This month’s Bulletin brings you some remarkable new information about GMOs, medical error, and the bone health benefits of the agave plant.
The U.S. is waking up to the worldwide push to label genetically-modified foods, and one state is taking the lead on this important health issue.
Meanwhile, hundreds of deaths are occurring daily in hospitals, and amazingly, it’s not due to disease. And finally, breakthrough research points to the tequila agave as holding potential for reversal of bone loss.
So let’s take a look at the latest osteoporosis news, beginning with the topic of labeling GMOs.
1. Vermont Becomes First State To Require GMO Labeling
Genetically-modified organisms, or GMOs, have given rise to significant consumer concern for well over a decade. As a result, many states in the U.S. and countries around the world are requiring GM foods to be labeled. Not surprisingly, Big Agribusiness is fighting the practice, claiming that requiring labels will cause consumers to assume GMOs are unsafe. But there is more to the story than that…
“Vermont on Thursday became the first U.S. state to mandate labeling of foods made with genetically modified organisms as Governor Peter Shumlin signed a law that is widely expected to be challenged in court by some food and agriculture companies.
The law, set to take effect July 1, 2016, would for the first time align at least a small part of the United States with more than 60 other countries that require labeling of genetically engineered foods. And it sets the stage for more than two dozen other states that are currently considering mandatory labeling of such GMO foods. …
But the food and agriculture industries, including the makers of genetically modified corn, soybeans, canola and other crops widely used in packaged foods, are fighting mandatory labeling of GMOs. They say their products are proven safe, and that such labels will imply they are unsafe, confusing consumers and increasing costs for consumers as well as farmers and food companies.”1
Hopefully, other states will follow Vermont’s lead and embrace the labeling laws. Consumers have a right to know what they’re ingesting, and if Big Agribusiness is concerned that labeling implies a lack of safety, then that just reveals their fear that the truly harmful nature of GMOs will be uncovered. BA giants like Monsanto claim that there is no evidence that GMOs are unsafe…but as Savers already know, there is evidence.
For example, GM corn has been shown to cause liver and kidney damage in rats.2 This is not surprising, since it’s a fact that GM crops are designed to resist the herbicide glyphosate (RoundUp) so that more of this dangerous and harmful chemical can be sprayed on crops.
It’s a sad commentary on BA’s true goals (financial gain) when they are willing to allow millions of people to unknowingly ingest these foods as a sinister global genetic experiment.
Besides, there are many other reasons why consumers want to shun GMOs. There are grave environmental and ethical concerns with the practice of genetic modification that go beyond just trepidation about ingesting the foods themselves.
No thank you, Big Agribusiness. Savers and other health-conscious people do not want to be part of a genetic experiment!
2. Medical Errors Are The Third Leading Cause Of Death In The U.S.A.
A Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine research project, led by Professor Martin Makary, involved a comprehensive review of no fewer than four studies on this topic. The information led the research team to conclude that almost 700 deaths per day can be attributed to medical error.
“Their analysis, published in the BMJ on Tuesday, shows that ‘medical errors’ in hospitals and other health-care facilities are incredibly common and may now be the third-leading cause of death in the United States — claiming 251,000 lives every year, more than respiratory disease, accidents, stroke and Alzheimer’s.
Martin Makary, a professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who led the research, said in an interview that the category includes everything from bad doctors to more systemic issues such as communication breakdowns when patients are handed off from one department to another.
‘It boils down to people dying from the care that they receive rather than the disease for which they are seeking care,’ Makary said.”3
This information is not intended to scare you away from going to the doctor. It’s not meant to scare you at all. Rather, this research points to the importance of being hands-on in your healthcare, and being as informed as possible every step of the way, especially about those issues your doctor may know very little about, such as nutrition. It is more imperative than ever that all of us be actively involved in our own health care.

3. Tequila Agave Increases Absorption Of Calcium In Osteoporosis
When ovariectomized mice were given fructans from the tequila agave plant, researchers found an increase in calcium absorption and bone formation. This sounds like an exciting breakthrough in nutritional bone health, but once again, there’s more to the story.
“Dr. Mercedes López, leader of the project, states that ‘the consumption of fructans contained in the agave, in collaboration with adequate intestinal micriobiota, promotes the formation of new bone, even with the presence of osteoporosis.’
To reach this conclusion, the research team conducted various experiments with animal models. The procedure consisted of removing the ovaries from female mice in order to induce osteoporosis. The next step was to administer agave fructans and eight weeks later a femur sample was taken to measure the absorption of minerals and osteocalcin, protein that indicates the production of new bone.
‘It was found that mice that consumed this fructans synthesized nearly 50 percent more of such protein, in addition that the diameter of their bones was higher compared with the subjects which were not supplied with derivatives of the agave’ she reports.”4
This sounds like great news on the nutritional health front. But unfortunately, the new discovery is inspiring the creation of a patented pharmaceutical version of natural fructans to be added to osteoporosis drugs:
“Therefore, Lopez hopes to perform clinical studies to prove that fructans can be used as an adjuvant, for which she already applied for a patent on a national level.”4
An adjuvant is any pharmaceutical agent that’s added to a drug with the intention of affecting the drug’s performance – specifically, enhancing the action of the drug’s active component.
