A randomized controlled trial in older obese adults divided participants into a diet-only group and a diet-and-exercise group. Participants in the diet-only group lost 6.2% of their thigh muscle volume, whereas those in the diet-and-exercise group increased their thigh muscle volume by 2.7%.1 These changes in muscle volume were strongly correlated with changes in hip bone mineral density.
