Did you know that in Medieval England parents would tie rabbits’ feet around their babies’ necks to ward off illness? Doctors would also spit on wounds because saliva was believed to have healing properties.
Indeed, history is replete with unfounded health beliefs, and to everyone’s detriment, the milk myth is among the most tenacious.
Milk is much more than just a drink; it’s a cultural phenomenon that can be traced back thousands of years. And still today, the milk myth resonates loud and clear: in 2001, the average American child consumed 104 quarts of cow’s milk.
Milk depletes the calcium from your bones
The milk myth has spread around the world based on the flawed belief that this protein and calcium-rich drink is essential to support good overall health and bone health in particular at any age. It is easy to understand that the confusion about milk’s imaginary benefits stems from the fact that it contains calcium – around 300 mg per cup.
But many scientific studies have shown an assortment of detrimental health effects directly linked to milk consumption. And the most surprising link is that not only do we barely absorb the calcium in cow’s milk (especially if pasteurized), but to make matters worse, it actually increases calcium loss from the bones. What an irony this is!
Here’s how it happens. Like all animal protein, milk acidifies the body pH which in turn triggers a biological correction. You see, calcium is an excellent acid neutralizer and the biggest storage of calcium in the body is – you guessed it… in the bones. So the very same calcium that our bones need to stay strong is utilized to neutralize the acidifying effect of milk. Once calcium is pulled out of the bones, it leaves the body via the urine, so that the surprising net result after this is an actual calcium deficit.
Knowing this, you’ll understand why statistics show that countries with the lowest consumption of dairy products also have the lowest fracture incidence in their population (there’s more on this later).
But the sad truth is that most mainstream health practitioners ignore these proven facts. I know it firsthand because when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, my doctor recommended that I drink lots of milk in addition to taking Fosamax.
Fortunately, I did neither, because I knew that…
Cow’s milk is custom-designed for calves
Thanks to our creative ingenuity and perhaps related to our ancient survival needs, we adopted the dubious habit of drinking another species’ milk. Nobody can dispute that cow’s milk is an excellent food source for calves. Weighing around 100 pounds at birth, a calf typically gains approximately eight times its weight by the time it is weaned. But unlike humans, once calves are weaned, they never drink milk again. And the same applies to every mammalian species on this planet.
Also, each mammalian species has its own “designer” milk, and cow’s milk is no exception. For example, cow’s milk contains on average three times the amount of protein than human milk which creates metabolic disturbances in humans that have detrimental bone health consequences.
It’s important to bear in mind that mother’s milk is excellent nourishment for human babies, but its composition is very different from cow’s milk.
Scientific studies show that milk increases fracture risk
Many scientific studies contradict the conventional wisdom that milk and dairy consumption help reduce osteoporotic fractures. Surprisingly, studies demonstrating that milk and dairy products actually fail to protect bones from fractures outnumber studies that prove otherwise. Even drinking milk from a young age does not protect against future fracture risk but actually increases it. Shattering the “savings account” calcium theory, Cumming and Klineberg report their study findings as follows:
“Consumption of dairy products, particularly at age 20 years, was associated with an increased risk of hip fracture in old age. (“Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Hip Fractures in the Elderly”. American Journal of Epidemiology. Vol. 139, No. 5, 1994).1
And the 12 year long Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that those who consumed the most calcium from dairy foods broke more bones than those who rarely drank milk. This is a broad study based on 77,761 women aged 34 through 59 years of age.
In the authors’ own words:
“These data do not support the hypothesis that higher consumption of milk or other food sources of calcium by adult women protects against hip or forearm fractures.” (Source: Feskanich D, Willett WC, Stampfer MJ, Colditz GA. Milk, dietary calcium, and bone fractures in women: a 12-year prospective study. American Journal of Public Health. 1997).2
Shocking statistics ignored by mainstream medicine
In the Osteoporosis Reversal Program one of the topics I discuss is the complete disregard of scientific evidence that discredits milk and dairy products as the best source of calcium.
One exception is Amy Lanou Ph.D., nutrition director for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington, D.C., who states that:
“The countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are the ones where people drink the most milk and have the most calcium in their diets. The connection between calcium consumption and bone health is actually very weak, and the connection between dairy consumption and bone health is almost nonexistent.”
Surprised? You shouldn’t be, because as I mentioned earlier in this article…
Milk is an acidifying animal protein
Like any other animal derived protein-rich food, milk has a positive potential renal acid load (PRAL) which triggers a protective biological reaction to neutralize all the damaging acidic protein before it reaches the kidneys.
The body is designed for survival, so it sacrifices bone density to protect the kidneys and urinary tract because the latter are essential to survival. And the most readily available source of acid neutralizer is in the bones. So even though milk contains calcium, it ends up sapping your bones of that crucial mineral. But that’s not all because…
Today’s milk is a processed food
Until the end of the 19th century in Europe and the beginning of the 20th century in the US, milk was consumed unpasteurized or raw. Later on, homogenization became the industry’s standard. These processes further alter milk’s chemistry and actually increase its detrimental acidifying effects.
Raw milk advocates claim that if cow’s milk is left “as is” it is a healthy and wholesome drink. It is true that raw milk is less acidifying than processed milk and that pasteurization and homogenization may cause a long list of digestive and other health problems, but I still don’t recommend drinking any kind of cow’s milk.
Nowadays, milking cows are given antibiotics and most are also injected with a genetically engineered form of bovine growth hormone (rBGH). A man-made or synthetic hormone used to artificially increase milk production, rBGH also increases blood levels of the insulin-growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in those who drink it. And higher levels of IGF-1 are linked to several cancers.
This should not be ignored, especially in view of recent information by Samuel Epstein, MD, Professor of Environmental Medicine at the University of Illinois School of Public Health, and Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition. In a press release titled “Monsanto’s Hormonal Milk Poses Serious Risks of Breast Cancer, Besides Other Cancers” (June 21, 1998) Dr. Epstein concludes that:
“Drinking rBGH milk would thus be expected to significantly increase IGF-1 blood levels and consequently to increase risks of developing breast cancer and promoting its invasiveness.”
Even though organic milk is from cows that are not given antibiotics or rBHG, if you truly care about your bone health and your overall health, you should…
Avoid drinking cow’s milk
As I explain in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program and contrary to mainstream recommendations, drinking milk and eating lots of dairy products are not the answer to reversing osteoporosis. And while in the Osteoporosis Reversal Program no food is completely off limits, I strongly recommend that you explore the different milk substitute options that I will list for you here.
But first, I’d like to clarify that unsweetened fermented or cultured dairy products such as yogurt, kefir, and sour cream are acid neutral. Yogurt in particular is chock-full of beneficial qualities. As is the case with milk, organic yogurt does not have rBGH, but even several of the most well-known yogurt brands have stopped using the bovine growth hormone (rBGH). You should call your favorite yogurt company to confirm. One more clarification: when I say unsweetened I mean without sugar or any artificial sweetener. However, you can add honey or stevia, a zero calorie plant-derived sweetener that is delicious and alkalizing as well. I like to carry around stevia packets in my purse so that I’m always able to sweeten food or drinks when I’m on the go.
The best milk substitutes
My favorite milk substitute is unsweetened almond milk, not only because it is alkalizing (as almonds are), but also because it’s delicious and tastes very similar to milk. I even cook with it!
If almond milk is hard to get, you can also try rice or soy milk. I strongly suggest consuming only organic soy milk to insure it’s not made with genetically modified soy. There is also some controversy about unfermented soy products, so try to use it in moderation.
What Else Haven’t They Told You?
What else have you been told about bone health by your doctor or other “experts” that is flat out wrong? What other “facts” (like drinking milk does a body good) are keeping you from optimal health?
Myths like these are a big reason I created the Osteoporosis Reversal Program. To give you the straight scoop on how to deal with osteoporosis the natural way.
I can help you take control of your future.

Personally, I would like to see more proof. Yes, calcium from your bones is used to balance pH – BUT ONLY in cases of calcium deficiency. If your diet has enough calcium in it, the dietary calcium will handle it. Almond milk and soy milk are about the nastiest things I can think of next to anything made with them (yes, this is an opinion but I refuse to belief the author of this article isn’t biased as well.) If you have a healthy nutritional intake of calcium, I want to see THAT be the cause(or a direct link) to your death. Only then will I stop drinking milk with my daily bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios.
Honey Nut Cheerios are 50% sugar by weight.I’d get rid of those too.
I have heard this before. I too would appreciate source citing. What about cheese? I love, love, love cheese. We cut out dairy milk consumption (due to my child’s allergies), but I am curious if cheese does the same things as milk. Does it matter if the milk or cheese is raw? I hope you get to answer my questions… hopefully with source citations. 🙂
I did flip through the comments & couldn’t find a clear answer on cheese or raw dairy and their effects (if different).
This is a load of rubbish… I just think its people that dontnlike milk making up bullshit as they go along
open your mind.
You open your mind. Milk is in fact very good for you there is absolutely nothing wrong with drinking it everyday in small portions. The funny thing is that pretty much any product we consume from cows can be talked down upon but guess what! WE STILL CONTINUE TO EAT IT! you could say the same about a lot of things we put in our body even things that are supposed to be really good for us can have some bad things about them too so lighten up please
You realize that when you say “milk” you’re talking about dairy milk, when even if you’re going to drink milk from an animal there are healthier milks to choose from, from other animals. Now…”milk” can also be soy milk, almond milk, all different types of “milk” that are actually good for you. If you don’t believe the info in this article, fact check it for yourself.
—–> the china study.
We vegetarians have very little choice. If milk is also removed from our diet, then where do we land? Please specify. No milk, no yogurt, nothing. How do I deal with this?
I drink over 12 different types of milk. 7 grain milk, soy milk, almond milk, adzuki milk, hazlenut milk, etc. I also get my protein from hundreds of different sources instead of just dairy, eggs, and meat. It’s a shame that people think eating healthy and being vegan means making sacrifices. You’re making the sacrifices “right now” by drinking and eating dairy. Wonder why your baby gets so many ear infections? Dairy creates excess mucus. It’s breast milk from a cow lol, I don’t understand why it’s so hard for everyone to realize that we’re only drinking dairy milk because it was easy for the industry to make a lot of money doing it. Try soy yogurt, or almond yogurt, you’ll be surprise!
What a stupid thing to say, skim milk is very good for you- especially for your bones. My father lived till 87 and drank 2 quarts a day- and no broken bones
What an ignorant comment to make, lol. I’m sorry, but 87 is not old age. This is old age, and you don’t get it from eating and drinking dairy, sorry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj7knA3-YUs&feature=player_embedded
If you’d like to live past 87, stop drinking milk lol.
Marty you are seriously dumb. Its a reference that person made towards something in the article, and as a matter of fact 87 is pretty old! in fact its older than what the average person lives. And i know people who smoked a pack of smokes a day for 60 years who lived past 87 so why dont you try that and ill do you a favor and drink my milk everyday and hopefully we both live past 87.
Thanks for calling me dumb. Shows a lot about your character, as well as your knowledge of diet my friend. First of all, only on this continent is the average person dying of old age before 87. Try climbing out of your box and looking around a bit. Or, in fact, watch a film called Forks Over Knives and see for yourself…not sure what cigarettes had to do with anything…but I also hope you and I both live long and happy lives. :]
I don’t think it matters if you drink milk. You are not going to die until its your time.If you like milk drink it.Moderation is the key to everything.
Right and people also smoke cigarettes and live till they are 80 with no lung cancer but that still dosent justify if they were healthy and that cigarettes are not bad for you. My mother always smoked and was proud when doctors would always say her lungs were healthy and clean but she still got breast cancer twice and is undergoing another surgery soon.
Smokers that were long lived back in the day were probably smoking mainly tobacco and not 66% tobacco blend they have now.And today’s tobacco is actually radioactive and most likely causing the cancer.I met an 84 year old woman from England who had been smoking since she was 14.She smoked the same brand all those years.
How can you write an article and not provide any references? And look how quick these noobs on this page are who believe what Vivian Goldschmidt says right off the bat. I can show you a few links that says milk is PERFECTLY FINE FOR YOU. Then what? That’s what I thought…
I had to read all of these comments, the inteligent ones from people who actually read, and the emotional ones from the people who only like to shout their uneducated opinions. Cows make milk for their baby cows, just like humans do, cats and dogs do and elephants do. They don’t make it for full grown, other animals. You are what you eat…..Moooooooo.
Oh Vivian thak you so much .I am a colon hydrotherapist I have been teaching this info for 42 years!!!! it allways surprises me to see people giving their babies milk not to mention formula…. your info is so needed out there …. blessings on you and yours .sherry rojas c.h.t.
I also read somewhere that drinking too much milk increases the chances of getting prostate cancer.
Yet i have to question the study about the broken bones. Sure they tested it on a lot of people, almost 78 thousand, though I am still not convinced. Maybe it just shows people who drink milk have a more active lifestyle and thus are more likely to hurt themselves? It just feels way to situational bound to prove that the bones are more fragile. Sure if they gathered up a few thousand people half of whom drinks milk and the other doesn’t and actively broke their bones and mesured how much presure they could sustain I would be convinced. For obvious reasons though, I doubt we’d ever see any research like this.
I drink milk because I like the taste and it helps increase my protein intake. Even if it was completely proved it made my bones more fragile, i’d still do it. For the same reason i still from time to time eat fast food, drink soda, drink alcohol, eat snacks, eat none whole grain pasta and rice simply because I like it.
I don’t really see why anyone would stop drinking it from this reason alone unless they revert their diets completely, not eating anything unhealthy at all. Which I also believe would be difficult since you can find studies about almost anything that declares it’s in some way unhealthy.
Thoughts?
i fully endorse your statement that cow milk should be left to calves to drink and there also calves stop drinking it once they become adult. Then why man should be an exception? On the contrary looking at the data human milk has less protein and fat than bovine ,and also the fact over 75% of the population suffers from lactose intolerance, drinking bovine milk does not appear to be a good survival strategy endorsed by nature even.Yet the this is a myth that is perpetuated over ages and with so much commercial interest at stake,it looks a herculean task to wean the public from drinking bovine milk. But we have to keep educating public through public forums like this and I honestly appreciate the yeoman service you are doing through your Save your bones program…bravo, keep it up..
I have a question. Would Horchata be considered cow’s milk or rice milk. I love it and im gonna QQ if I cant drink it anymore
RU serious? Hochata has milk in it with rice sugar and cinnamon. Either way it has cows milk, That is just one of the stupidest questions ever.
Actually, Nun Ya, yours was one of the stupidest comments ever. Horchata can be made in a variety of ways, so it just depends on the recipe. I’ve had incredibly delicious horchata with no dairy milk in it whatsoever. The only “milk” was from the rice that soaked overnight.
Hey, My 2 year old son has a brain tumor and is going through chemo at the moment. Finnegan and his twin sister, Evelyn had breast milk and formula for the first year. ( I tried so hard but was never able to produce enough for both babies.) With the advice of our integrative health doctor here in Madison, Wi- the twins started drinking organic whole cow milk at 1 year. I am really interested in switching my son’s milk. I don’t think dairy is the best form of nutrition while he has cancer and is going through chemo. I can’t find an alternative though that has as much fat, protein and calories as whole cow milk. What do you suggest? I looked at hemp milk, soy and almond, but none of them have all the fat, protein and calories as whole milk. Sometimes, Finn doesn’t want to eat a lot when he is on chemo, but he almost always drinks his milk. Please help,
Nicole
I really hope that you check back and see this, as YOU can cure your son’s cancer right now without the help of your doctor’s. PLEASE DON’T DO CHEMO! Check out this link and start googling info and do your own research. THC kills cancer cells literally, and cures brain cancer. https://www.cashhydefoundation.com/
Your child does NOT have to continue to suffer through this and neither do you. Don’t let the terrible and corrupt laws of our country keep your child from living a full HEALTHY life. The chemotherapy will destroy his immune system and he will not be able to eat or fight the cancer.
Also, Hemp milk is very nutritious for your kids and has enough fat in it. There are also benefits to hemp milk that you may not realize, check this out.
https://www.naturalnews.com/036526_cannabinoids_breast_milk_THC.html
These are ridiculous comments and incredibly unhelpful to a parent going through a horrible time with sick child. I hope you realise that a naturopath in NZ who made these comments to a client with cancer (who eventually died from having her cancer never being treated properly) has been recently prosecuted for this. Highly irresponsible. i suppose you will suggest this parent should take their child for hocus pocus “therapy” which bears absolutely zero evidence but its all natural right, so it must be all right?! you’re ridiculous
Thanks for chiming in with some positivity. :] I’m sure this parent is glad for your warm words. I’m not sure which commenter you’re referring to, but both comments were appropriate and genuinely helpful, and yours was rude and distasteful. I suppose you would rather her child get chemo and radiation until there’s nothing left like that poor little Cash Hyde boy before his father stepped in and did the right thing. :]
THC… are you suggesting that this kid should smoke weed? I’m sorry, there are plenty of things I disagree with in modern medicine, but cancer is a pretty big deal and I think that doctors are pretty well-equipped to know which treatments are best.
I’m sorry, what exactly gives you the right to discredit medical professionals and claim that, even though there have been years and years of scientific studies and trials, you know better than them because you read a few articles on the Internet? Medical professionals took an oath to protect their patients, so tell me why they would give someone a dangerous treatment unless it was necessary and their best choice? Unless you have credentials to support your claim, perhaps you should reword your comments and make them suggestions rather than telling someone that all they need to do to cure their child’s cancer is ignore medical professionals and listen to an anonymous voice on the Internet. As well as this, telling someone who’s child has been diagnosed with cancer to “google info and do your own research” is unnecessary. If you were in her position, isn’t that the first thing you would do? I’m sure she has done a lot more research than you have.
Also, you say that hemp milk has ‘enough’ fat in it. What are you measuring that against? And how do you know what is ‘enough’ fat for her two children specifically?
to help you child get informed : go to ph miracle living website, read Dough Kaufman’s Know the cause. go read up on Dr Tullio Simoncini’s treatment for cancer.
Chemo Therapy is just about the worst treatment in modern society. Excess radiation causers way more problem than it fixes, which is to say, it might not even fix that problem at all. Chemo is simply awful for your body and is in NO way good for it. There are MUCH more effective ways of treating cancer that are both cheaper and MANY times safer. Research, my friend.
Could you please add references to your article, so that we can see which scientific papers you pulled information from?
Thanks!
Thanks for posting this . I have been looking for something like this . Good info I will check back for any info about juice diet recipes.
Sorry but there is no concluding scientific research to back up your theory, your argument is invalid and flawed.
Your mom is invalid and flawed!!! OOOHHHHH!!! But really, I have just read like 5 different articles basically saying the same thing, so think before you speak. and btw, do you want some ice for that burn?
Trololo, after reading the artical and reading most of the comments, I could not let this one pass. My question is this, are you one of the programed, dumb “sheep” who believes everything you read on the net? And one of the pig-headed people that think anyone who doesn’t agree with you is wrong. so you read five articals about this same thing huh? For every five saying its bad, there are 100 saying it is good. You can believe what you want i don’t care. but before you go belittling others, YOU should think before you speak. Do some research, Google that crap. There are many nutritional benefits from milk. So if 5 people say its bad then does that make the other 1500 wrong? I’m not saying its good or bad for you, I’ve drank milk all my life and never had any broken bones. Once again the standard for giving a good argument is to provide proof, there is none in this artical so the argument is in fact, invalid. so perhaps you should hold on to that ice for yourself…..
there are 100 saying it is good because we live in a capitalist society. there is no way to think of food as separate from economics now. People need to make a living so they sell meant, milk, cheese, yogurt – the dairy/meat industry is enormous. Politicans are telling newspapers what and what not to say, why aren’t farmers and their advertising execs telling politicians – nay… paying politicians to keep health off the table. Don’t talk about whats healthy. We live in a consumer society. It helps the doctors too. The more sickness=more money in their pockets. :/ it all works together. The problem: milk tastes so dang good how can it be bad for us? So here’s the challenge: TRY IT. Experiment with a raw food high carb diet for three days. You will understand then. That is the only way. Looking at facts on a screen will not change your life. But that will.
What if the person writing this is just trying to people to stop buying dairy milk so they will buy other milk. Your argument is invalid because it works both ways. They dairy farmers are certainly not the only people with money to be made.
Thank you. 🙂 It’s definitely a good point you make here!
Heya i am for the primary time here. I found this board and I find It truly useful & it helped me out a lot. I am hoping to offer something again and help others such as you aided me.
I have been on a vegetarian diet for 7 months and recently made the change to a vegan diet and feel wonderful. The upset stomach and acid reflux that was always present after eating any dairy products was totally eliminated. I feel light and clearheaded, I am an athlete and cycle 25km minimum everyday. Besides, I never heard anyone die of over consumption of kale! Eliminate dairy and you will see changed in all aspects of your life, including your waistline (I went down a pant size in a week of not consuming dairy)
No, but vegetables have varying levels of oxalic acid which cause a slew of issues in the kidneys and can cause joint pain if consumed in too high of a dosage, so you give some you take some.
Isn’t oxalic acid broken down in vegetables during the cooking process ?
Aren’t alot of the nutrients as well?
For the record, I enjoy the foods that most vegans would not like….including milk. My wife was given the book ” Eat to Live” and the claims made by this article are backed up with hard data in the book. Studies from many different parts of the world are definitely eye opening and challenge some of the beliefs, notions, and experiences I/we have had throughout our life. The bottom line for me is eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die or investigate the claims of the book. The one claim that is more than curious is that milk actually lowers the calcium level in your body (through urination) when we are drinking the milk in part to increase the calcium in our body…strange indeed…..is it true? Things that make your go hmmmmm.
KALE has 7 times the amount of calcium than milk.
does any body can tell me if goat milk is bad for your bones?
https://documentaryheaven.com/food-that-kills/
if you want to know more about dairy protein and animal products effects on the human body check out this lecture.
There is still no real scientific proof either way. The surrent ‘world’ goes both ways.
Been drinking every type of milk since I was a little boy. From fat free to whole. Fell out of trees, off motorcycles and dirt bikes, off horses, jumped off roofs had snowboarding accident tearing tendons and ligiments in my shoulder but NEVER ONCE ever broke or fractured a bone. Our family consumes 5 to 6 gallons a week. We love cow juice. But we steer clear of the hormone given dairy.
You are a super human, no?
Complete lunacy and not a single scientifically documented fact.
Your mom is a lunatic. She told me last night.
You are just so stupid an annoying aren’t you? lunatic
plus 1
Oh and what are some good alternatives. lol. Forgot that part. I see a lot of people using almond milk?
Wow. After reading this article I couldnt help but notice all of the comments. Some of you guys are down right vicious to people. I have drank milk all of my life and so has my family. It was just what we and a lot of other american families where brought up with because we where told that milk was great for you. Im not going to down anyone because they do or dont drink milk. In all reality I love it. And love drinking it ice cold with fresh homeade cookies. Im sure a million things can be said about cookies to. Im not saying milk is good or bad for you. But the only thing I can say is that if you think milk is good for you and see nothing wrong with it then drink it. I drink soda. I know its not good for me but it is something I enjoy. If you are completely against milk and milk products then dont drink it. In the future if it comes out thart milk is bad. Then you guys will always be able to say I TOLD YOU SO. As a little experiment for myself I am going to not drink milk for one month and see if I notice anything different. I challenge other milk drinkers to do the same if you want to. I want to see if there are any big changes. I will let you guys know what happens during that month.
I’d be really interested to hear your results.
I think I am going to start a little experiment on my blog at http://www.activitynutritionsports.blogspot.com. For november I will drink milk every day, and for december I won’t drink a drop. I will compare keep track of how my body responds, and give some final opinions at the end.
thanks for your information. I will certainly send this information to family and friends. My family and I are vegans , avoiding animal products because of the horrifying abuse of animals in the food industry. Good to know that our beliefs are also good for our bodies! Rosemary
I loved up to you’ll receive carried out right here. The caricature is tasteful, your authored subject matter stylish. nonetheless, you command get got an nervousness over that you wish be delivering the following. unwell without a doubt come further before once more since exactly the similar just about a lot incessantly inside case you defend this hike.
Ummm… ? How about you speak English that makes sense…
Perhaps this comment was written in a language other than English and then run through a translation program. Those translation programs can really do a poor job sometimes.
Yes, not why it happens lots because i’m duh why am this is cool.
I have heard that the calcium is almond milk is hard to absorb in your system.
Also that taking prilosec makes it hard to absorb nutrients.
Cow’s milk for cows…human milk for humans. My wife was diagnosed with MS in 2005, and ultimately rejected the beta-interferon route and went dairy free and gluten free and has seen her symptoms RECEDE! We will never drink cow’s milk again, and will also stay away from gluten. Also, for those acting like we need milk, STFU! You must work in the industry…get a new job and stop purveying things we don’t need!
Hey Mel,
I been drinking COW’S MILK all my life and heck, I’m even on Priosec and guess what? I never broke ANY bones in my body. I fell down many times, I been push by someone before and crack my head off the cement and other then a big bump and some cuts, guess what? No broken skull or any other bones! If I am not mistaken, my late 91 year old grandfather never broke a bone in his body until 3 months before he died (2 months before he turned 91), and that was his hip! And what did he a lot when he was young (He was raised on a farm)? Milk! So 90 3/4 years with NO broken bones. Explain that please.
So, I guess I’m beening paid off right? Give me a break.
are you obese????
Can we please be scientific here? There is no scientific or statistical proof cited in either of your arguments. Just because a person happened to drink milk and never break a bone or happened to never drink milk and retain their high school weight, doesn’t prove anything. There could be lots of lurking variables in both cases. I’m sure there are healthy and unhealthy people all over the world who both drink and don’t drink milk. So please don’t extrapolate from one experience. This is a scientific question so we must approach it from a scientific stand point. And there’s no need to be rude. Honestly people, it’s just milk…
Prilosec is used by people with gurd, which is acid reflux, from a poor diet or being obese. Milk leaves acidic ash in your body, that leads to inflamation wihich leads to cancer. I don’t expect any of you to understand that. Most americans think that taking a pill to relieve their symptoms is okay. that’s sad. I’m 49 years old and weight the same 115 lbs I weighed in high school! And people think I’m 10 years younger than I am, that’s because I take care of myself and DON’T drink milk. Milk makes you FAT (DUH) and that just makes more of you fat people in this world getting in my way!
I am an athelete and I have been drinking milk my whole life. I have never once broken a bone which is a miracle if you know how many times I shouldve been in a cast.
Many thanks for this break through and bare facts offered the world may the Almighty Amenrah protect you and help you to get back your investment back on time to enable you offer the entire books soft copies free to benefit African too since many of us don’t have credit or debt cards to buy online. Secondly, what do you have to say about honey and lemon, because we have been informed in this part of the world that they contains too much acid so we should not be taking them. OSIRIS
I HAVE NOT READ YOUR STORY/I KNOW MAGNISEUM IS DESTROYED AFTER PASTERIZED IT IS THE KEY THE CATILYE TO HELP CALCIUM TO GE ABSORPTED IN TO THE BONE. I KNOW KIDS 8-9 YEARS OLD HAVE LOW BONE DENSITEY,IF TROPACANA CAN ADD VIT-C TO ORANGE JUICE,REMEMBER NOTHING TAKEN AWAY NOTHING ADD’ED.THE DAIRY INDUSTRY RAKE’S IN 19.1 BILLION A YEAR.EVEN IF GREED IS A INSTINCK THAT RULES DECISSION’S AFTER TOLD A.L.S. Richard quiet down man. You’re scaring the children.
Do you recommend taking calcium supplemets?
YES BUT MAKE SURE MAGNISEUM IS PART OF THE FORMULAR.IM NOT A D.R. BUT IM SURE THEY WOULD AGREE,BETTER YET ASK A PHARMACIST
Stevia has chemicles in it and truvia has no such thing. I believe that milk is not good for me. Everything is great except for stevia.
Truvia® stevia leaf extract <—- IS Stevia!! Stevia plant All-Natural Sugar IS 100% Natural. All sugars have NATURAL chemical properties. Look it up.
snake venom is all natural. Just saying that something being all natural in and of itself means nothing.
You’re right, Adam… Arsenic, fluoride, and lead could also be considered natural… We have to distinguish between the good, the bad (and the ugly) 🙂
Ok I have several problems with your anti-milk arguement (I’m sure its already been said)
1) You have osteoporosis, why should I listen to you? You already have bad bones, and its probably linked to you not consuming milk, etc
2) milk in North America contains vitamin D which assists in the ABSORPTION of CALCIUM. Unless you are taking straight calcium supplements, your side-effects are unfounded.
I’m sure you’re the type of person to like autism to vaccines, so please shut the fuck up. You are wrong, and you should be ashamed of discouraging a healthy diet.
VACCINES ARE A DANGER TO HUMAN’S,VACINE’S MADE 24 YEARS AGO MADE FROM THIRD WORLD COUTRIES GOT PEOPLE SICK BAD FILTERING,SO CHICKEN EMBRIOS TOOK IT’S PLACE BUT A YEAR AGO THEY USED ANAMIL’S BLOOD,BUT FOGOT THERE IS A JUMPING SPIECE VIRUS ,WHAT WAS A DISEASE TO ONE MAMMAL CAN CROSS OVER TO ANOTHER MAMMAL,CAT TO DOG HORSE TO COW. DONT GET ME STARTED ON DESERT ST0RM
Is your caps lock button broken? It seems you have intelligent arguments, but the all caps thing kinda makes your posts hard to read…
Ok, before you go around telling people to “shut the fuck up,” you dumb asshat, how about you actually do some research? Do you honestly think this is the only article on this? There have been many books and studies on this, and it is all true. You keep chugging back the milk, I hope you break every bone in your body you selfish jerk.
Hey dickfuck, why haven’t I broken a bone yet then? Go do some real research assfuck.
How old are you? Obviously not old enough to know that bone health is good when you’re young NO MATTER WHAT, it’s when you get older do the poor habits of drinking milk become a problem. You’re just another stupid fat American, who believes in this nation of fucked up food values. See food inc, you’ll get an idea. But, you won’t because you’re too fucking stupid to sit through the movie. I wish their was a State for just intelligent people.
I’m american, an athelete, 16 years old, and i only weigh like 103. tell me how i’m obese please. I would love to hear it. And yes, I drink that white, beautiful cow juice every day. I can’t get enough.
SHOW MY ALREADY SUBMITTED
OKAY THIS WILL BE SHORT,PASTERIZED MILK HAS NO MAGNISEUM ,SO USELESS.TWELVE COUNTRIES NO PASTERIZED MILK FOR CALCIUM, NO VASQULAR DESEASE’S , NO OTHER MAMMAL ON EARTH DRINK’S PASTURIZED MILK IN TO ADULT HOOD,PASTERIZED DAIRY AND CHELESTROL IS PLUAGE. THERE IS A INSTINCT OF MAN,6 MILLION YEARS IT HELPED NOW IT’S KILLING HIM GREED
Do you even know what Pasteurization is? Honestly, do you?
Richard is just like me. Finished homework and has nothing better to do than troll some scientists and know it all’s. Ignore him, I know what he’s up to.
Through analyzing degraded fats on unearthed potshards, scientists have discovered that Neolithic farmers in Britain and Northern Europe may have been among the first to begin milking cattle for human consumption.
The dairying activities of these European farmers may have begun as early as 6,000 years ago. According to scientists, the ability to digest milk was slowly gained some time between 5000-4000 B.C.E. by the spread of a genetic mutation called lactase persistance that allowed post-weaned humans to continue to digest milk.
If that date is correct, it may pre-date the rise of other major dairying civilizations in the Near East, India, and North Africa.

Thank you for at least being willing to post a rational science based response. It is sad to see the depths to which some have sunk in this thread. I have seen this research before regarding lactase persistence so it is true that certain ethnic lines are better able to digest it. That being said, the ability to digest a food does not equate it being good for you. the American diet in general is very acid producing and that is likely the reason behind our high rate of osteoporosis. I would say that greatly reducing or even eliminating most dairy would be helpful. The author was also thorough enough to remind us that yogurt does not have the same acidifying effect. Love this article. <3
You should also research the connection between dairy, IGF-1, skin proliferation and inflammation. I had adult acne (had mild acne as a teen) and it became more and more severe. Once I stopped drinking milk and dairy my skin has transformed dramatically, and very quickly. This also has a connection with rosacea and eczema as well as acne. I feel like these points can strengthen this article even further as milk harms you from the inside out. For some individuals, the body lets them know it is harming them in the form of acne, inflammation, irritable bowel, eczema, etc.
Watch your almond milk consumption — it will mess with your thyroid. My Doctor nixed the almond milk switch.
you guys are pricks
ooh! what a well-articulated comment
Your mother is a prick. She told me last night.
Did you know that athletes often drink chocolate milk after intense workouts? This is because milk replenishes the body and the chocolate gives them a small pick me up. This article clearly does only looks at one side of the conversation. As previousely stated things are good in moderation. You should not completely cut milk out of your diet unless specified by your physician.
this is used for the insulin spike which is supposed to help promote muscle growth. Milk definitely isnt the best source of calcium. Your diet should depend on how active you are i.e. if you run a lot then grain is fine
You actually believe your Doctor, WOW, that’s like believing in the Easter bunny. We are the only mammals who drink milk after weening. Does that tell you something. You’re why my insurance rates are so high. Doctors don’t know anymore than you would after a little research. But Americans are too lazy to do that. They would rather watch reality tv and eat shitty food. And occasionally end up in the E.R. (the excitement for the day)
… We’re also the only mammals that do research, or build houses, or cook our food. Does that mean all those things are inherently bad and we should go back to living in the forests like monkeys?
dont forget other mammals eat crap sooo……..
Its such as you learn my thoughts! You seem to grasp so much about this, like you wrote the ebook in it or something. I feel that you can do with some percent to power the message house a little bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog. An excellent read. I will certainly be back.
I replaced cow’s milk with soy milk in my diet years ago. I just read your comments about both soy milk and almond milk. The reason I have chosen soy over almond is that I have been able to find some with no sugar added (at TJs), But every almond milk container that I have checked lists added sugar. Do you know where I can buy almond milk without added sugar?
Thank you.
The almonds in you’re T.J.’s almond milk have pesticides. You’re getting there, soooo close. Good for you for making the switch. Whole food has organic almond milk (unsweetened)
I have a question. Would Horchata be considered cow’s milk or rice milk. I love it and im gonna QQ if I cant drink it anymore
How about some cream of sum yung guy, your mom told me last night that she loved mine. you seem like the type that would like it to. Besides it would give you something to do with your mouth other that wasting perfectly good air…….
I’ve had more joint problems that Doctors had absolutly no clues what was causing my problems but they still felt they needed to do something.
What their answer NSAID or advil.
I started having problems about a year out of High School. I use to drink atleast a litre a day but after High School I started drinking about 3 litres a day. I don’t drink pop, coffee or tea.
My life changed and now after about 20 years I can do things again. I cut way back in my milk a few years ago and I noticed a huge difference and also cut out a lot of nuts because most are 20 to 30 times more Omega 6 than Omega 3.
GOt to run but I wish the internet was around 30 years ago.
My stuff you can search is amazing.
Thank You for your article because it backs up my theory about milk.
Grant
You are right on target about milk. Why is it that people are so firmly fixed on misinformation?
But you recommend soy milk. I am surprised. There is enough evidence that consumption of soy, other than fermented soy products, is not good for the body. The processing of soy to make it edible and digestable uses methods no one should apply to any food we eat.
I’ll join you in avoiding milk but not in using soy.
It’s all very simple, really…..cows are herbivores (they eat ONLY plants) and they do not drink their own, or any other animal/human milk. So….WHERE do they get THEIR calcium from??? And why is animal calcium so important to humans? If we were meant to drink milk after the age of three, we would instinctively still be suckling on our mother’s teats. How ridiculous; but it’s not ridiculous to suckle on a cow’s teat, metaphorically speaking? I am a middle-aged vegan and have never broken a bone. My teeth are in great shape; my doctor just told me a few weeks ago that I have the vitals of a young teenager. I am not overweight, nor am I skinny; I am lean and physically fit (I do not work out). I haven’t had milk or ANY dairy product in 20 years. Good genes? Perhaps, but I have a good friend who drinks milk and eats cheese ALL the time; she is only 49 and has advanced osteoporosis so severe that she literally has holes in her bones!
Another point that can’t be argued with is that America leads the world in dairy consumption. Simultaneously we have the highest rate of osteoporosis. How do you explain that one away? Consider the following excerpt from a Cornell study:
“If dairy products are consumed in a diet high in animal protein, any potential benefit for increased bone density would be undermined. That’s because animal protein, including that from dairy products, may leach more calcium from the bones than is ingested, said Campbell, professor of nutritional biochemistry at Cornell and director of the Cornell-China-Oxford Project, the most comprehensive project on diet and disease ever conducted”.
Although almonds are low alkaline I read almond milk is acidic. Do you agree??
Linda
Almond milk is alkaline-forming. Ingesting more alkaline foods helps shift your body’s pH and oxygenates your system. Alkaline foods keep your body healthy and functioning correctly, preventing and combating cancer.
My 8 year old daughter suffered from ADD. I had a food sensitivity panel run on her as part of a program for ADD, and it came back with a moderate sensitivity to cows milk, and minor in mustard seed. 90% of children attending the program that my daughter went through (no more ADD, and never an ounce of medication, by the way) came back with a sensitivity to milk. She can’t have large concentrations of cow milk, I substitute with almond and coconut. If she has too much, her concentration goes out the window and within 3 hours she is overly emotional, argumentitive, and not well behaved. She is normally a complete angel. My son? Horrible eczema on his legs. Horrible. Pulled milk and voila! Gone! If he has cheese or milk, within 2 days, it’s back. He tolerates low amounts OK, but not straight milk or cheese. Our bodies were not built to drink from a cow. It’s not what mother nature intended us to do.
When a bunch of vegetarians and vegans rule the Olympics or even are represented substantially in any sport where physical strength is paramount then people will listen. But making subjective claims in order to prove theories is babbling. All the rhetoric and pontificating are useless unless you prove it. Driving in your car, having everything prepared for you, working in an office, drinking gallons of coffee(which is worse for your bones than anything) and pounding on a keyboard hardly makes anyone expert in what is required to fuel and maintain a physical body. In other words you’re a bunch of sedentary arm-chair experts who basically excel at the remote and texting events of life. Bottom line show us a bunch of athletic powerful 60 year olds and maybe someone might listen. For that matter what have any of you vegans who hate everything and everybody accomplished in life anyway? Exactly…..
Carl Lewis was a vegan he won 9 Gold Medals… for running and he did other track events as well. He was one of the best athletes of his time. Just saying and on a side note I’m no vegan (in fact I eat a lot meat…), but no milk worked well for him and other athletes.
Also Serena Williams has been Vegan all year to support her sister who had to switch to a raw vegan diet for health reasons… And since becoming vegan she won her first individual Gold Medal. I’d say she’s accomplished a lot in life. Again still not a vegan or against meat, but I’m also not against vegans… just against ignorance.
Milk maybe doesn’t have good effects on your body, but it certainly doesn’t have “bad effects”. The article says that a study showed that people who drank milk broke more bones than those who don’t, but it forgot to say that it was about 1 percent more, that is way under the error margin, how convenient to forget to give the details when it’s in the advantage of your argument… I can name at least a dozen of great athletes who drink milk. Also, that doesn’t make you live longer, some diseases you don’t get as much, but others you get more (pro-vegan stories always fail to mention that). Oh well, only thing I can recommand, is don’t take any advices from these type of one-minded articles.
I’ve drunk milk my whole life thinking I was helping my bones. I ate string cheese, cottage cheese and all sorts of dairy products. To make matters worse I put Ovaltine in my milk thinking of all the vitamins and minerals I was getting, not thinking about the added sugar. I hope now at age 65 I can reverse the negative effects of a lifetime of milk drinking with an alkaline diet!
You go!! good for you
Milk is not “a cultural phenomenon that can be traced back thousands of years ago” (incidentally, check your grammar. The word ‘ago’ is unecessary in this sentence). According to the documentary on the Netherlands that I watched last night, milk was, at least in the Netherlands, considered ‘unfit for human consumption’ before the invention of pasteurisation. It was after this invention that it became regarded as a health drink.
check your spelling, it’s “unnecessary”, not unecessary
I have dyspepsia which, at times, is very painful. I found that milk with cereals slightly upset my stomach. Because of this, it is now made with water with aq pinch of alt.
Look y’all, why the conversation? Milk and dairy products are very healthy, if not over consumed. Someone mentioned that milk doesn’t cure cancer. Many people are living well today without cancer, because they are on healthy diet drinking milk.
