An 800 pound gorilla recommends investments; talking babies discuss online stock trading; a gecko works for a car insurance company; a duck wants you to buy disability coverage… What will they think of next?
How about a “retired” flying nun, Sally Field, touting the benefits of Boniva (ibandronate), the first once-a-month bisphosphonate? Take a look at one of the ads for Boniva below:
Partial Transcript
“I always thought that calcium, vitamin D, and exercise would be enough to keep my bones healthy. Boniva works with your body to help stop and reverse bone loss… I was able to stop and reverse my bone loss, and studies show that after one year on Boniva, nine out of 10 women did too. I’ve got this one body and this one life, so I wanted to stop my bone loss. Ask your doctor if Boniva is right for you.”
So I decided to create my own ad for Boniva… but with a big twist
You see, my Boniva ad actually tells the truth. So now, without further ado, here is my new and accurate Boniva advertisement starring Sally Field:
Sally Field is sitting on her patio couch wearing white jogging pants and a blue t-shirt, her legs curled up on the seat. On top of a small coffee table in front of her, there is a thick and dried-up tree branch and a thin twig. As Enya’s inspiring “Only If” plays softly in the background, she says:
“I always thought that osteoporosis was a disease, and when I was diagnosed with it, my doctor told me that ONLY once-a-month Boniva could reverse my bone loss. At first I believed my doctor, but soon after – fortunately before filling my prescription – I discovered that he was wrong. I read on the internet that osteoporosis is not a disease and that there is a natural and drug-free way to reverse it. I was surprised to learn that Boniva can actually do more harm than good…”
Now there is silence, except for the music crescendo, as Enya sings “If you really want to, you can hear me say; only if you want to will you find a way.” Sally sits up straight and crosses her legs. The music volume is lowered and Sally goes on:
“Taking Boniva makes your bones more prone to fracture, and here’s why this happens. Exactly like its main competitors, Fosamax, Actonel, and Reclast, Boniva works against natural bone metabolism.
You see, Boniva binds to the bone matrix and stops normal bone resorption by inhibiting bone cells known as osteoclasts. Bone resorption is a necessary process to have strong and healthy bones because osteoclasts remove old bone to make space for new healthy, and more resilient bone tissue to be deposited in its place.
As a result of taking Boniva, new bone formation is greatly depressed, and your bones become old and dried-up with long-term accumulation.”
Sally picks up the thick branch and holds it in front of her with outstretched arms
“If you really want to you can seize the day”, Enya sings… Sally smiles and cracks the branch in half and holds the broken pieces in her hands:
“Take a look at this old and dried-up branch and notice how easily I split it in half. That’s exactly what happens to your bones: because Boniva stops your bones from renewing themselves naturally, they look thicker but become brittle.
This detrimental process takes a couple of years, and that’s why scientific studies showing density improvement when taking Boniva focus mainly on short-term results. Even though bone volume does not increase, bone is more densely packed and looks denser. But this stops after a while.
Like you, I want to reverse osteoporosis, but I don’t want to get fooled by a synthetic drug that offers short-sighted help. And what’s more, unlike my doctor, I believe that bone quality is more important than quantity. After all, my goal is to prevent fractures…”
Sally places the broken branch on the table and takes the thin twig in her hands. She tries to crack it, but it is flexible and instead of breaking, it gracefully bends. She continues:
“Now watch how this thinner but young and healthy twig resists breakage. Of course, you want your bones to be like it. So next time your doctor recommends Boniva, feel free to ignore him like I did, and opt for a natural and drug-free way to strengthen your bones.”
The music stops.
Sally gets up and walks away
The screen becomes black and a large Poison warning sign appears with a disclosure that reads:
“Even though this drug has been approved by the appropriate government agency to treat, cure, and prevent osteoporosis, you are basically on your own. Neither the agency nor healthcare practitioners, the latter with very few exceptions, care if you will suffer side effects when taking Boniva. After all, it’s a numbers game.
Moreover, the agencies involved can ignore new research showing detrimental effects of this drug, and even if those are confirmed, may simply issue a warning. Also, you must remember that the makers of Boniva have a lot more money than you, by the billions, and can therefore successfully fight any lawsuit by hiring the best lawyers.”
This remains visible on the screen while a woman’s voice is heard saying:
“If you are looking for a short-term osteoporosis ‘quick-fix’ and still want to take a chance with Boniva, please note that you are risking the following side effects, many of which may be irreversible: nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhea, severe constipation, inflammation and ulceration of the esophagus, chest pain, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, skin rash, eye problems including vision loss and blurred vision, generalized pain of the muscles, joints, and/or bones, decreased mobility of joints, blood clotting disorders, anemia, dental problems, numbness, tight muscles in the face, seizures, irritability and unusual thoughts and behaviors, altered taste, atrial fibrillation, jaw pain, osteonecrosis of the jaw.
Additionally, as is the case with all bisphosphonate drugs, Boniva interferes with Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) production, an essential antioxidant that performs many important functions in the body. To find out more about how Boniva can ruin your life, please call the toll-free information line at 1-800-4NO-LIES.”
The screen fades to black.
Now that would be truthful advertising. As always, let me know what you think by leaving a comment below.

Thank you for your recent information on Boniva! I stopped taking this 15 months ago and told my Dr. I had. He did not tell me I was wrong and went along with my decision. I wear my leg/arm weights and am very pleased to have stopped this harmful medication.
Good article… just another confirmation for me…
While on a plane home, we sat next to a young surgeon who works on restoring faces that are damaged by accident and by osteoporosis drugs.. yes, the jaw bones warnings that are on the label of such drugs, a possible side effect… rotting of the jaw bone… (the have a fancy medical name for that… )
I asked the young doctor, “what do you think of the drugs like fosamax, actonel and all the others?”…
He very quickly, with little doubt or thought said… “THEY ARE F****ING TOXIC! I repair the damage that they do. And no one should take them unless you are into heavy chemo that leaches calcium at a faster rate then what the body can rebuild… that is the only reason they were even invented.. to prevent rapid loss of bone… Doctors do not know this and prescribe the stuff like candy.”
I had taken one dose of actonel and had a really bad reaction, bad enough for me to intuitively know what my body told me… not for me… and this young fellow was a blessing for me to hear and confirm what you, Vivian are telling all of us and what my body told me….
Keep on with this website and thanks!!!
ESTA’S MARCH 29TH STATEMENT HIT HOME FOR ME. I AM A 45 YEAR OLD WOMAN, WHO HAD A COMPLETE HYSTERECTOMY AT THE AGE OF 23. AFTER TAKING PREMARIN, HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPIES OF ALL TYPES, EVEN THE PATCH.
I STOPPED THE COLD TURKEY, AS THEY MADE ME NAUSEA, FATIGUED AND JUST PLAIN MISERABLE. NOW I HAVE FULL BLOWN OSTEOPOROSIS, FIRS WAS ON FOSOMAX, NOW ON ACTONEL ONCE A MONTH. AND IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS I HAVE HAD 2 OF MY BACK TEETH (MOLARS) JUST BREAK IN HALF, FOR NO REASON, I WASNT EVEN EATING ANYTHING. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT MY GUM LINES HAVE RECEADED AGGRESSIVELY. I WONDER IF THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTONEL/FOSOMAX?? ANY ANSWERS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Is there a way you can put a link in the comment that gets a reply from you Vivian? It is difficult to scroll through 50 posts of people asking questions and there being no response from you or not being able to find the response from you,Thank you.
There is a product on the market called elations. It is a drink. I’ve drank 12 small bottles and as I’ve read the comments from others I’m wondering if there is a connection to the bone drugs as I’ve had some problem isssues and will not drink any more. Vera
My experience with Didronel and Fosamax: I was prescribed Didronel respectively for 4 years and my bone density tests were escalating with each successive year. After starting research on the subject, I came accross Vivian’s site. This was a about 1 1/2 years ago. Since then I’ve been paying fairly close attention to my diet and and exercise. I’ve recently become a vegatarian and leaning toward a Vegan diet – this timely decision came after a friend recommended I google: “Earthlings” documentary video. I feel this well benefit my bones and body in general along with a kinder relationship to our earth.
At this stage I must confess that I’ve not had a bone density test for 3 years, but all-in-all I feel much stronger with much more energy. V.F.
Thankyou Vivian. My docdtor has perscribed many of the drugs mentioned in your book. The
last one was evista, plus he wanted me to do the reclast treatment as well.
My dentist will not work on any patients who take these drugs. This alerted me to the problems with this treatment, plus your book and e-mails as well. I refused the reclast and stopped taking the Evista and am studying your informaation and want to try this method. My sister is taking evista also and is leary of stopping. I would sure like to see something
more on the dangers of Evista. Arlene
The most helpful thing for Sally Fields to do for millions of her fellow beings is to come back on TV and tell the truth. She may not get any money for it, but I’m thinking she is a decent person and would perhaps be happy with knowing she did the right thing. Meanwhile, thank you, Vivian for all that you are doing for us!
Eva

My doctor is now pushing Reclast or Forteo, when I went for my last bone denisty test. According to him I have shrunk another half inch, according to the man who performed my bone density test I am still the same height(he says hs is correct and not to believe anyone else)! Whatever the case I am sticking to what I have been doing—eating healthier, taking great supplements and exercising with weights and walking as many days as I can or walking up and down stairs. At 55 I am too young, very busy with 4 children and much responsibility to take all these drugs and worry about the consequences. I intend to live my life to the fullest and be around for a very longgggggg time yet so no drugs for me! I am very thankful that when I was checking out my Docs’ suggested drugs(Forteo) a year ago that I came accross enough information from you and elsewhere to eliminate the fosamax right away, to start eating even better and exercising even more. Thank you Vivain for showing me the light!
Having been very sick from Acunel, Fosamax and a couple of others I have decided to stay with a sensible diet and calcium and Vitamin D. Don’t know if it’s helping but I haven’t collapsed yet so it must be doing something.
Ithink Boniva is like the “Flying Nun” – puts on a good show but is phoney!!!
I only wish that Sally could read your ad! It’s sad that she continues to shill for Boniva. I wonder if she has any idea of the truth or of what she’s doing?!
A living example of the dangers of bisphosphonates is my mother. Both of her femurs fractured spontaneously last year, after being on Fosamax just about since it was put on the market. She also had many of the symptoms mentioned in your version of the ad, including atrial fib. Most recently she was diagnosed with a staghorn kidney stone, which was removed last week. I don’t know if we have Fosamax to thank for that, or not. Every chance I get, now, when I talk with doctors (when describing her history), I tell them about her disastrous experience with Fosamax and refer them to your website! I hope that they truly listen, learn, and become “converted” to natural strategies for bone health. Keep up the good work!
Is there a location where the Comment questions are answered?
thank you!
I have taken both Actonel and Boniva for several years and I did notice pain in my legs that I never had before and fingers. I did read up on the side effects and stopped taking them although the Dr. still was trying to make me take a different kind, but I looked it up also and it still has all the same ingredients as all the others and I also started experiencing jaw pain which all are subsiding since I refused to take any of that stuff again. I also found out that it stays dominate in your body for five years. I also never had any improvements in my bones after taking both drugs. Just Pain!!! I am now taking Bone Maximizer 3 and Ostera vitamins from a Health Drug Store which does Natural Health Vitamins instead of all that syntectic drugs which is unhealthy for your body.
I have wanted to write to Sally Fields for a few years now & tell her she is misleading millions of women about bone loss..what a shame huh???
My doctor was very upset because I would not take the Boniva he wants me on for osteoporosis. He claims he has treated thousands of women and none have ever had side effects from it. I told him that probably none had connected their symptoms with the drug because they trusted him and didn’t investigate it on their own first!
This is fabulous! I too took Boniva for a time, experienced some side effects and through continued research, I then made the smart desicion to stop the drug. I have never looked back and feel healthier then ever. My routine is eat right, stay active and take the right vitamins. My MD agrees and together our game plan is working. Looking forward to my next Bone Density to see the results.
Thank you for the creative story remake. Wonderful food for thought!
Happy Spring!
I think all pharmaceutical advertisements should be banned. I agree with you 100%. I read all your comments. I had been diagnosed with osteoporisis and decided to go the alternative medicine way. By fixing my adrenal deficiency, and getting my pituitary gland to work – balancing my hormones and adding a good dosage of calcium and magnesium, my last pyrilinks test showed no more bone breakdown.
How did you find out about your hormonal imbalance and choose the right supplements to support your adrenals and pituitary gland?
Thanks,
Norma
I to would like to know more about the adrenals and pituitary gland supplements.
I always liked Sally Field, and still do. If she does not yet know the truth about Boniva, I hope she finds out soon. Vivian I’m enormously greatful for you and the info you bring to us. Could you cover what supplements you are recommending. I think I’m covered, I just want to be sure. I could use some recommendations for bone-strengthening excercises for someone that has difficulty standing and poor balance. Namaste!
i TOOK BONIVA FOR 11 MONTHS AND STARTED GETTING PAIN IN BOTH MY LEGS. IN LESS THAN A YEAR I HAD TWO BROKEN FEMURS AND WAS IN A WHEEL CHAIR FOR THREE MONTHS. I REFUSED TO AKE ANY OF THE DRUGS. EVERYONE THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY WHEN I BLAMED THE BONIVA FOR MY PAIN. THE DOCTOR NO LONGER PRESCRIBES ANY OF THOSE DRUGS AND I REFUSED TO TAKE IT WHEN I DISCOVERED I HAD BROKEN FEMURS. NOW THE FDA HAS FINALLY ISSUED A STATEMENT REGARDING THESE DRUGS. MY PAIN IS COMING BACK AGAIN AND THE DOCTOR SAYS THE CRACKS ARE BACK SO IT TAKES LONGER FOR THE DRUGS TO GET OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM.
I knew the Sally Field ad was a lie. I just
don’t know why she continues to advertise false
information about boniva. I hope people do
some research before deciding to use drugs to
reverse their bone loss. I know I have and
NO drugs for me.
IT’S THE MONEY, HONEY
Thank goodness I found you and your treatment for osteoporosis. The side effects are awful and stopping new bone formation cannot be right. Thanks once again. Monica Phillips
After THREE months of horrendous side effects, I went on-line and discovered how bisphosphonates actually work. YIKES! I stopped taking Boniva. My doctor and I almost had a shouting match when I told him that I did not like the pathology of the drug. When he told me that 25% of elderly (HEY! I’, 68!!!) people who break hips never recover, I told him that meant that 75% DID recover. He stormed out of the room. Wow. And this is a guy that until this happened I trusted.
Remeber that Dr’s are paid by big Pharma to push drugs over supplements. You r was probably thinking that your refusal will not allow him to make his quota.
Sad but true….
I have stopped taking the Boniva a few months ago. There was no increased bone mass so why take it. My question is, since I have taken Boniva, and Fosamax be for that, is their still hope that I can reverse my bone loss in a natural way? I afraid that since I took it for about 9 years, that my bones won’t abosorb the good things anymore. Can this be reversed also?
This whole article on all these drugs really scares me a lot!. What is the solution or the answer to save our bones from breaking? Do we believe our bone density test or what? I’m 81 yrs. old and I have just taken my third Actonel pill. I had the bone density test and my Doctor said it wasn’t all that good. I do have osteoporosis. Why— won’t Doctors read these comments on the internet when they are really happening to us.?
I have been diagnosed with Polymylgia Rheumatic, and was put on Prednisone, since Prednisone thins the bones. The Doctor put me on Boniva..have been taking this for 5 months. My polymylgia flared up again..I was doing very well before with the Prednizone..I am wondering if the Boniva could be causing the Polymylgia to start up again, and should I stop taking the Boniva..after reading all the comments about Boniva. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Vivian:
Thanks for the detailed information. I took Boniva twice and I had the worst heartburn of my entire life. They are trying to have me take reclast but I have made up my mind not to take it either. The drug companies are only interested in making profits.
Margaret
Amen! Remember how they pushed us to take HRT because *that* would prevent osteoperosis? Bottom line? Drug companies are interested in THEIR bottom lines; NOT our health. I’s time our doctors paid attention to what we tell them rather than what the drug reps. tell them.
Good for you. I took Boniva for about 4 months(then I stoppped) and now have heartburn with a dependence on Prilosec (both prescribed by my doctor). I never had it before taking Boniva. I tried going off the Prilosec and the heartburn returned.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND BONIVA for anyone. By the way, my doctor later recommended Reclast – a once a year injection. Needless to say I declined.
Vivian,
I was so glad to find you when I was given an RX for Actinol. My doctor called it into the pharmacy with little explanation, actually “someone” in the office told me. I refused to pick it up, and finally told my doctor I was not going to, and lucky me, she told me she would not be mad if I did not take it! The side effects are so frightening, I would rather take my chances and use your suggestions. Thank you for all of the information your have provided!!!!!
Sandy
Good for you. It’s your body and his pocket book.
Thanks Vivian for all of your information. It’s too bad that I didn’t know about these drugs. My Mom was prescribed FOSAMAX by her doctor. When I found out about it, I asked her if the doctor told her that she had Osteoporosis, she said no, even though her spine had started to curve. He never used the term Osteoporosis. I didn’t get a chance to talk with him to find out about it because I thought that it was supposed to help her.
Otherwise she seemed to be in good health, until she started falling. No bones broken but then other things started to happen like heartburn, palpitations in her neck that we never related to FOSAMAX.
She passed away at 91, but it’s possible she might still be around if she and I were aware of natural remedies. She was always very healthy, slim and active, but started going downhill about 5 years before her death (around the same time she was given the FOSAMAX). Seniors are very trusting of their doctors and do not question anything.
My first experience with an Osteoporosis drug was Actonel but I started having chest pains so I stopped taking the drug. I told my doctor about it and he prescribed another drug but in a nasal-spray form. I don’t remember the name of it but I do remember what happened after taking it……..I woke up at night with my head “swimming”. I got out of bed but had difficulty walking because the room felt like it was swaying back and forth. Well, I stopped that drug and told my doctor what happened and he asked if I would like to try another one which was administered through an IV. I told him “no way”. I have since doubled up on my calcium intake, added additional Vitamin D, exercise and I watch my diet. I get my next bone scan in 3 days and I’m hoping it’s better than my last one which was 2 years ago.
Which is better for absorbsion, Calcium Citrate or Calcium Carbonate ? I have gotten confused. Am taking this with Vit D. Thanks for the help. Renee
I was wondering which calcium is the best also.
Calcium Citrate
Hi Renee…I tried several calcium pills. The one that works best for me is Calcium-Magnesium with Vitamin D Complex. IT IS A CAPSULE NOT A TABLET AND GOES DOWN WITH EASE. Each capsule has 1,000mg of calcium, 400iu of vitamin D and 500 of Magnesium. I take 5 of these each day with meals and two additional Vit D3…they are 500iu each.
Also I just heard Dr. Amen speak on PBS and he recommends 6,000 iu of Vitamin D. I’m not sure about that. Good luck!
5,000 IU of vitamin D is the “norm” these days for North America especially in the winter.
It is a good idea to do a blood test on vitamin D before deciding on the dosage.
Calcium and D may not be adequate for some people. If you are not a vegan, try MCHC.
If you are a vegan, you may want to rethink. Veganism may be the reason why you have brittle bones.
Check this out: https://chetday.com/vegetarianarticles.htm
Many vegans have stopped the practice because they listen to their bodies and are aware of the potential danger.
Thank you for this wonderful rendition of the truth that people are not being told about regarding bone health. There are many such false leading commercials. Each of us can pay it forward by passing information on to family, frienda, and doctors.
It’s time to take a look at the food industry
as well. I’ve lost six pounds in two weeks by not eating chocolate, sugar, white flour products, bread potatoes, etc. Eat a minimum amount of fish, chicken or some form of protein and less red meat. Eat more fruits and vegetables, etc. Did you know that adding cinnamon to fruit, etc. helps the sugar levels not to spike? I use it daily.
I learned today how eating cereal is very unhealthy to the body. It keeps one fat. It take four days to eliminate your sugar and carb cravings. Reach your subconscious by listening to hypnosis tapes for weight loss. In one day, I’m already seeing a remarkable change in drinking more water, exercising, and food choice selections.
Exercise is a must. However, long cardio exercise is not needed. I highly recommend the
PACE program and the research behind it. See for yourself.
Together, we can make a difference. Please share other relevant health tips, also.
I look forward to reading your tips.
Gail
Hi Gail
Can you tell me where I would find out about the PACE program?
Thanks,
Norma
Hi Gail,
Have you googled: “Earthlings” video? I’m intersted in whether or not, after watching it, if others are switchcing to a vegetarian diet?
Virginia
I agree! I took fosomax for 10 months in 2008/09 and one year later, I still have side effects: tightness in chest and troubled breathing. I have had numerous tests (out-of-pocket expense is almost $5,000.00)with no diagnosis. I believe it is the oseto drug, plain and simple! I believe I am getting better but the drug stays in your bones for 10 years. Can you tell me if after being off the drug for 1 year, will my bones start the natural process of breaking down and building up?
She should also add “they are paying me $$$ to appear in this commercial”!!!
Vivian: Thank you…thank you…GOD BLESS YOU !!!
Every time I see this ad by Sally Field, I put my mute button on until it is finished…even my husband is turned off on it (smart man.)
Strange…we are not told the whole story when we view this ad.
Thank you again for verifying this ad as false advertising…
Blessings…Elizabeth W.
Thank you so much. Your information is fabulous. I am on a mission to educate my family, friends and anyone that will listen. I found out at 40(14 years ago) that I had osteoporosis and the doctors wanted to put me on Fosamax which had only been out a few years. Even being told I would probably be in a wheelchair and would fall apart, I refused. Now, I couldn’t be happier that I had the guts to tell the doctors, NO WAY. I would probably be in a wheelchair if I had taken the drugs. Good vitamins, lots of D, exercise etc is the key to good bones. Thank you Vivian for everything. I really enjoy your site.
Has anyone informed Sally about the hazards of Boniva?
Vivian I loved your new and honest version of the ad. I,too, become enraged at the ad and also scream “what is wrong with you Sally”. I know she has to be making lots of money but, hey, your health is more important. At least we are the fortunate ones having found you Vivian to guide us. Keep the info coming. I love hearing from you.
Anne
Love your ad Vivian! I am just like all the other’s above….I get really upset when I see Sally Fields promoting Boniva! The harmful results of these products is not a secret anymore so I wonder if she’s even taking the drug and I doubt she needs the money from the commercials…so why doesn’t she take a stand!
Thanks, as always, Vivian!
Why should I take the advice of a has-been actress, like Field??
Hello Vivian 🙂
Thank you for the article today. I was on a once monthly drug too but unless I am mistaken on the spelling, it was called BONVIVA. Is the the same drug but with a different spelling? I came off this drug because I have had many dental issues because I have Sjogrens Syndrome, where I lost all of my teeth due to having no saliva.
My dental consultant explained the side effects of this drug and what it did to the jaw bone, as I didn’t fancy going through life with a collapsed jaw I stopped the drug. He advised that it would take 5 years to come back out of my system. I had a number of tests done and scans, luckily no damage was spotted.
I stopped this drug after using it or 3 years. I had been trying to get titanium implants inserted into my jaw to hold dentures in place, as having no saliva meant I couldn’t keep one in my mouth without it falling out.
The good news is, I have now had the implants inserted in January this year, the next stage will be in June. my consultant is very pleased with my healing. God only knows what would have happened if I had not found out in time what these drugs were doing to my body.
Good healthy eating and exercise is what is on my agenda and it has always been. I will never again take drugs to “strengthen” my bones.
have a nice day
Marysia 🙂
Marysia, wow I also have sjogren’s and have a multitude of dential problems. I now have osteporosis in my lumbar spine and osteopenia in my hips. I am 60 years and very healthy, walking, weight-lifting and streching. I am NOT going to start the durgs and the doc. is upset with me. I will use my diet, exercise, and try to keep my body pH in check. I wish you the best.
My experience with BONIVA, then Actonel, Fosomax — the bio -Phosphate class of drug therapy was negative.
While taking on a NEW JOB (i.e. trying to work!) I experienced all the voice-over to the commercial issues — jaw pain, head pain (like I wore a crown), ankle and knee pain (I had an auto accident so my left patella was smashed in 1997 but has repaired over time with appropriate surgeries…). When other friends had taken the drug — generally fosomax, they just ASSUMED the additional pain was “OLD AGE” and not drug related… I don’t buy that excuse…
Since 1986 I love to swim for fitness, seasonally ski and walk…also take my calcium & Vit D supplements since my body was not absorbing them properly…
FOr the past eight months I have been taking Evista (or Ralista cloned by Cipia in India) that has “stabilized” my loss.. but it seems to make me want to move more — so not sure if it is doing anything to replace my bone.
A macrobiotic advocate, I am now focused on my collards, spinach, and similar green leafy vegetables to increase my bone strength.
I plan to discontinue my Evista when I think I have a “normal” life… is there such thing?

Everytime I see this ad, I want to scream,
“Liar! You are selling out the women of
America for big pharma … how much did you
make for that plug, Sal My Gal!?? A younger
friend said to me one day at church when were
talking about osteo, “Well, Sally Field said
it was good for you!” I think many Americans
are very naive and have been brought up to just
do whatever the “good doctor” tells them to do.
My parents were certainly like this, but I am not. People
need to educate themelves so they can think for
themselves. I applaud you, Vivian, for using
Sally Field as an example of what “political
whores” really do….they sell themselves for
money!!! Namaste.
This is a great article. I to want to scream every time I see this add. I wonder how Sally Field sleeps at night. I also worry about every woman out there that is still trusting premarin. I have researched Bio-Identical Hormones for over 14 yrs. Believe me that this is the only way to build bone safely. I do consults for an alternative dr. in my community giving the knowledge needed to each woman about how all our hormones are needed for a life time and work together like an orchestra. It is sad what the drug co. are doing to us. At least some of us are getting the picture. All of you who want to build bone, please contact me and let me guide you through the entire process in a natural healthy way. I have references for you and many testimonials. My neighbor just had a bone density test after one year on BHRT. She actually gained bone and is no longer in osteopenia. I have written a book on the subject, soon to be printed. Let’s give honor to the late Dr. Lee, he was the pioneer in discovering that progesterone is the hormone that needs to be replaced to rebuild bone. His legacy will live on forever. We need to spread his message. Knowledge is the key! I would love to guide all of you to a healthier and disease free life. My email is ww*********@*****er.com" rel="nofollow ugc">http://ww*********@*****er.com or call 330-497-8927 My passion is to spread the news on how to rebuild bone without the worthless drugs.

Well done for helping us all out. Thank you so much. Why don’t you send your superior version of the ad to Sally Field and see if she’s interested in making a more accurate ad for Boniva?
YEAH FOR PAM…YES, YES, SOMEHOW SEND THIS EMAIL TO SALLY FIELDS…
SHE SOMEHOW MIGHT NOT KNOW HOW THIS “DRUG” DESTROYS PEOPLE’S
BODIES. IN FACT, ALL OF US WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH SALLY…LET US KNOW…GO FOR IT !!!
Elizabeth W.
I love your sense of humor Vivian! It’s not just these drugs that I have become aware of all the complications barely mentioned in television ads, but almost EVERY drug. It’s really disheartening. I’m grateful I am now following your natural plan for so far, 6 months. And I have faith that by the time of my next bone density in two years that I will be perfectly stable. I was on Evista for 10 years and my bone density DID improve. But turning menopausal it had no effect. That IS when I found your plan. Keep the message going.
WOW! I LOVE YOUR VERSION OF THE BONIVA ADVERTISEMENT!!
I AM AN OCCPUATIONAL HEALTH NURSE FOR A LARGE MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. I SEND OUT A WEEKLY HEALTHTIP TO EVERYONE IN THE COMPANY. WOULD YOU ALLOW ME TO USE THIS AS ONE OF THE WEEKLY HEALTHTIPS WHICH GOES OUT TO OUR EMPLOYEES?
Don’t believe the hype about these drugs. My gyno prescribed Evista, then Actonel and finally Boniva. I had problems with each and every one of them. The last one caused the worse problems with ulcers and reflux and all kinds of abdominal problems. Now he wants me to go on Forteo. I refuse and will continue to follow the program.
My reply to you is do not take forteo. I took it for two years like I was supposed to. When I first had my bone density test at age 53, I was told that I had the bones of an 80 year old woman. My doctor told me that the only drug to reverse my bone loss was forteo.
Well guess what, I had my bone density test a few months back and they told me that there was no significant improvement. I wasted hundreds of dollars and lots of sometimes painful shots and no improvement. I was angry. I have also suffered from problems with my teeth and had a crown come out and my tooth broke off in pieces. I believe that it is because I took forteo.
It was only after this that I found out about Vivian and her book. I am no longer taking any medications for osteoporosis and I feel so much better. I think that eating right and exercise will improve my bone health so much more than any medication prescribed by my doctor or any pharmaceutical company.
Vivian and her book has been a great help to me and I hope she will be to you too.
My doctor and I are at loggerheads over my refusal to take osteo drugs and many more, just because I am of a certain age and the numbers say I have this and that and should be taking these and those. In fact, at my last appointment, when I was a little late, he put in my file that I have MEMORY LOSS. So controlling, so little thinking or listening that I know I need to find another doctor who is more respectful and amenable to hearing patients’ words. I really do feel I am being punished, because who would know what goes on behind closed doors and who would believe the patient, who is expected to be meek and submissive.
I appreciate your information and look at it frequently. I am so glad I on my own did not want to do these drugs and found you then online before I dd personal harm. I am much more active in the gym with weight bearing exercises and continued healthy eating and have begun to see some improvement in the bone scan and now am back to osteopenia. Drugs are NOT the answer. Thanks for getting the word out.
Last week, I heard on TV, that there is a some type of “class action”
against Fossamax for causing instantaneous breaks in the upper leg.
Have you heard this too?????
I believe in your save our bones protocol .
Since I started your program I feel much better.
Thanks for all your info.
I totally agree and I am a perfect example of this proble. Years on Fosamax and Evista with steady loss of bone exhibited in the BD test and then a slight increase with Boniva. One and a half years later, due to a serious fall, I broke the head of my femur in 3 places. 55 years old otherwise in GREAT physical shape and in good weight. Now I see this article in the NY Times and think “we have just seen the tip of the iceburg” There are going to be many joining the ranks of the “I am fed up and will not take the bull anymore” Have a look for yourselves.

I took Fosomax THEN Boniva for years. Like the above writer, I hope I haven’t done irreparable damage. Has anyone studied the long-term after effects of taking these drugs? Can the damage be reversed?
This whole deception just makes me SICK!! Although, I have to give my gyno credit. When I announced that I was NOT taking these drugs anymore, he supported me wholeheartedly (without criticizing the drug/drug companies, of course).
First, I think you should be a screen writer. I love it.
You helped me decide “NOT” to take any of the drugs and I’m grateful. I’ve changed my eating habits, per your request, and I feel so much better. Who needs red meat and cow’s milk? I can’t wait to have my next bone density test. I’m sure it will show improvement if not reversal.
Every time Sally Field appears in those ads, I want to throw things at the TV and scream, “Liar!” I wish I had known the truth about bisphosphanates before, like a submissive lamb, I took Fosamax for several years. Fortunately, I didn’t fracture, and it’s been several years since I’ve taken the drug. I just hope I didn’t do myself irreparable harm. What I can’t understand is why the FDA and NOF refuse to face the truth, and keep on insisting that bisphosphanates are helping lots of women. Where’s the evidence? There isn’t any. Osteo-related fractures are on the rise, during the same period that the use of these awful drugs is on the rise. The people who compiled the statistics on increased fractures didn’t even inquire whether those who had fractured were taking osteo drugs (I checked on this.) So how can they claim the drugs are helping reduce fractures? The opposite conclusion appears to be inescapable.
I’d love to have a copy of this to take to my doctor who blindly recommends drugs for osteoporsis just to shut me up. Can yo send me a copy? My printer is on the fritz. B Bell
