Would you eat your favorite breakfast cereal if you knew that it contained Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT), a product also used in jet fuel and embalming fluid? Can you imagine grilling your low fat veggie burger if you found out that its main ingredient is Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)?
Watch out, because foods that are considered “healthy” and labeled as “natural” contain many harmful chemicals used as food preservatives and flavor enhancers – and these chemicals are often disguised under unrecognizable names.
Today, I’ll expose the hidden dangerous food additives that are lurking in so-called “healthy” foods, how you can easily spot them and the simple and delicious alternatives that won’t sabotage your bone and overall health.
Unhealthy processed foods greatly outnumber unadulterated healthy foods
In the last 100 years the food industry has advanced by leaps and bounds. Today, more than three quarters of supermarket shelves are stocked with packaged and processed foods. These boxed, canned, and frozen concoctions in most cases only require boiling or microwaving to become edible.
In total, there are more than 3,000 food chemicals purposely added to our food supply, yet avoiding them is a lot easier and more economical than you might think.
You probably already know this, but the rule of thumb is that the best foods to conquer osteoporosis and to stay healthy are unprocessed natural foods. That’s because man-made chemicals acidify your body pH which in turn accelerates bone loss.
Back to basics is best for your bone health
We can all agree that scientific progress is a good thing, especially when it comes to innovations that make our life easier and more enjoyable. But advances in the food industry are hindering our efforts to stay healthy because thousands of chemicals have entered the food supply.
At the beginning of the food processing revolution, which began soon after World War II, manufacturers did not bother to hide the newly added synthetically made food additives. After all, the perception was that as women joined the workforce, their available time for cooking would be greatly diminished, and that most everyone would quickly adopt the newly invented convenience foods. So like a tsunami thunderously ravaging the shoreline, the convenience food industry has flooded grocery stores with their processed products.
As a result, foods have become so industrially processed that in some cases they could be easily labeled as “edible food-like substances” – a synthetic man-made product – rather than actual nourishing food.
Adding insult to injury, many staple foods such as potatoes and corn – often used as basic ingredients in a host of products – have their genetic makeup purposely tampered with and may be dangerous to your health.
Convenience foods hurt more than help
Ample research on the evolutionary process of humans and their nutritional requirements point to the clear fact that while our nutrition has radically changed since Paleolithic times, our biology really hasn’t. But along came agriculture and later on the Industrial Revolution and with it, man-made chemicals made their way into our dining rooms.
Fortunately, as is the case with most deceptions, educated consumers are now seeking alternatives to these chemical laden products in turn forcing food producers to get creative… That is why more often than not, food chemicals are renamed with less “synthetic names” than their older original ones.
I want you to be aware of this very important health issue, so we’ll explore together the 12 most dangerous commonly used food additives that can sabotage both your bone health and your general health. One important comment here: remember that ingredients on product packaging are listed according to quantity; the ingredient making up the largest quantity is listed first, and so on.
So now…
Let’s analyze a “healthy” breakfast cereal
Antioxidants protect cells from oxidative damage and some of them are proven potent bone protectors as well. So isn’t it a great idea to have your morning breakfast cereal with healthy antioxidants? Not so fast… Let’s take a look at the ingredients of Kellogg’s® Smart Start® Strong Heart Antioxidants:
Rice, whole grain wheat, sugar, oat clusters, sugar, toasted oats [rolled oats, sugar, canola oil with tbhq and citric acid to preserve freshness, molasses, honey, bht for freshness, soy lecithin], wheat flakes, crisp rice [rice, sugar, malt, salt], corn syrup, polydextrose, honey, cinnamon, BHT [preservative], artificial vanilla flavor, high fructose corn syrup, salt, honey, malt flavoring, alpha tocopherol acetate [vitamin E], niacinamide, zinc oxide, reduced iron, sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), calcium pantothenate, Yellow #5, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), riboflavin (vitamin B2), thiamin hydrochloride (vitamin B1), BHT (preservative), vitamin A palmitate, folic acid, beta carotene (a source of vitamin A), vitamin B12 and vitamin D.
Worst offenders:
BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene): this common additive used to prevent oxidation in a wide variety of foods and cosmetics is listed by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) in 2005 as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” on the basis of experimental findings in animals. It is also used in jet fuels, rubber petroleum products, transformer oil and embalming fluid. As if this were not enough, the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) warns that BHT should not be allowed to enter the environment, can cause liver damage, and is harmful to aquatic organisms.
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): Loaded with “unbound” fructose and glucose molecules, studies have shown that the reactive carbonyl molecules can cause tissue damage that may lead to obesity, diabetes, and also heart disease. So much for this “Strong Heart Antioxidants” cereal recipe! HFCS is made from genetically modified corn and processed with genetically modified enzymes. To make matters worse, studies have recently revealed that nearly half of tested samples of HFCS contained mercury.
Canola Oil: Despite its widespread reputation as a “heart-healthy” oil, most canola oil on the market is highly refined, chemically processed, and derived from genetically modified rapeseed plants. It undergoes high-heat extraction and is often treated with solvents like hexane, which can generate harmful oxidation products. Canola oil is also high in omega-6 fatty acids, which, when consumed in excess, can promote chronic inflammation — a known contributor to bone loss. In addition, canola oil is frequently deodorized and bleached, further degrading its nutritional quality.
Yellow #5: Almost all colorants approved for use in food are derived from coal tar and may contain up tp 10ppm of lead and arsenic. Also, and not surprisingly, most coal tar colors could potentially cause cancer.
Healthy replacements
I love starting my day with an antioxidant-rich breakfast complete with natural granola and fresh fruits sprinkled with slivered almonds, flax, and pumpkin seeds for extra crunch. Try it with your favorite milk substitute, and if you have a sweet tooth, use a little honey. I’m quite sure you’ll love it too. There are also many tasty varieties of boxed cereals that truly contain all-natural ingredients – just read the label and avoid synthetic ingredients including the ones listed above.
Are you ready for lunch?
You know that you can never go wrong with a salad to start your lunch with, so you pick your favorite bone-healthy alkalizing vegetables and all you have to do is pour some delicious dressing. Add a few crispy nuts and seeds and voila! You’ve got yourself a healthy lunch. But your choice of salad dressing can ruin your intentions… Let’s take a look at one of the most popular salad dressings, Kraft’s Creamy Italian dressing:
Water, soybean oil, vinegar, sugar, salt, contains less than 2% of garlic*, xanthan gum, citric acid, propylene glycol alginate, onions*, polysorbate 60, spice, red bell peppers*, garlic, phosphoric acid, parsley*, vitamin E, natural flavor. *dried
Worst offenders:
Soybean oil: More than half of all soybeans crops grown in the US are genetically-modified (GMO) representing a meteoric rise since 1996, when only 7% were GMO soybeans. Genetically modified crops not only pose environmental dangers. There is a growing concern (and mounting scientific evidence) that genetic engineering of food plant seeds may have an unexpected and negative impact on human health.
Propylene glycol alginate (E405): this food thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier is derived from alginic acid esterified and combined with propylene glycol. Bear in mind that even though propylene glycol is used as a food additive, it has many industrial uses including automotive antifreezes and airport runway de-icers.
Polysorbate 60: short for polyoxyethylene-(20)- sorbitan monostearate this emulsifier is widely used in the food industry. Made of made of corn, palm oil and petroleum, this gooey mix can’t spoil, so it often replaces dairy products in baked goods and other liquid products.
Healthy replacements
While some commercially made salad dressings really may have natural ingredients (make sure you read the labels), try to stick to basics and use olive oil with lemon juice as often as possible. Olive oil, is in fact a fruit juice and contains long chain unsaturated fatty acids that alkalize your body’s pH. You can also make your own salad dressing at home using wholesome natural ingredients.
An afternoon snack to energize your day
A couple of hours after lunch, you might crave a little pick-me-up snack. A few pretzels might just hit the spot, right? But not so fast… Take a look at the list of ingredients in a bag of fat free Rold Gold® Pretzels, the number one brand in the US:
Worst offenders:
Enriched flour: these pretzels are made with enriched flour. But don’t let the attractive description mislead you: like most highly processed foods, enriched flour is devoid of nutrients and more often than not it is also bleached. Since the wheat germ and bran are removed from this type of flour, the body treats it as a refined starch.
But it doesn’t end here. The “enrichment” itself is made using toxic ingredients. For example, iron is added back into enriched flour. Unfortunately, food makers use a metallic form of iron that your body can barely absorb and should not be ingested. Watch the shocking video below:
Healthy Replacements
It has fortunately become quite easy to replace enriched flour with healthy alternatives, especially with whole wheat flour. But don’t forget that there are other options that can add variety to your meals such as rye, quinoa, millet, and brown rice flour and sprouted grain products.
I like to snack on alkalizing fruits, whether dried or fresh, and sometimes add a few nuts such as almonds or walnuts and some sesame seeds that are naturally high in calcium. Dried fruits mixed with nuts are easy to carry around so you can have a bone-healthy snack anytime of the day.
It’s time for dinner now
As the day is winding down, you are looking forward to a nutritious and substantial dinner. You might choose what you think is a healthier lower fat alternative to beef, such as the Morningstar Farms® Grillers® Vegan Veggie Burgers. Take a look at the ingredients:
Water, textured soy protein concentrate, corn oil, contains two percent or less of autolyzed yeast extract, vegetable gum, natural flavors from vegetable sources, maltodextrin, soy fiber, salt, carrageenan, potato starch, onion powder, caramel color, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, konjac flour, sunflower oil, sesame seed oil, soy sauce (water, soybeans, wheat, salt), concentrated onion juice, ascorbic acid, vinegar powder, citric acid, aspartic acid, modified corn starch, malic acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, lactic acid, wheat flour, soy lecithin.
Worst Offenders:
Textured soy protein concentrate, corn oil, carrageenan, maltodextrin, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, modified cornstarch — all of these are essentially different names to hide ingredients that either contain Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) or form MSG during processing. In addition, corn oil, a high-PUFA seed oil, is among the most oxidation-prone oils when heated and produces toxic aldehydes such as propanal and 4-oxo-alkanals.
It is very important for your bone health and your overall health that you avoid these acidifying chemicals and unstable oils that can cause a variety of undesirable side effects besides accelerating bone loss. MSG and its related products have been linked to skin rashes, nausea, migraine headaches, heart irregularities, and even seizures.
Healthy Replacements:
If you are following the Osteoporosis Reversal Program you know that you have a very wide choice of foods to create delicious and bone-smart meals. The Program reveals an easy to follow pH balanced nutrition plan among many other things, and the best part is that you are in complete control of the huge number of combinations possible from the alkalizing and acidifying lists.
While beef is acidifying, you can build your dinner around a beef hamburger instead of the chemical meat replacement example above. I recommend you combine it with bone-healthy alkalizing vegetables and other alkalizing foods to balance your dinner.
If you opt to not have meat, the good news is that many grocery stores carry all natural vegetable imitation meat patties – just make sure they don’t contain the aforementioned ingredients.
Your health is in your hands
As you can see, it is easy to make the healthy food choices that will bring back your bone health and your general health. I hope that after you read this article you will pay even more attention to the ingredient labels in the foods you buy. This may sound daunting, but it’s really a lot easier than it sounds.
Simply try to eat foods in the most unadulterated “original” format as often as possible. And here’s a shortcut: any food packaging that has a long list of ingredients with names that sound like they’re from a distant planet is not the kind of food you want to eat. For strong and healthy bones, try to cook your meals from scratch as often as possible and when you can’t, get foods with a short and easy to recognize list of ingredients.

I just finished reading your article titled: 12 dangerous ingredients and was disappointed that I could not watch the video after the paragrah that states: But it doesn’t end here. The “enrichment” itself is made using toxic ingredients. For example, iron is added back into enriched flour. Unfortunately, food makers use a metallic form of iron that your body can barely absorb and should not be ingested. Watch the shocking video below:

Thank you for all your help and information.
If you want to watch the video…go to YouTube.com in the search field type metal bits and it will bring up the video.
You can also view the video you are asking about on http://www.mercola.com A host of other great information there also.
You can go to mercola.com and search the articles, and videos.Good site.
I agree with your information, Vivian. I learned some time ago that the body doesn’t know what to do with non-food particles, the ones you mention in addition to pesticides. It is speculated that the body stores the foreign materials, especially agricultural sprays or systemics. Some additives and dyes are possibly eliminated, or stored as mentioned above. The stored chemicals are suspect to causing cancerous tumors over time.
It is a good policy to always eat organic and natural, or as much as possible.
Thank you,
Andrea
I knew this and tried to control the horrible corn starch in the thickening in the food for my husband, the high fructose corn syrup in the glucerna that caused yeast, MRSA, 100% systemic, pain, dirreah, aricept ulcers, and finally death. I fought and was abused and so was my husband and two hospital stays were 94,000 and 96,000 dollars and the nursing homes refused to comply and have no insurance and have no drs. who see the patients. The VA would not help and I watched his eyes as he suffered and died in fear. Yes, the cereals that Walmart are now producing under their brand name are nothing but dust, crackers smelled terrible when I opened them, the price is twice as high and the other brands are almost three dollars! The msg or petroleum products in nursing homes is constantly abundant, cold hot dogs and bun and nothing else for a meal. These experiences for my husband and for me have been horrible. Death by hospitals and nursing homes and abuse from DHS, verbal to me and nursing home attendants and one place served bread in the shape of an ice cream scoop and it was colored bright pink! He could no swallow this mess, dry toast that could not be chewed and all of this starch, sugar, salt, yeast, thickening (corn starch) and I called Nestles about this. Lucien Charles Cline died Nov. 4 at hospice where they withdrew all water, food and gave him morophine every three hours until his heart stopped. I watched all of this and I had Medical Power of Attorney and they said it did not apply.
I hope you’re back home and recovered from the nursing home. No one
should have to endure what you and your husband went through.I hope
you have more choice in your daily life and in foods that nourish
and sustain your body and spirit.
Thank you Vivian for every piece of information you share with us; I am really appreciate them.
I try to eat healthy as much as I can; my Ph is 8.0; sometimes I force myself to eat acidic foods to have a balance. The only cereal I eat is cheerios (original). I eat chicken once a week; others days I eat black beans, red beans,
lentils; I buy them dried, soak them overnite and it only take 12 minutes to cook in a pressure cooker.
My Regards,
Thank you so much for your research regarding milk and now on cereal and other food packaging contents, we will certainly will have our eyes open when shopping.
Blessings,
Lily
Hi,
In the book ‘The Bone Health Revolution’ mention is made about drinking water but not tap water. What kind of water would you recommend? Here in the UK tap water is rated as very healthy as it is well treated, whereas bottled waters of all kinds are suspect.
Many thanks.
VICTOR
wow, more bad news about whats in foods, the cereal thing with the metal, my goodness, unbelievable…..
the water thing is a question i have as well, i have been told reverse osmosis is the best, as it is filtered, 7 times they say, i also heard parasites are still in spring water, flouride in tap water is bad as well, and distilled water supposedly makes your arteries hard, ???? so what is the best water, i like the dasani reverse osmosis wth added minerals, when i need to get a bottle of water from the store, and for home i get the big bottles delivered of the reverse osmosis, oh and what about the britta with the tap water???, you hear so many things….. if you know more about this , please let us know, and thanks for all your info, its great, learning, as much as i can…..
Dr. Zoltan Rona on distilled water
For short-term detoxification purposes, the use of distilled water can be beneficial. Beyond this, any benefits of drinking distilled water are due to the placebo effect. For long term, regular drinking purposes, the scientific literature as well as my own clinical observations do not support its consumption.
Distilled water contains no minerals and actually drains your body of minerals. Without exception, those who drink distilled water exclusively, typically become deficient in calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper, zinc, iron and many other trace minerals within a year. This fact is evidenced by yearly testing done through blood, urine and hair mineral analyses.

Thank you Dr. Rona. I have used Aquasana filters on my kitchen faucet and shower for years, the kitchen was the beginning. This began a very long time ago when one of our dogs was diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease, I am a believer in holistic and homeopathic medicine for animals and humans, and one of my vet reference books mentioned that too much chlorine in the drinking water can bring on Cushing’s. That did it for me, no one here drinks or cooks with anything other than filtered water, and showers are the same.
Thank you for re-confirming what I have already figured out. I am a living MSG detector. Any amount of MSG will give me a 24 hour Migrane Headache with Asthma symptoms. I have been purposely avoiding MSG & Sulfites for a few years now and whenever I miss an ingrediant and get MSG in my system, the effects seem to be getting worse. The good thing is that I can time the duration of my symptoms down to the nearest hour (24 hour period of agony).
I just purchased unsweetened Almond Milk and I don’t like the taste at all. I have to work to get past the taste…that means lot of self talk. I do not want to purchase the almond vanilla sweet because of the sweeteners added in. Is there anything out there that I can purchase that is healthy but as a better taste? Kim Mack Ohio
try coconut milk. there is the vanilla, original and unsweetened milk. i prefer the unsweetened because i don’t like sweet milk. that milk is very nutrionists. i use this milk for cooking and baking. good luck.
My understanding is that coconut milk is slightly acidic and highly inflammatory. Use sparingly.
you can make cashew milk very simply by putting raw cashews and water in a blender. there are no other steps and nothing to cook or strain.
One day I got violently sick and had eaten really awful that day—a whole box of Special K between breakfast, lunch and dinner. I almost went to the hospital. That led me to suspect preservatives and was shocked when I found out about BHT. You are right on!!! I love and appreciate your important work!
Hello Vivian and thanks for your messages. The best way to live my opinion is discipline in all the levels. Eat fruit for breakfast and small portions, lunch example small portion of tune and natural juice, dinner ditox drink and long nice sleep hours. During the day drink water. Avoid chilli, fat foods, meats, acids and processed foods. Bless the Universe and my warm regards Margarita Rodriguez
Wow! I just purchased some soy burgers- trying to eat healthy. After reading your list of ingredients I will be returning them. Thanks for the great information on hidden ingredients.
Vivian
Tank you so much for this valuable information.
WE are what we eat. Thanks for the new information. Arlene
Yes, we are what we absorb. This would include the skin and the environment and not just the food we eat or the supplement we take.
Dear Vivian
I have to be on a gluten free diet as I’m a celiac. I was told that soy products were good
but after reading your e-mail, I’m confused.I do read food labels carefully.I would like to gain weight, only weigh 82 lbs.Thank you so much
for all of your advice.
Eleanor
It is important to read labels. But can they be trusted?
https://www.naturalnews.com/021929_food_ingredients_lists_ingredients_list.html
As a caring father of teenaged daughters, what should I advise them to eat (we are vegetarian), to use on their skin, to wear, to drive? Who can be trusted not to contaminate our food, our cosmetics, our water supplies and other basic necessities? Sadly, we live in a world where money and profit is God and we have neither the time nor the knowledge to avoid these dangerous ingredients. I often wish that there was a parallel universe for us to live apart from all this!
I’m astonished with this information. I just threw all my “healthy” cereals to the trash. I hope many people can learn about natural foods and its benefits to our bodies. Thank you so much for this valuable information.
Blessings,
Amarylis
I kicked the breakfast cereal habit years ago after I met an old Polish man who had plain yoghourt with honey for his breakfast. The concept opened new worlds outside my own culture. The only breakfast cereal I have now are organic rolled oats. There are a lot of options for dressing it up. Today I had it raw with rice milk, almond meal, pumpkin seeds and a chopped pear. And I have been known to have soup for breakfast.
I found the video horrifying just shows the lengths the food industries will go to to sell their wares. I once read a report in a newspaper about a cattle farmer in America feeding powdered concrete to his cattle with the comment ” They’ll eat anything!” Makes you wonder just what is it we ARE eating doesn’t it!
mary
Vivian, I am a Vegan and rely mostly on Textured soy protein concentrate to supplement my protein. If I cut out this soy protein what would you recommend?
Dear Vivian,
Can you put an “Enable links” option on your emails. I cannot open the video. The box shows no picture, just the small icon in the upper left corner.
I will toss out my Morningstar veggie Burgers.
Thank-you. What about dairy free Ice Creams?
Trader Joe’s soy ice cream lists Organic soy bean oil as the 6th ingredient and carrageenan as the final ingredient. Is the law still in effect that requires ingredients to be listed in order of amount? So, relatively speaking, can we eat some treats if the bad stuff is minimal?
I’m working on eliminating Flouride so I would love to have your “personal care” product suggestions in an email as I am unable to open that link on your website.
I am drinking distilled water now, buying Tom’s toothpaste, but can’t find a shower filter that isn’t expensive.
Finally, My urine ph differs from my saliva when checked at the same time. What does this mean? My Ph has always been acidic even though I am Blood Type A which is the type that produces low acid in the in the digestive system. There is also Blood(5%of the body) Ph. Gets confusing.
Thank-you.
I am not sure if it is a good idea to drink distilled water as it robs the minerals from the body.
Making it acidic???
Distilled water has an acidic pH (5.4) BUT it is negatively charged. Toxic acidic residue is positively charged. Since opposites attract, distilled water drags the toxins out of the body 🙂
Yes, I am aware of the detoxification role of distilled water.
BUT “Distilled water is hypotonic to the cells so it rapidly flows in to the cells. In fact if red blood cells are placed in distilled water they will quickly swell and burst from the influx of water. One of the biggest concerns of drinking distilled water is that the sudden influx of water in to the system due to the hypotonic state will disrupt the electrolyte balance. The greater the intake of water at one time the greater the risk of a severe imbalance.
Leaching of minerals from the bone or loss of vitamins due to drinking distilled water may not be obvious or obvious at first either.”
Comments welcome.
If a person has a healthy lifestyle and drinks distilled water day in day out, then he/she probably won’t have too much toxin. Eventually, there will be an imbalance???
I will not use distilled water for a long period if I do use it. But I don’t have any intention of drinking distilled water at all. One Naturopath Doctor says that she won’t even drink distilled water during detoxification period.
Hogwash! Pure water has a pH of 7. If the pH differs from 7, there are dissolved impurities. Furthermore, all water is electrically neutral, not positive or negative. (Just GOOGLE “ionized water” to see all the scams.)
Yes, ionized water is worth checking out.
I know of one healthcare professional who has bought an ionizer. In my opinion, much better than distilled water which to me can be a health hazard.
I should clarify that ionized water should be used properly to avoid adverse effects.
It’s always best to go with nature. Fresh organic VEGETABLE juice will be my first choice over any manipulated water to acquire alkalinity.
I need to elaborate. Distilled water may not be good for most healthy people. But people with kidney disease have to use it. These are my opinions and I do my best to look from many angles.
I may not have time to contribute to this web site after this newsletter.
Very interesting. For years I had Kellogs Extra Fiber Bran every morning. Then that went off the market. Now I have 1/4C General Mill Fiber One with 1/4C Almond Milk. I have a smoothie made up of 8 Al and @ AC Fruits. And I love 1/2 Red Grapefruit along with that. I love breakfast! Lunch & dinner is always 8 Al and @ AC veggies & fruits. And I try to drink 10 glassas of Distilled/Filtered Water. How about that?
Yes, thanks for this article. I always get a headache when I knowingly have MSG in foods. I will keep a watch for the other ingredients that are similar. I am very aware of food labels and have to read them for heart health. I appreciate all of the research that you make available to us.
Hi Vivian…
I look forward to receiving your e-mails and the suggestions they contain.
I’ve switched to “stevia” as a sweetener for my morning oatmeal (I also add fruit and almonds).
I don’t remember your mentioning stevia. What’s your take on that product?
Thanks.
Susan
Susan, I do recommend stevia since it’s a natural plant sweetener with no calories, representing a great replacement for the toxic artificial sweeteners. Honey is great also.
Wow! No wonder iron fortified cereals smell awful and hurt my stomach. Haven’t eaten any since being on the bone building diet (1+ years.)
I have made food from scratch most of my entire adulthood. My daughters DO NOT like processed foods because I spoiled them on home made foods. They were permitted only one prepared bag of snacks every two weeks when growing up.
They now make meals from scratch even though they’re college students. They eat dinner leftovers for breakfast and lunch. They cook lunch if there are no leftovers. People are amazed that they are thin compared to so many young people. It’s not that they don’t eat or eat only “rabbit food”. They don’t like very many prepared foods. They are healthy eaters.
The articles were very interesting and helpful. If we remember to read all lables.
I wonder what is the best multiple vitamin to take that does not have all chemicals. That will give you essential vitamins without poison,
Thanks, Barbara
I would stay away from supplements that have titanium dioxide, sorbitol, fructose ……
I prefer whole food supplements. Mind you some companies claim that their supplements are whole food when in fact they are not.
Some good products here:-

I need any thing that will save my bones at 73
Having a friend who worked in the chemical industry and who had seen work friends early demise decided to retire early. The imformation in Vivian’s article are what my has already told to me. I believed him but didn’t really want to believe him if that makes sense. For the food industry to knowingly poison us is criminal and unforgivable. That’s why I like Vivian’s website because she tells the truth, and the truth is very important.
You are a believer in the alkaline diet and somewhere you mentioned the book by Amy Joy Lamou – Building Bone Vitality. Are you also a believer in their statement that Calcium pills do not work? I would also like to hear your thoughts on Progesterone cream for helping bone health.
Sorry to see you spouting pseudoscience and fear tactics in the midst of some well-intentioned and generally positive and reasonable messages. BHT is an anti-oxidant, extensively studied, works exactly like Vitamin E, but is, if anything, more stable. MSG has less sodium per gram than salt, could not possibly represent more than 50% by weight of anything called a hamburger, and has never shown any advese effects in multiple, large, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical studies, even when individuals claiming sensitivity were specifically included. A lot of what Vivian says makes sense, but I get dismayed when seeing this kind of unscientific fear-mongering which just serves to make people afraid of their food. As a M.Sc., Ph.D. nutritional biochemist/neurobiologist with 30 years of experience in research and teaching and many peer-reviewed publications, I have an appropriate background to comment.
My comments are not really directed at Nancy. I have always believed in the following.
It is always good to have a different perspective. I don’t believe everything said by any professionals and I read scientific studies with a grain of salt.
https://www.naturalnews.com/023074_the_FDA_drug_trials_drugs.html
About Autism and vaccines, so do we believe Lancet then or now?
One controversy we can all relate to:
Raw foodists believe that raw foods have enzymes and eating cooked food (dead food) will tax the body of enzymes. However, TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and Macrobiotic folks believe just the opposite. According to one acupuncturist, “generally food should be slightly cooked in order to make it easier to digest.”
Which camp are you in and whom do you believe?
In my opinion, it is a jungle out there. My mantra – moderation, listen to your own body, you are what you absorbed, examine issues from as many perspectives as possible, use common sense ……

No fear tactics, Nancy… only truth. Studies confirm that MSG is an addictive product that actually damages the hypothalamus. It causes obesity, among other problems.

Thanks for your advice and unfo re certain products/chemicals in our food. I have alaways been aware although one has to draw a line somewhere ortherwise you cannot eat anything. Iron and metal in our foods were always present. The stomach gets immune to these things. Dont think too much about them or they will affect your health. I have never heard of anyone dying by eating scraps of metal in our cereals. My motto is “dont worry too much – just enjoy eating and you will be OK”. I never eat cereals anyway – just a piece of toast or maybe an egg or two for breakfast. Fish or meat or fowl for supper plus fruit and veg so I cannot go too wrong. If I were to examine every food I eat, I would starve. My friend is 87 yars old. She is agile and fit as a fiddle. She eats anything that is placed on her plate and enjoys it. She never bothers about any chemicals, too much fat or any rubbish that are added to our food. She laughs at people who do. She just enjoys eating and couldnt care a toss what is in her food. I envy her. Perhaps this worry about what we eat is all in our mind. Thank you nevertheless. Good to know other peoples opinions.
Great article, thanks for all of the info
Thanks Vivian
What about cooking in a cast iron skillett?? isn’t that safer than teflon coated pans????
Teflon is a hazard to your health because it is made with toxic fluoride.
Stainless steel cookware is a good alternative.
I just want to add that GOOD QUALITY stainless steel cookwares are preferred.
Use a magnet to test the cookware before buying as some may have more nickel than steel.
It appears that we can’t eat anything that we like anymore. If it tastes good”Don’t eat it!”
I beg to differ… natural foods are delicious. If you have a farmer’s market near your house, give it a try.
Vivian. I agree with a lot now what you say about the food easily available.
I also agree with Eva Baker & Lynne.
I decided about a year ago to attempt to eat healthy. In my search for healthy meals I kept finding suggested meals that I would not want to eat if prepared and served to me, let alone if I had to prepare them. After this I got to where I was eating very little and I was losing t weight& strength. (I am 5ft 2in and weigh 125 lbs and this is what I weighed at 20) I finally decided that I had not really done to bad for 77 years, I was reasonably healthy & decided use common sense & to stop worrying so much about what to eat and to go back to my “normal” way of eating, making those changes that I could live with.
I now feel more normal & have stopped losing weight
Thank you, Vivian!
I can’t buy anything without reading the label – you posted
some new and reminded us of some old very important information – how long will it take before we’re eating JUST FOOD?
Thank you!
Thanks for the wonderful article and again, keeping us all informed.
Thanks, I appreciate the list, I have been on the alert for some of the things mentioned but did not know about all of them.
Thanks for your article about veggie burgers, processed food ,etc.
Eye openner. Its good you are around to tell us
about all these things.
Thanks again.
Hello Vivian 🙂
Thank you once again for the informative email. We certainly eat all that is as healthy as can be, fresh fruits & veg etc. if I lift a product off the shelf as a “treat” for myself, my husband will lift it back out, read the label then will tell me that, “No! you can’t have that it’s not good for you”. So it gets put back on the shelf. We have been reading what’s on the label for years and it is very frightening what the manufacturers put into their products.
Thank you again, have a nice day.
Best wishes from Scotland
Marysia 🙂
Vivian,
Although I trust what you are saying because I have studied for myself the benefits of eating naturally, I am having a hard time getting my arms around ‘no milk’ concept. Perhaps you can enlighten us more? Growing up, I was blessed with parents and relatives who grew their own beef and had access to unprocessed cow milk, cheese and butter, which was wonderful (and we NEVER got sick from it)!Organic milk is now required to be processed the same as regular cow milk. Soy products, especially the drinks make my digestive system very fitful; digesting them is harder on me than milk. Rice milk tastes like flavored water. Any suggestions? I bake and cook from scratch, so I want the best ingredients available for my family. Most recipes call for milk, sour cream, cheese or other dairy. Can you help?
Give almond milk or the new coconut milk, both now available in the carton, a whirle 🙂
You may change your mind about coconut milk once you check the Inflammatory Factor from this site.
https://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3114/2
Coconut milk even home-made may be highly inflammatory which is bad for bones or general health.
Vannah, you can make home-made almond milk at home. I’ll post soon an instructional video showing an easy and delicious recipe to make at home.
Discovering your website has been so helpful! Your articles yield both new information and confirm what I have long believed to be true–such as today’s advice to select and eat foods in their most natural state as possible. I am working on incorporating your suggestions into my everyday life. This requires changes but I am hopeful that the effort will pay off in the long run.
I am especially grateful for the discussion of bisphosphonates in your manual. I can’t help but think that we will see a complete reversal about the safety and advisability of the use of these drugs in the future, and so many women will be left with irreversible conditions resulting from using the drugs. As scary as bone loss is, I hope to reverse my issues by addressing what I think lies at the root of the problem–the alkaline/acid balance. I’m expecting my doctor to recommend starting some type of prescribed osteoporosis drug soon and with your help I feel confident that other options are available and more advisable. Thank you.
Hello Ann,
It may be of interest to you and others that I have been on different biphosphonates for 10yrs and , monitoerd with DEXA scans every 2yrs, my bone density has always been shown to have gone down despite this treatment.
At last, last year my DEXA scan showed a slight increase – the difference – for twelve months I had been taking Algeacal and strontium boost that I get by post from America and every day I stand for 20mins on my’ Juvent 1000′ vibrating plate. The plate was developed for astronauts to maintain their bone density.
I shall be buying Vivian’s book. With her advise as well I am as confident as I can be that things will continue to improve.
Incidentally I have stopped taking my Acotenal biphosphonate!
All the best Helen
Dear Vivian:
Thanks a lot again for new information on 12 dangerous food additives to avoid. Unless it is pinpointed by someone like you, it is dif-
ficult to determine if those food ingredients
are dangerous and harmful. It makes us more se-
lective in buying foods that are more nutri-
tious and free of harmful substances.
Aloha and may God bless you everyday. Julie Hernandez
Thanks Vivian,
Natural is best. Back to basics I think.

Very worrying information about veggie products speaking as a vegetarian diagnosed with osteopenia. Thought that Morningstar products were healthy! Help! What do I eat then?
Fran, Go for products with only “fermented” soy in them like tempeh-wonderfully vegan too!
Try this, Fran:

this is a wonderful helpful and informative article–easy to read and understand, and logical. Thank you for this information.
Viv, Most interesting. The video was quite shocking, I shall carefully check the boxes that have the least additives. Thanks.
A lunch of salad with dressing and a few nuts would leave me starving. I find an alkaline diet impossible to follow for that reason. Great if you want to lose weight but i want to put it on…impossible on this diet.
Thank you for the very useful article about what is in readily available so-called foods.
I shall certainly keep the article.
BUT, please do not encourage people to eat meat – animals have suffered enough.
It is true that soya and soya products have been adulterated but there are other vegetarian ways of getting amino acids.
How can the products of cruelty and cynicism be healthy?
Inogen,
Eating meat has been for centuries the way to stay healthy. If God did not want us to eat meat, there would not have been any animals. Enjoy what you have been blessed with, eat naturally and do not worry so much. It will be okay!
Vannah,
Yes, eating meat is something that people do and have done for millennia. However, the way animals are treated in this age of “factory farms” is utterly inhumane. I love a good steak but find it hard to enjoy it knowing the suffering endured by the poor animal before it died.
Vannah,
You seem to be overlooking the fact that animals nowadays are kept in intensive factory conditions, shot full of antibiotics and growth hormones and fed on genetically modified maize and soya.
I don’t want to encourage people to eat meat… I know that there is tremendous suffering in factory farms. I only used it as an example for a better food replacement.
IMPORTANT: there are a few brands that make delicious and healthy veggie burgers without nasty chemicals, as is the case of Amy’s Kitchen brands.

It’s so gross what they add to foods in the supermarket! You need a list of all the things that are not “foods” and read all the packaging list and compare it with your list. Seems like a lot of work but it is worth it.
Hi Vivian, This is a very informative writing and hope that a lot of people will read this. I am taking for the pain Turmeric would you think it is bad too? This is all packed in India and Shrilanka.. I taste a difference from the normal shops and won’t help either that is why I buy in bulk straight from those countries.Could you let me know please?
Have send some articles to friends – hope they will ask your book too. Thanks again Vivian , Illya
Thanks Vivian for the information.
I cooked and grow my veggies. I stocked frozen veggies for winter, (blunched and keep them in bottle/jars).It is true that foods have dangerous additives so avoid processed foods. It is tough to buy healthy foods. Fishes have mercury, animals are feed with chemicals, fertilizers are full of chemicals too. Back to basic but my rule of thumb is:” Moderation”.
Illya, You can’t go wrong with a spice…as is turmeric 🙂
I am not so sure. One person’s food may be another’s poison.
In my opinion, if one has excessive liver heat, eating turmeric can be “lethal.”
Always listen to your body and not just what others say.
This is because turmeric is a warm herb.
When it comes to herbs, energetics should be considered. Don’t use them blindly but according to one’s constitution.
e.g. Blood-shot eyes may be a sign of excessive liver heat. Check with an herbalist before you use turmeric.
Think again. One can go wrong with garlic.
“Garlic supplements are often taken to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, which is important for heat patients. But at the same time, it can also increase the risk of bleeding among those taking warfarin.”

If you ask me, I prefer enzymatic therapy to turmeric for inflammation, joint pain etc. But if your body agrees with turmeric and your pain is relieved stick with turmeric which is cheaper.
Refer to my post re: herbal energetics.
I use Turmeric also as well as cinnamon. I buy my spices from Penzys . http://www.penzeys.com
They buy their spices from all the relevant countries. If you like, they will send you a catalogue
Florence.
Such great information – thank you so much Vivian! I am also concerned about vitamin supplement ingredients and am always wondering which brands to take – it is overwhelming to shop for them – what do you take?
More often than not, I prefer liquid vitamins.
Viv, sounds like you read Michael pollan’s book “Food Rules”!
Thank you, Vivian, for all the helpful information I always receive from you. I do appreciate all the healthy tips.
Regards,
Ursula
I didn’t read it, Rose, but heard of it. If you can, get your hands on Twinkie, Deconstructed by Steve Ettlinger.
