A Day In The Life #5: The Bone-Healthy Pizza Alternative - Save Our Bones

I’ve always believed that a little creativity in the kitchen can go a long way. So I enjoy experimenting with ideas to help you eat balanced meals that nourish your bones. Sometimes, I surprise myself with the delicious results.

Here’s what happened last week. It was well past lunchtime, and my stomach was growling. I was craving something that I hadn’t eaten in a long time: pizza.

With the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, you know that practically no foods are out-of-bound, so long as you eat them in the right proportion. I usually keep organic pizza in my freezer, which I combine with a generous portion of organic mixed greens.

My Latest Culinary Adventure

Much to my dismay, there was no pizza. Instead, I caught a glimpse of miniature quiches, packed in a colorful box. I closed the freezer and opened the refrigerator, trying to figure out what else I could eat. When I slid open the vegetable bin, two zucchinis stood out among a bunch of carrots, a bag of organic spinach, and a few bright red tomatoes.

Suddenly, I had an idea. What if I made my own pizza? And better yet, what if the pizza would fit the 80/20 pH balance?

Inspired by the miniature quiches, I created the Pizzini, and enjoyed a delicious and satisfying lunch. Today, I’d like to share with you my brand new Pizzini recipe.

The Pizzini

2 Servings

Ingredients

2 zucchinis, cut in 2 inch segments
2 tomatoes, diced
1 cup spinach, chopped
1/4 cup cheese, shredded
1 tablespoon olive oil
Black pepper to taste
Tomato sauce (optional)

Directions

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F.

Scoop out each zucchini slice to make room for filling. Keep the center part for later use.

Drizzle the zucchini cups with olive oil and pepper, and roast for 20 minutes.

Heat remaining olive oil in skillet and sauté the tomatoes, spinach, and leftover zucchini centers.

When zucchini is done, fill the cups with the tomato mixture, sprinkle the cheese on top, and bake in the oven until the cheese melts.

Serve with tomato sauce if desired.

Enjoy!

Figurative Usage. The Bible in its references to bones highlights how vital they are literally to the physical health of the individual and figuratively to his spiritual health. The bones are the interior supporting framework of the body, and as such are used in the Bible metaphorically to represent one’s being, especially as affected by deep feelings and emotions. Thus, the bones of a fearful individual are said to be “filled with dread.” (Job 4:14) One’s bones can shake because of extreme dejection or be “hot from dryness” because of disease. (Jer 23:9; Job 30:30) The fear of Jehovah is ‘a refreshment to the bones.’ (Pr 3:8) A good report is said to ‘make the bones fat’ or fill them with marrow, that is, invigorate the whole body. (Pr 15:30) “Pleasant sayings are . . . a healing to the bones.” (Pr 16:24) On the other hand, negative emotions can have a harmful effect on one’s organism. “A spirit that is stricken makes the bones dry.” (Pr 17:22) A wife that acts shamefully is said to be to her husband “as rottenness in his bones.” (Pr 12:4) The harboring of jealousy toward others can also be destructive to a person physically and spiritually, and so “jealousy is rottenness to the bones.”—Pr 14:30.

Sorry to butt in again, but just saw the advice that distilled water is best. Dr. Eric Osanski writes that distilled water long term will leach out minerals. He recommends reverse osmosis instead. A close friend who is a veterinarian (they can prescribe for people, too) says the same thing.

He is an MD who has Graves hyperthyroid condition and has become a specialist in hyper- and hypo-thyroid natural endocrine treatments. His site and articles are free. http://www.NaturalEndocrine(something-something).
Like you, he answers emails personally. Maybe you two experts can confab.

    • Diane

Vivian could you please elaborate on the two comments regarding distilled water, I have been drinking it since your recommendation and now am worried about doing so.. Thanks for clearing this issue up.

  8. Gertrude "Trudy"

Works with eggplant, too. And salsa works with the otherwise bland flavors.

  9. Sharon

This sounds really good! Love zucchini — and this is just one more way to enjoy it. Thank you!

  10. Charlotte

This sounds delicious, can’t wait to try it!

Vivian, your Save the Bones information has made such a positive difference in my life. Please help again. I was recently diagnosed with celiac and feel eating wheat products contributed to my osteoporosis. I get conflicting answers on whether Celia’s can eat brown rice in any form. What is your position on this. I trust your opinion.

    • Sharon

      Brown rice is gluten-free. Enjoy!

  12. Nu Ly

I am struggling for eating alkaling foods, sometimes I don,t know what I’ll eat. Now I can follow your recipe thank you.

    Beate Zilversmidt,

I’m surprised your Dr. would put you on bisphosphonates , when most of them cause Cancer!
Besides bisphosphonates, just coats your bones, and does not let your bone shloff off old bones, to grow new bones.
It has now been proven after taking Fosamax for 5 years, it causes spiral fractures of the Femur bones. So how good is it for our bones? It is NOT.

Have you had your blood checked to see how your vitamins levels are?

You say your taking D, but I hope it is 5000iu of D3 or more if needed

K2 MK-4 is very important as it takes the calcium to your bones and NOT your Arteries..
You can find a liqued K2 MK4 ..K2 MK4 has a short shelve life in the body, about 5 hours..take twice or three times aday with food and a little healthy fat. start our with about 3 drops of k2-mk4 each time..

K1 does nothing for you..and K2 MK-7 you only need maybe 3 times a week. It has a long shelve life..If you take too much of MK7 you can get an irregular heart beats.
It seems Magnezium is more important then Calcium. Dairy is not a good source of calcium.
Prunes have Boron , Take about 7 a day..There are many more vitamins , but try to make a healthy green Organic smoothies everyday..

I like what Karen Hammer suggested also.

Vivian, I hope your can give her some good ideas in vitamins and food to eat!!!!

    Vivian,

I wanted to share this with you, because your program has made such a difference for me.

My husband & I have discovered a wonderful product that detoxifies and alkalizes. (I was all for trying it since it seemed so compatable with The “Osteoporosis Reversal Program”, which I’ve been following.) It is called “Earth’s Living Clay”. My husband was surprised when after only a week or so, he noticed significant relief from his arthritis. Of course, we’ve continued using it. It’s been about a month and a half now and he’s only had one minor flare-up since we started. The informaton from your program along with this wonderful clay has made him a believer in the importance of a more alkaline diet.

Thanks for all the encouragement, wonderful recipes and valuable information.

    This is question !

I do not take any biphosphonates since the last 9 years. I stopped after reading you…. I am practicing yoga and exercise otherwise.
A specialist is having me in for a bone density test, every year.
Last time, he said I am still good (without drug) and I am very careful about my diet.
    I am 66 years old.
Now, he wants me to have another bone density test. I start to be nervous about that. Too many ”radiation”, I believe.
What do you think about that ?

  17. Diane Martinson

Sounds good but I don’t understand the right way to cut the zucchini. Scooping out the 2″ circles would make sort of deep little cups, or are we cutting them lenghtwise and then scooping them out?

    Diane

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

You’re cutting the zucchini in two inch slices. You can use a melon baller to scoop out the zucchini.

  18. Elizabeth M. Wright

Beate… You are in my prayers…

  19. Liz

Hi could you tell me if drinking purified water..H2only…for example is really bad for my bones? Somebody told me that i should only drink mineral water from bottles as the purified is really not good for me! Unfortunately i’ve been drinking H2o for the last 20 years!!!! I live on the island of Gozo which is off Malta and we dont drink tap water as its gross!! Any idea’s about this?

    liz

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

As I wrote in the Missing Link, which is included in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program, the best water for your bones and for your health is distilled water, especially with a few drops of fresh lemon juice.

  20. Bernadette

Dear Vivian, is it true you need estrogen to build bones? I read that the only way to restore bone is estrogen. This is very upseting to me because im trying so hard eating right, exercing taking vitamins and to know nothing is going to build my bones except taking hormones.

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Not so, Bernadette. You can read how so many have reversed their osteoporosis and built their bones by clicking on the link below:

Your Pizzini recipe sounds so yum but if that’s what I had for lunch I’d starve !
I have to have protein, maybe chicken, plus something after, like
a ‘ cake ‘that I make with spelt and buckwheat flours, carob etc and blueberries. I’m 65, with a very good appetite ! To date my bone loss
appears to have slowed down, here’s hoping………

  22. Beate Zilversmidt

I am trying your advices in my struggle against breast cancer, which started spreading in my bones. Against the cancer I am already years taking hormone blockers. The oncologue prescribed now also bisphosphonates which I stopped after two weeks because of side effects (cramps all over and shiverings). I already was on a no sugar vegan diet. Now I take calcium complex and vitamin D, and exercise a lot. My impression is that it helps, judging from the fact that I had some pains, and they disappeared.

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR WHETHER YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH CASES OF BONELOSS AS A RESULT OF CANCER METASTASES

    • Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Dear Beate, my researched is centered on bone loss caused by osteoporosis. It sounds as though you’re on the right track. I and everyone in the Save Our Bones community wish you a complete recovery 🙂

    • Karen Hammer

If I were you, I would look into living foods, there are many books on the subject.
They have great results with cancer. Living Foods are also called Raw Vegan Food or raw food. They are basically fruits and vegetable, raw or uncooked, also they can be dehydrated at low temperature under 115, but basically its a lot of varieties of salads and vegetable, they can be made easy to digest in soup that are blended such as fruit smoothies green smoothies. All veggie soups, there are alot of cookbooks out there now. There are book by one of the pioneers, Ann Wigmore on wheatgrass, which is alkalizing and healthful and will help tackle many diseases. sprouting, look for books with her name, such as rebuild your body, the hippocrates diet. …. sprouting, I am a raw food chef and I love eating the fruits nuts, and seeds, vegetables and prepare wonderful dressing almost every day, eat my share of fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds and superfoods, algae and seaweeds which help w/ mineral loss. Gogi berry or wolfberry…. so many, check out my website, http://www.tasteofraw.net. I got into this in some ways cause my parents both had cancer. I wish you radiant health and healing,
      Karen Hammer
