have more fruits, protein varieties than the others. I bought your program, I can’t wait to get it. And I definetly get the cookbook. Thanks you very much. (from Australia)hope to hear from you soon.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Liliana, congratulations on taking charge of your own bone health! If you have concerns about losing weight on the Program, you can adjust to a 70/30 balance instead for a while, or swap out higher-calorie acidifying foods (beef rather than turkey, for instance). 🙂 Good luck!

  3. Shirley Carini

On Monday, Jan. 6th It was so cold, threw my coat over my shoulders to get my mail from the front porch. I closed the mail box and in trying to turn around lost my balance. In trying to regain balance I took some backward steps and ended up having a sit down fall. Ouch! My back is still sore, but no broken bones. I’ve been taking the calcium you recommended. Also doing balance exercises. And from now on, I will never go even a short distance without my cane.

  4. Jo

Dear Vivian; I have an unusual problem and I need your advice.
I am 76 yrs. old Asian woman, active and very healthy. I attend Yoga classes and also I am an instructor of yoga and T’aichi at Senior Centers.
Since my High School days,I have kept 105 pounds weight which, to me, is just right for me and I would like to keep this weight but have been losing weight very slowly (I know that some of this has to do with age…). My eating plan had always been close to your plan. When most people are trying to lose weight, here I am asking you to give me advise as to add more calories to my eating plan so that I can, at least, gain 3-5 pounds.
I know that I do not take in enough calories.
    Thank you, Jo

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Dear Jo,
Your exercise plan sounds excellent! Honestly, there’s such a wide variety of foods you can eat on the Osteoporosis Reversal Program (and no limit to the amount you can eat) that it should be easy to adjust for weight loss. One thing you can do is add more complex carbs that pack calories, such as bananas, grapes, alkalizing beans, green peas, sweet potatoes, potatoes with peel, etc. And you can increase the calories of the acidifying foods, such as eating beef instead of turkey.

What also helps is having multiple snacks throughout the day. 🙂 Don’t forget nuts like almonds! They are nutrient-dense and high in calories.

If you still aren’t happy with your weight, you could try a 70/30 alkaline/acid balance, so as to increase consumption of higher calorie, acidifying foods such as pasta, brown rice, whole grain bread, and so forth. 🙂

  7. Elef

Happy New Year Vivian and to all the Savers!! I follow your advises for my bones, but my Dexa scan continues to show that my bone mass decreases. I trust you and I try not to give much attention to this, I hope that I do the right thing as I feel well and have no problems as I am already 72 years old.
    Thank you for all.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

      Dear Elef,

Please don’t think that following the Program was for naught! 🙂 Remember, bone density is just one aspect of bone health. It is an indicator of bone metabolism, but the main focus of bone health is simply to prevent fractures, and less dense but healthy and renewed bones have better tensile strength than thicker, denser, older bones.

Also, please don’t forget that machines are not accurate, which means that your DEXA may not reflect a good comparison. The bottom line is that you’re not taking toxic (and often dangerous) drugs, and that you’re allowing your bones to remodel as they should. Bone health is not a density “pageant!” It’s all about not breaking bones, and so far, you’ve succeeded with flying colors!

  18. Janet

I don’t drink milk either but I do eat yoghurt. As a family we are unable to eat nuts or nut products due to a family member being nut/soya/lentil/pulses allergic and even our touching that person having consumed one of the above, can trigger a reaction. However, due to Vivian’s books/articles etc, we are able to manage to obtain the nutrients these foods contain, elsewhere. Don’t know how we would manage without such sound advice. Thank you Sooooooo much Vivian for making things manageable and understandable. Wishing A Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year to all the Save Our Bones Community.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Janet, I thank you so very much for your sentiments – and you’ve touched on something important: making things “manageable and understandable.” That’s what Save Our Bones is all about! 🙂

  19. Barbara

I don’t drink cow’s milk, but I do drink almond milk. Is that just as bad for you?

    • Catherine

Hi Barbara, excellent choice Almond milk is top of Vivian’s list for drinking as long as it dosen’t contain sugar, (if you need sugar use the plant sugar that Vivian has advised us to use.) I now also drink Almond milk found a few unsweetened tried some but I prefer alpro unsweetened, (also dosen’t have soya which is far down the list). Have a look at Vivian’s discussion ‘drinking cows milk’. This is such an amazing web site that Vivian has for us, I am so grateful for it there isn’t the space to write how I feel about it, so Many Many thanks to Vivian in keeping us well informed with what is going on. I pass all this info on to my sister in France and friends here in the UK. catherine

      • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Catherine, thank you so much for your kinds words! And Barbara, Catherine is right – I do recommend unsweetened almond milk. 🙂
